DOOM 3 Hardware Requirements

The Phobos Lab has a post up with John Carmack's response to their question about the minimum system requirements to run id Software's upcoming DOOM 3 (thanks Tiscali Games). Here's the deal:
1GHz CPU
256MB RAM
GF1 or Radeon 7xxx series card

TBH i think its an 100% honest answer, more honest than would be assumed. I think Carmack is saying the technology required for doom3 is on this hardware, but making absolutely no consideration of speed requirements for a "playable" (usually 30+, 60+, 85+ or 125+ fps depending on personal view) game.

Ask what the minimum requirements are, be told the absolute minimum of what is abolutely required.

I wouldnt want to play RTCW on a 1ghz with GF1.

The tools will be built into the game as I understand it. Mods are expected of course. I gather the main reason for the 4 player mp "limit" is the size of the maps included and that mp will be "scalable" to use Carmack's term. Should be fun to see what comes out with this engine.

I think its great that the requirements are so low. Now it means that everyone can enjoy DOOM 3.

reading between the lines i can tell doom3 doesnt meet carmacks expectations, hence the low system requirments. Hes seen the bad reviews of Unreal battleships 5002 or whatever its called and now he's scared, like a big chicken!

I read that the MP maps that will be released with the game will be 4 player max, but modders can raise that number easily. Let's hope so.

Carmack said last year there would "almost certainly" be a linux binary for the game, although it would only work with nvidia cards at first.

Speaking of, he also (previously) specifically said not to buy a GF4Mx to play the game with, and now he is saying you can use a GF1? WTF?

If you disable all the special effects and run at 640x480, I doubt the game would be unplayable with these specs. Of course, without the shadows, it's hard to say what the game experience will be like compared to their intent.

phew....I wasnt totally wrong then....but DM with max 4 players wont be much fun for long...especially not in those cramped spaces. Too bad about no coop....

Sorry, but where ever you got your info was wrong. I think it was Todd that updated his plan, maybe Graeme that clearly stated that MP was included, and the DM would "be taken to the next level with dynamic lighting". Now as far as it being taken to the next level, truely doubt that. But DM is planned, just on a limited scale. As far as COOP is concerned, your correct. Coop was never intended as an option and was never though twice about. I suggest someone try finding the .plan, or maybe it was an interview at a site.

MP for D3 has been canceled a few months ago. Also don't bet on Coop, in fact forget it. D3's gameplay has not been designed with Coop in mind, it won't work.

Link please? Last I heard it was still in.

The newer and bigger your machine the better Doom will look and play.
There must have come a point when the level sizes were fairly determined and the engine was in place.
At that point the specs outlined above would probably have been ok.
I ran the leaked and un-optimised E3 demo comfortably on a 1GHz P4 with a GeForce 3 and 256 Mb RAM.

There is supposed to be mp but only for like 2-4 players max. Coop will be there I think (HOPE!!11!)
