In fairness to the interactivity of Doom3, remember that in that old e3 video you saw boxes and things being knocked off shelves by gunfire. So some of that interactivity is there.

Secondly, Carmack may be an engine god but he's clueless about what gamers want. For example, he initially ruled out the rag doll physics for dead baddies because he thought it was just a gimmick. It was eventually put in because "evidently people really wanted it", which seemed to surprise him. Now, months later, the physics engines are what everyone is salivating over. Surprise, surprise.

Carmack wants photo-realistic graphics; I want a pseudo-realistic WORLD.

I think the true rivalry between the now 3 major game engines will occur once 3rd-party developers start licensing these engines for their own games.

For many years now it's been either the more traditional Quake or the cross-genre-friendly Unreal. With the Source engine's new direction towards "reactive" and "emotional" gameplay, I think we will increasingly see FPS games being described as belonging to an additional 3rd side. Counter Strike 2 (Just at the top of my head, sorry.) may have perfect ballistic engine physics and destructable environments, but it may not match Quake 4's real-time photorealistic graphics. Neither of these will have the emergent RPG storyline of Deux Ex 3.

Then again, considering the number of successful games in the recent past (Mafia) and potential future (STALKER) that have used or will use their own engines, any rivalry between the 3 could be deemed insignificant. The Source engine may also have some as of yet undisclosed RPG capability, making it compete more directly with Unreal.

I didn't say graphics don't matter. The point I was making was that you don't have to have DOOM3 graphics to have a game look fantastic (as HL2 clearly does), and from my experience gaming online, graphics are no where near as important as performance.

Now, don't get me wrong. I am one of those people who loves eye candy. I pay for the best hardware so I can play these games in all their glory. However, saying that HL2 graphics suck just cause they don't measure up to DOOM 3, seems ludicrous in my opinion. Especially considering the insane physics and interactivity of HL2.

I know as much about DOOM3 as anyone here, and I haven't seen any evidence that DOOM3's world will be as interactive as HL2's. I will also state, for the record, that I prefer the road Valve has taken. They are making the world FEEL more real as well as look more real. Id's approach seems to be making things look more realistic than anyone else's game, but not react/feel real.

We have a little while before we see what DOOM 3 can do, but I still doubt they will touch the HL2 Source engine in mod-friendliness or interactivity....only time will tell.

Wiggamoe Valve has said that the new HL2 videos are only being released through steam, but you are allowed to distribute the videos. Fileplanet does not have an exclusive and are not charging for it, they simply did what every other site did and got it off steam.

But...but...I thought graphics didn't matter. Why even mention that HL2 graphics "kick ass"? So what if they do? If graphics are such a non-issue, they can never "kick ass". They can only be a burden, right?

We need to make up our minds here or preferably come up with a way of thinking that isn't so black and white.

In my view, graphics matter for games as much as production values matter for action and sci-fi films. That is to say, it matters even if it is not the only thing that matters.

I'm tired of this bullshit partnership that fileplanet has with all these companies, where they release videos, demos, etc only to fileplanet, and you have to pay some stpuid 10 bucks a month to get files that you could otherwise get on other places on the net. Thats retarted, everyone, download Kazaa Lite if you don't already have it, and download the entire Half Life 2 movie, it is readily available on Kazaa. Its amazing, and is about 15 minutes long, showing so much more than what Vavle is slowly releasing to the public. FU FILEPLANET!

Yeah, I think some of you are on crack. The game looks better than any recent build of Unreal I have seen, and it has physics and interactivity that no other game can touch. Frankly, I could care less about DOOM3 graphics. Graphics like that are exciting for about 15 minutes until you start playing the game, then you are wishing the world wasn't so cardboard. That is what HL2 is bringing us. Their graphics do kick ass, even if they aren't DOOM3 graphics. I guess if they were going to make a maze of space hallways like DOOM3, they could have squeazed out more too.

If DOOM3's interactivity even comes close to that of HL2, I will be surprised.

Who would have thought the mighty Doom 3 would be eclipsed in the minds of gamers. It's sweet justice. Id treated Valve very poorly. Sold 'em their engine then forgot about them. They arrogantly thought Half Life would be a huge flop and simply wrote them off as a bunch of losers. I wouldn't be surprised if Valve timed all this to coincide with the release the Doom 3. Yeah, sweet.

Do you have any evidence to back that up or are you just a Valve fanboy that hates iD? I have heard absolutely nothing that leads me to believe that iD "treated Valve very poorly".

I never heard of Id treating Valve badly iether. I think you made that one up there. And for me, I anticipate both titles equally. Of coarse, I won't get ether till I have my rig in top of the line condition.

Apparently so, according to a piece of information I saw in the "official post your valve answers here" thread on one or other Half-Life 2 forum. I'll look up the details once I get home, if no-one beats me to it.

Ratty,

Where did you learn that id Software treated Valve "badly"?

Good point about the trustworthiness of running a Bink executable.

I don't like Bink cause it's an executable. You have no way of knowing what it is without clicking it. I would never run one unless it came from an absolutely trusted site.

I'd recommend downloading the RAD Game Tools from the Bink/Smacker creators and use that to play such potentionally unsafe Bink files.

Engine looks unbelievable. I'm still curious how the mini-loads will work. They really weren't too obtrusive in Half Life but of course I'd prefer they weren't there at all.

Ah, good to see legitimate files being shared with BitTorrent.

Right now, the illegal BitTorrent sites are being shut down all over the place. ByteMonsoon and Torrentse.cx are gone - they were used purely to distribute illegal contents.
