Vietcong Patch

Because the Take-Two webmaster is AWOL (or maybe he just has a three day pass), the Vietcong Czech Fansite is the home base for a new version 1.3 patch for the Vietnam War shooter. Word is: "This patch fixes the most of bugs and game crashes known from 1.20 version. Unfortunately some new game features requested by players (i.e. Anti-Kangaroo option) are not included in (perhaps in some next patch :-)." A complete list of what's new and changed can be found here. The 33 MB update has been mirrored on 3D Gamers and Tiscali Games.

Yeah, we saw all that footage during the recent invasion of Iraq, the first Gulf War, Vietnam, and WWII of soldiers HOPPING around the battlefield going "uh, uh, uh, uh".
Any game whose MP relies on getting your mouse cursor on a specific pixel faster than the other guy is a loser game. That's not talent, it's just reflexes. I don't play a WWII game to test my reflexes, I can go down to the shooting range for that.
I play them to recreate the experiences of combat in their relative environments. There are some nods to playability, of course, like health packs and armor in some instances, but as soon as I see people bouncing like they've got Flubber on their feet, I'm outta there.
Oh, and SOME of us work 45+ hours a week and have a family and several games, so we don't have the LUXURY to sit around playing ONE game for several hours a nite so we won't "suck". We have LIVES.

Vietcong is probably the best FPS since Medal of Honour but it doesn't get due recognition. The firefights have rightly got mentioned here but I think a lot of people miss how great the AI is, most of the time anyway - your teamates aren't the sharpest, the enemies can get a bit thick when they're close in and they're way too accurate at long range but their approach AI and medium range combat, which most of the fighting is, is superb. Hell, they actually move so in co-op you can't go stright to where you were killed to frag the VC.

Top game, and one that's getting patched well.

Cheers,
Quboid

I got that feeling watching my friend play through it. Any time he got into a fight there was lots of hiding, leaning out or looking out for a moment, taking half a dozen shots, then hiding again.

And yes, the fights did last a lot longer than your usual fare. It's nice when enemies hide. Saves you just headshotting them all *bam, bam, bam* in the first moment you see them.

It is one of the first FPS where you get prolonged shootouts instead of mindlessly wading through enemies as uber-soldier.

You hit the nail right in the head there MrShoop. This is ultimately what VietCong's gameplay is all about and should be it's major (And probably only) contribution to the FPS genre. VietCong has innovated by providing the kind of realism that complements action instead of detracting from it, the latter having been the common philosophy since the proliferation of Tactical FPS games (Realism versus Fun.)

To use a more familiar analogy which I've stated before, you really feel like an action hero in a Vietnam war movie. Firefights with your squad usually involve everyone taking potshots at each other from behind cover for what seems like minutes until eventually the good guys win.

The game is meant to be realistic. Kangaroo or whatever (bunny hopping I assume they mean) isn't all that realistic.

There is little to no AI in quake, that may be one reason the twitch crowd doesn't like Vietcong. That and the beautiful outdoor environment, something no Quake game has ever got a handle on - even doom3 engine is made for small, indoor maps.

i agree - i think this is one of the most underrated FPS out there. Great atmosphere, and you actually have to think to get kills. Covering fire, taking cover, even some AIMING. It is one of the first FPS where you get prolonged shootouts instead of mindlessly wading through enemies as uber-soldier. Pacing closer to Thief than Quake I understand why it alienates some Quakers, but it at least differentiates itself.

I didn't think it was an outstanding game but it didn't suck. One thing it excelled at was the atmosphere. Play it on a large screen monitor with the lights off and some good headphones and it feels like you're right there in the jungle.

I haven't played the full version but I enjoyed the demo quite a bit. I could have done with out the cheesy dialogue and low production values but gameplay was awesome. I especially liked how you could get fire and maneuver going with your squad, have them attack into an ambush while you swing around to the flank, etc. The demo was just chock full of really fun and for the most part realistic combat. Maybe the full game wasn't nearly as good but I enjoyed the demo very much.
