TRON 2.0 Gold

Buena Vista Interactive's TRON 2.0 Goes Gold, Celebrating 21 Years of TRON (thanks Frans) is the press release announcing that Monolith's first-person shooter follow-up to the science fiction flick is complete, although the game will not be available until August 26. Here's a bit: "Developed by critically acclaimed Monolith Productions, TRON 2.0 is an action-packed story-driven game that takes place in present day, approximately 20 years after the events of the film. Playing as Jet Bradley, son of ENCOM programmer Alan Bradley from the TRON film, gamers are digitized into cyberspace and will race on light cycles, battle corruption both inside and outside of the computer world, and explore locations including the Internet Hub, Firewall, Corrupted Server and Light Cycle Game Grid."

I recall playing "cycles" on SGI platforms

Cycles! how could I forgot this one I spent hundred hours playing it on the O2 at university
Though I think I spent even more time playing 'Pointblank' the tank/planes game.. You could chosse among two different tanks, light & heavy, and a plane, and we were doing dogfights all the time it was a really cheap game but it was fun as hell.. The graphics weren't that impressive (especially for a SGi station) but the steady 60fps framerate was really nice at the time.
God, we spent much more time playing on these stations than working our Softimage and Irix skills

I remeber immersing myself into the worlds or DOOM...

Don't knock DOOM's graphics either. For it's time it was absolutely mind-blowing. The combination of texture mapped 3D environments, intricately hand drawn 2D sprites, and the moody 256 color pallete was something no one else could pull off for quite some time.

It's been a long while, but I think we're on the verge of another revolution on that scale.

Back on topic, I'd play TRON 2.0 for the visual style ALONE.

Damn, for its days, System Shock looked absolutely AWESOME in my opinion, especially after I had played through it six times already, and finally found out how to install the 640x480 graphics.

I'll wait and see on Tron, even though I'm an unashamed Tron fanboy and I like monolith's single player experiences. I just have a nasty feeling about this considering the paltry demo they released.

If monolith wants to do themselves a favor, they should release a new demo between now and 8/26, preferably with some single player levels in it.

It's fucking TRON -- I'll buy it. I have total faith that Monolith will deliver a good game. They are obviously fans of the film -- the game looks fantastic. The lightcycle gametype was great once you got the hang of it. Can't wait for this game!

Perhaps the disk arena gametype wasn't as fun as the original Disks of Tron, but cut the guys some slack. From what I've read, the focus is on singleplayer.

I might be in the minority, but I'm more excited to play this game than any other on the horizon. TRON was nearly as big a part of my childhood as Star Wars.

The old Tron Disks arcade game was ahead of its time, man that game rocked. It was way better than that 2d Tron game with light cycles and freaking spiders trying to kill you.

i think tron 2.0 lightcycles stomps on armagetron, and sure the game has been played before but it is a whole new game in first person.

The demo only showed 3 power-ups, shield, turbo, and turbo curse. I think there are around 5 more power-ups, such as missles and things that effect your path and more. So with these in the full version available, it will add more variety and action to the already fun lightcycles.

dude..of course, the games before had 2D graphics with light cycles composed of 4 pixels......and a grid......and thats it

There have been many light cycle games since the film was released. I recall playing "cycles" on SGI platforms (shipped with the original O2 boxes, I think). You could jump other people's trails and drop through holes in the floor to a new level of the map. It was networked multiplayer and a lot of fun.

More recently, there's Armagetron, which is the standard to which the TRON 2.0 light cycles game is being held up to.

"same stiff animations and ..."

I believe I read that the crappy animations on the MP demo had to do with lag (or the ATTEMPT at preventing lag). Supposedly in SP everything looks a little better.

Besides, what ever happened to imagination. Sure, killer graphics help, but imagination is what makes a game fun. I remeber immersing myself into the worlds or DOOM and System Shock. The graphics there weren't realistic, but I still managed to "feel" like I was right there running for my life.

Personally, I've been waiting for this game for a long time. Just the idea of immersing myself in the world of Tron kicks ass.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I doubt the single play will be too hot either, same stiff animations and the all too fast moving disc will be there too. The only thing that might get me to pick it up is if you can drive one of the tanks from the original Tron movie.

no joke man...

For some of the younger peeps here, the lightcycles game may be a nice bit of fun... but the older cats around have probably played this game about a zillion times by now.

As you may or may not know, the original lightcycles concept from the original Tron movie is based on a type of computer game from that time period. It is in the same league of games as Pong and Space Invaders - in fact it might even be older than that. The lightcycles were an artistic rendition of this OLD OLD computer game. I, for one, got my fill of this kind of game long ago.

Regarding the MP demo:

I've been playing far too many games of Light Cycles. I think it's graphically ahead of all those other light cycle games that have been released before, and the AI is vicious, as well. It's surpringly playable if everyone's pinging <50 and okay if pinging <100.

As for Disc Arena... well, maybe it's an acquired taste. I'm no good at it and I haven't seen a reason to practice more.

I think they should have released a SP Demo before the MP demo. Obviously the game's focus is Single Player.

And I think the August date was picked in advance to synchronize with the Disney marketing machine. There's a soundtrack to the film out now (finally) and I'm sure they'll shill for the game on the Disney Channel, etc. Better to go gold now than to release at the last minute to make a date and have a buggy product.

After releasing a demo that was loathed by the large majority of the Internet, and almost SIX WEEKS before it's due in stores, they go gold?

Somewhere in the back of my mind, there is this little voice that says this will not be very good...

Anyone with the indescribably poor taste to name their son "Jet" should be strung up by their gnarlies, vivisected, and their parts thrown into the remains of dried-up suburban swimming pool, so the crows and buzzards can feed upon the organs as they decay in the summer heat.

Jet, indeed.

*snort* Why not just name the kid "Please Kick My Ass"? It'd be more direct, and at least interesting.
