DOOM 3 Hardware Requirements

The Phobos Lab has a post up with John Carmack's response to their question about the minimum system requirements to run id Software's upcoming DOOM 3 (thanks Tiscali Games). Here's the deal:
1GHz CPU
256MB RAM
GF1 or Radeon 7xxx series card

a little shocked to hear a GF1 could do...lol

Do they even sell those relics? Over here for a couple of years now it's been either a TNT2 or a GF2 MX for the low end.

Anyway, for those with high-end machines I'm hoping that D3 will redefine the term scalable in terms of graphical detail. Most cards today can easily handle large textures of microscopic detail thanks to compression and fillrate hasn't really been much of an issue until very recently with the advent of games that use a ton of texture passes. The polycounts for most games are also usually also set around a predefined level, so beyond a certain point the only thing a faster CPU will get you is a better framerate.

Will the new DOOM engine with it's fancy tech break the mold and actually look proportionally better on faster systems?

Alls I can say is I spent $774.89 (CDN) on an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB
Ok, $775 Candian translates to $555 American. The 9800 Pro 256 MB when it first came out, retail was less expensive then that? Where did you order it from? Mars, and pay a huge amount of shipping?

I can't believe you spent that much on a video card. If you have more cash to blow could you throw some this way to help me pay for my tuition in the fall?

Last I had heard, they were debating about whether they would let the players turn off the real-time shadows, since so much of the engine (and probably atmosphere of the game) was devoted to the shadow effects. I guess these low system requirements mean that they decided to let the players turn off real-time shadows.

Alls I can say is I spent $774.89 (CDN) on an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB and Im still waiting to be impressed. The only difference between the low, mid, and high end platforms of video cards (that I've noticed) is how much frames per second they put out. The Image Quality is more or less the same. Some people can handle 5-10FPS (1GHz GF1) other people like to have in the 3 digit margin (3GHz 9800). I could care less as long as when I click my mouse to shoot, the gun responds in the same second. Great move carmack did though, now more people will buy the game and he can fill the pool in his backyard with $100 bills instead of $50's.

Here you go: http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030512/geforce_fx_5900-10.html#doom_iii_special_preview

I would take those benches with a grain of salt though, the event was sponsored by Nvidia.

All I want is a post from Johny Boy saying which video cards, in the difference price ranges will play Doom3 the best.
Low-end Nvidia or ATi?
Mid-end Nvidia or ATi?
HighMid/lowerHighend Nvidia or ATi?
High-end I don't give a rats ass, as I aint got that kinda money.
thats all I want

How can you say carmack is disappointed with the game just cuz the minimum specs say GF1?! Geeezzz all minimum requirements means is that if you turn all the effects off, put it at the lowest res with the lowest texture res you can play it fine on these specs. If anyone wants the detail you see on those latest released screenies then you'll need some real beef to run this baby well.

Case closed.

I wouldnt want to play RTCW on a 1ghz with GF1.

I played RtCW with a 500mhz/Geforce2 system it ran alright. It didn't look great but ran fine.

These sys reqs seem pretty low but I bet the game is still playable.

I could care less about the mininum specs now that my business is a system/ hardware supplier.

I have only one issue/ question... "WHERE THE HELL DO I GET THAT DAMN ILLEGAL COPY OF THE DOOMIII_ALPHA.RAR so I can test it out on one of my system(s)?"

I'll be the judge of min specs now that Nvidia has admitted to screwing up the NV?? FX chipset's prowess.
