Halo PC Preview

There's a Halo Preview on PC.IGN.Com with first-hand impressions of Gearbox Software's upcoming PC port of Bungie's shooter. They discuss the similarities to the Xbox version, tweaks to make gameplay on the PC more workable, and what will be different, like the following bit on the weapons in the PC version:
There are even some new weapons here. Unfortunately since the Bungie and Gearbox guys had played the maps before they tended to snap up all the cool toys right away. Nevertheless we still managed to grab hold of the Fuel Rod Rifle and give that a try. This new weapon, used by the big squat Hunter dudes in Halo, has been made available in multiplayer. It fires a huge green energy blob that's the rough equivalent of the Marine rocket launcher. Very nice.

Quote Randy Pitchford: "It turned out to be a really, insanely difficult problem to do this over a network (as opposed to doing something like split screen) which is why it's next to impossible to find a first-person action game that offers it on the PC."

Erm... try talking to Irrational Games and ask 'em how they managed to create a really good 4 player co-op on System Shock 2 (and under exetreme technical and financial difficulties as far as can be told from the stories that leaked out at the time).

I'm sure there's other examples of really good co-op games out there if only I could be bothered to think about it...

Sounds like a bit of a lame excuse to be honest!

WHy not do all 3?
I'm buying Halo PC, but mostly just for the MP aspect. I loved Halo, but never got to play it much since I only got to borrow a friend's XBox for a few days.

I already have Halo PC AND HL-2 preordered from ebgames.com. I figure I'll have a week to play Halo on the internet, and then HL-2 will take over.

You are missing a MAJOR point. TF2 was announced ages ago and is in the same category as Duke Nukem.

HL2 was announced when it was ALMOST DONE. They started working on it right after they released HL1, but they made sure all of the developers kept quiet about. Then, they announced that they had been working on it and that it's nearing completing a few months ago.

The Duke Nukem/Prey/TF2 PR fiascos have nothing to do with HL2.

Yes, I am surprised there isn't more talk about this (or there is, but I haven't seen it?). They won't talk about multiplayer in HL2, yet drop subtle hints about TF2.

Let's see... What is "Halo" for Joe Average Gamer anyway? I doubt Joe Average Gamer has even heard of it, and if he has, he has forgotten it long ago on the PC.

Then look at releases like Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex 2 - games with firmly established brand names in the PC gaming world.

You see what Halo is up against?

You can't steal games by downloading them. Copying is not stealing. It may be copyright infringement, but it is not stealing, no matter how you twist it.

There have been a few comments that hint TF2 may be included with HL2.

So, I assume that Halo was just T2 just hashed out for the Xbox then. Again I ask, whats the point in getting Halo released for the PC now?

Heh, ethic. I got my entire system for free and then spent 35 dollars on Halo. I got Halo cheaper than you WITH an XBox.

I don't have an Xbox, so I'll buy this port. You know, if I had spent $350 to play Halo back in '01 (come on, admit it: your entire Xbox purchase was based on Halo -- it had to have been; there's no other reason to own an Xbox. Everything good eventually gets ported, anyway), I'd probably be a little bitter, too. I mean, it must be incredibly frustrating to see other people get a superior version of a game for $40, at the same time remembering that it took you months of mowing lawns and running lemonade stands to save up enough money to get Halo: Xbox.

Yay! Superior Halo for me!

Doesn't it just look like Gearbox stuck a cut-down team of a few programmers and 1 or two artist/level designers on this one?

Halo PC can be summarised in one word - Afterthought.

Sad to know seeing as what it started off as.

So while the programmers were sitting around porting the code (fair deal). The artists were sitting around... what were the artists doing? the level designers were sitting around making 4 (count em) maps. Meanwhile the sound engineers were leaving the sounds exactly the same while writing a sound engine that can support 5.1 on modern sound systems? (aka building in EAX and a few other driver support things?)

I thought fanboys meant they were "fans" of the game, meaning, they liked it... lol

Go ahead and waste your money on Halo PC, no one is going to stop you. Personally, I'll save my hard earned cash for the real games coming out this year, like HL2 and UT2k4.

It brightens my day to come on here and read a bunch of fanboys bash Halo for PC as if it's going to make a difference. You guys seem to think you're Joe Average Gamer when in reality you (we) are far different from the norm. The majority of PC gamers and gamers in general don't investigate the story behind the games. They walk into Best Buy, look at the shelf, and buy what stands out. Not only that, but many of these gamers have seen or played Halo on an XBox so they know if they like it.

This title will be a success. It might not be a huge success, and it more than likely won't be anything major. And of course you all, being fanboys, will tout this as Bungie getting some sort of comeuppance because they "screwed you". News flash fanboys: Bungie wouldn't exist in it's current form today without MS and the XBox only release.

So while you may sit there and say "FUCK BUNGIE" or something similar, keep in mind what makes the gaming world go around, and also that designers usually don't design games for you. If they did, would there be Sims? Would there be 300 Tycoon games? No. Because you aren't a target audience for anyone except a minority of game companies.
