I actually liked the way Fallout Tactics was designed. You could select turn-based or real-time (w/pause) via the game prefs panel. Although, I wasn't too crazy about the game itself. Point is, having both is a nice implementation.
I'd also say that it depends on the _type_ of crpg (e.g. Gothic would suck with turn-based).
