Assumedly the same thing that prevents people from taking one Half-Life CD and playing online with more than one computer... A unique key to activate it, which wouldn't just be tied into the CD you bought, but Steam account you have and the card you used to pay for the game. That makes for some worrying legal consequences for anyone who wants to use this method for piracy I would think.

I heard its gonna be in bink format (as the source engine allows you to export your demos as bink exes apparently)

I imagine that it'll be just like leasing an engine. Though if you lease VSource, maybe they toss it in for free? Hmm.

1024*, 25 minutes, that'd be nearly 1.5GB unless they reduced the quality a lot with some crazy DivX compression. I can barely run the 600MB, 25 minute Apple MOV file as it is on this PC (900MHZ AMD, GF3 64MB DDR, 512MB PC133 RAM).

Hopefully it's coming out soon, the new Queensryche album will be taking up a lot of my time... well, that is, unless it sucks. *crosses fingers*

Anyone know if developers who want to use the steam service to distribute their games have to pay Valve $$$?

Not that I would mind giving Valve more money...

Just curious:
If some of you are right and you will be able to burn it to a CD, then how are they going to keep someone from getting it and just passing it around to everybody they know or selling it for half the price of downloading it?

They send the big black dude in this gif: http://valvesoftware.com/images/head_anim.gif by your house to break your knuckles if you burn more than one.

HL1 was kinda before the big copy-write protection push that has come about lately, so I don't relate it HF2 so much.
And there is more to playing than online/multiplayer. I actually like the single player experience.
Also, will there be the ability to set up a LAN to play with friends or is the only way thru Steam?

whats to stop them doing that with hl1?

they won't be able to play online (because the key/steam account will be in use)

I think they're gonna test it first with cs:cz, then that should give them an idea of the bandwidth needed for hl2. (although i doubt anyones gonna wanna pay for cscz).

I also doubt that they will 'only' have the 1150.00Mbps that they have right now.

yesterday they only had 500Mbps i think, so they've doubled it for the release of steam to the public - and afaik that's gone smoothly (this time).

ut you divide that by 100,000 people trying to grab HL2 which will be several gigs, all at once, and you have a major crawl.

Yeah. The CS 1.6 that crashed the system a few months ago, will seem like peanuts to the HL2 release. In the next 80 days, the release will probably be hyped in every paper and net based gaming mag out there. And because it (hopefully) also marks a completely new way to distribute major games it might even be in places like CNN, and other mass media too.

I think the number of people will be beyond 100,000. on the other hand though , I still want a good ol' box for my HL2.

I think we're all looking forward to the official hl2 trailers.

according to some nob they're 1024*768 and 800mb all together (for the full 25 mins)

That spells quality in any language.

They're hoping to be able to rent out movies over steam eventually so this could be a pretty big test for them.

All you'll need to do is backup your cache.

Open your favorite CD burning application > Choose to burn E:\Install\Games\Steam\SteamCache\wedgymstr@earthlink.net

That's it, easy as pie. Of coulse that'd backup everything, including any supported Mods. If you just wanted Half-Life 2 then you'd burn \email\hl2\, or whatever it'll be.

In any case, I'm a sentimental person, I'll always buy the box.

I'm not exactly itching with anticipation (ok maybe a bit) - I can wait. It's just odd that its all over the place as "download Steam now and watch the trailer!" Kind of misleading, you know?

How exactly do you download the HL2 trailer (hoping its higher quality than the steady-cam ones I've seen) from Steam? I haven't a clue.

I've heard something about CD burn'n that lets you back up tons of stuff. This could actually solve your problem.

I would rather have a CD or DVD than only a program installed on my computer... So if I reformat my hard drive I will have to download it again? Not everyone has unlimited downloading either.
