Did you guys play "Wasteland"?? It was the first RPG by that Fallout guy, made in the 80s... It fuckin rocked so hard... so open ended... Id probably still be willing to play that these days, even though the graphics were 16 color EGA, and didnt animate.

edit: Hell, I'd buy Fallout 3 even if it used the same graphics engine as the first two

Same here man. Fallout 3 will be using a 3D isometric engine this time around so it will be interesting to see how that pans out. Damn, I've wanted that game for so long it's nice to actually have a light at the end of the tunnel now.

Forget Lionheart, forget Temple of Elemental Evil, forget Neverwinter Nights, what everyone REALLY wants is Fallout 3

As much as I love NWN (particularly the work the mod community has done ... amazing stuff) I do agree that the first OC left a little to be desired.

I'm also inclined to agree that combat in the single player game does have something of a "charge-and-cross-your-fingers-hoping-for-a-critical" element.

However my pen 'n paper gaming friends and I recently played a module in multiplayer and I have to say that it was a great experience. Not the same as tabletop gaming, of course, but very good for other reasons.

And plenty of strategy ... though we did find ourselves yelling at the half-orc a lot.

Hmmm ... maybe it's not that different to tabletop gaming after all.

Man, how could you not like Mafia? That game was... amazing. I can't believe that it wasn't the biggest game of all time given how well it was done.

Yeah but NWN got glowing reviews despite it's mediocrity and Mafia got completely snubbed from most GotY awards despite it being the best action game to come out in 2002.
Tastes differ, bear with it. I'd agree with those reviews, I had a blast playing through NWN with a friend, and I hated Mafia. A friend never even tried NWN and digs Mafia, that's okay, too.

As for Greyhawk, unlike Lionheart, I have kept quite a close look at this for a month or so when I saw it mentioned on Blue's. I think it looks just awesome. I'm not very definitive on the real-time/turn-based issue, but seeing how there hasn't been a decent turn-based RPG in a LONG time, what with the Infinity Engine games and NWN all being pausable real-time, I'm really looking forward to stretching my turn-based strategy muscles. Also, I just love AD&D CRPGs (never played P&P tho) and am looking forward to their implementation.

In Baldur's Gate and in Fallout I always felt like my skill as a player had more to do with my success than my characters to-hit roll. By being a good tactician you could win combat encounters that were designed for higher level characters. In the case of NWNs it frequently comes down to you yelling at your character to get a critical, no involvement on your part just hoping the luck of the dice is on your side. It shouldn't be that way, I should be able to do something that influences combat.

Man, that is so perfect. My thoughts exactly.

Jefferson project aka Fallout 3

You mean Van Buren. Jefferson was Baldur's Gate 3 but is now on indefinate hold due to licensing issues. I know this because I spend way too much time on the Black Isle Forums.

I actually finished SoU today. I thought it was a vast improvement over the NWN OC but still left much to be desired. Ch1 was excellent despite the limitations of the Aurora engine but the interlude and Ch2 were standard hack and slash bore-a-thons. NWN just doesn't do combat very well. If combat absolutely has to be designed that way then it is very important that the game doesn't revolve around combat. That was the fatal flaw of the OC and the later chapters of SoU. I'm ranting about NWN again but I just can't express how dissappointed I was with the game.

Well... I agree that NWN isn't all that it could've been; Shadows of the undretide is much better tough, BUT, I certainly hope that they do a good job with the Hordes of the Underdark.

As far as other CRPGs go, there's the Jefferson project aka Fallout 3 that oughtta be good and Call of Cthulhu (is CRPG right?)
anyway,
cheers

this game has me mildly interested, but I've read that it's 2D and locked at 800x600, meh. Besides, I'm getting very sick of RPG's with "magic", I want some friggin futuristic sci-fi RPG's dammit! A RPG something like "Syndicate Wars" would be a dream...

Ah, cool news. Didn't realise this was gonna be out so soon. Love BG style games. Bit of plotting, bit of intrigue... the joy I get when my character backstabs someone so hard that they explode. Always good. Hope this game is nice and gory.

Neither turn based or solid real time do it for me. What worked perfectly for me was the Baldur's Gate way of turn based real time where you paused it at any given moment to issue commands.

I could be wrong, but I've been following this game for some time, and have been led to believe that combat will be just like BG's, which to me is a good thing.

I've been looking forward to this game for quite a while now, and will probably buy it on principle when it comes out, before reading reviews, etc, since I've been jonesing for a good crpg ever since BG2.

The three I'm most looking forward to before the end of the year are this one, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Knights of the Old Republic. God I hope they're good, and don't have anything in common with NWN.

I'll be getting it for sure. I've been jonsing for a good RPG for a long while now, seeing as Gothic 2 is taking forever to get here.

But of course.. and actually I am looking forward to this new breed of FPS RPGs like Xenus and STALKER, hopefully they can generate some interest for that market.

Gonna pick up KOTOR tommorow... after being thoroughly and utterly dissapointed with "Pirates of Carribean", I really need to justify my Xbox over here. I just want a good console RPG, is that too much to ask? 'Xbox devs': YES, WE WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE SPORTS GAMES.

I actually liked the way Fallout Tactics was designed. You could select turn-based or real-time (w/pause) via the game prefs panel. Although, I wasn't too crazy about the game itself. Point is, having both is a nice implementation.

I'd also say that it depends on the _type_ of crpg (e.g. Gothic would suck with turn-based).

Bioware's RPG KOTOR X-Box version is getting good reviews:

I suspect it will be a strong contender for PC RPG of the year on the various lists.
