Out of the Blue

Sigh. I went against the old adage about not fixing something that was not broken yesterday, and tried to uninstall one of the multiple versions of Java installed on my computer and, naturally enough, broke something really badly. Now the odd behavior I am not able to shake is a memory leak with FrontPage (which I have used for years as an easy HTML editor). It's a little spooky... even saving a blank page immediately triggers the leak, which continues straight on until the system crashes. Sorry about the late update and over-aged news. This has been a real nightmare, I've transferred everything to a different machine now, and I'm really beginning to suspect my aging hardware may just need to be put out to pasture at this point (hey, this may be turn into a sponsorship opportunity for some hardware type!).

Your ONLY site to purchase computer hardware should be http://www.newegg.com end of discussion. Check their feedback on http://www.resellerratings.com if you dont believe me.

A bit off topic from everything else, but I just went to go see it, and I think it's very good. It's not as crap as the trailers would have you believe.

And it definitely has one of the more surprising, cool endings of the last decade.

I think no fan of the Terminator series will be disappointed with this.

I live out here on the left coast, and I often buy from atacom.com. Relatively cheap (most of the time, anyway), and great service. And since they're in CA (and I'm in WA) I don't have to pay sales tax - WOOT!!!

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Are you comfortable with assembling the cpu and mom? Yup

I don't think my suggestion would be the right one for you. I'll list them here so you can check it out in case I'm wrong.

http://www.insightcomponents.com

What I like about them is their 'configurator'. It allows you to pick a processor, then it presents you with a list of motherboards they sell that are compatible with that processor. Works both ways.

I think their pricing is good, but not THE BEST. The shipping on the previous orders I've placed seemed almost too low. Items I've ordered from them have arrived before they listed as shipping on their site.

I had an issue with a case that was shipped with the incorrect ps and they shipped me a replacement fedex at no cost to me, I even got to keep the incorrect ps!

The best part of their site is not as good as it used to be. If you choose to 'integrate' your order they will assemble and test your cpu, motherboard and memory. This gets you a 60 day full replacement warranty (used to be a full two YEARS). So I don't know if the integration is as good a deal as it used to be.

Good luck.

But I get all my stuff from www.newegg.com - good prices, great service, I've never had a problem with any of my orders.

I'll second that recommendation. I've ordered stuff from them twice now (quite a lot of stuff, I might add) and haven't experienced any problems. My current system is 95% components from newegg, I believe

*edit* ohh and Truth, i ahve bought stuff from www.bzboyz.com many times, very cheap, and when I got a dud CPU they replaced it right away, no questions. They also replaced a friends motherboard for FREE when he damaged it installing the cpu! And they knew he did, they sent detailed instructions on how to do it right next time

This is definately financially motivated.

Think about it- reduce package size by 20%, charge the same amount- cha-CHING!

Oh, and the added bonus? The added PR they'll get by telling the public that they're doing it to fight obesity.

I'll answer your questions with a couple of answers:

Are you comfortable with assembling the cpu and mom? Yup

Do you want the cpu and mom to be tested together? would help i guess, although as long as they are compatible then it would be ok (nothing worse than buying the wrong board for right chip make, but the wrong chip,..

Do you want a warranty that the cpu and mom work? well as everything should come with a 1 year warrenty and im not going to overclock it then i should be ok, although obviously want everything to work,..

For buying stuff online... you can go to www.pricewatch.com and check the best prices for whatever you want. But I get all my stuff from www.newegg.com - good prices, great service, I've never had a problem with any of my orders.

As for the national DNC list - yeah, sounds like a collosal waste of taxpayer money. We changed our phone number recently, and to our surprise started getting the local paper tossed on our porch for free. Then after a month of that, we got a call from them asking if we'd enjoyed our free paper, and wondering if we'd like to start a subscription. I wonder if the free paper would qualify as an "existing business relationship"?

Memory Leak... Jul 2, 2003, 14:29
Jul 2, 2003, 14:29

Had the same problem. I had upgraded a working Win98 system to XP Pro and all was well. Everything Win95 on up worked as it had before - Office 97 Pro ran great. Then, I had a problem with a Micrsoft update that was a result of the update engine at their end (we are so sorry - but too bad for you). After it applied Win98 and WinME patches to XP Pro, things got pretty stickey.

Reformat and install XP Pro as a new installation - should work great - oops.

After installing Office 97 Pro: Excel, Powerpoint, MSPhotoEd, Frontpage, and everything else except MS Word worked as advertised. Open Word and press one key: then open the task manager and watch the memory get eaten alive.

512Mb in about 15 seconds. The cool part is that XP Pro caught the problem and shut down the offending program before it crashed the system. "Oddly" enough, MS said they had no intention of patching the problem (we are so sorry - but too bad for you)and you should purchase one of our new products that we clain no responsibility for lost time, money, cases of computer suicide, etc...

<Sigh> indeed...

hmm intresting article:

Cut marketing in schools but introduce new "healthy kids" (call it H'ids) snacks and lunches, showing the consumer u care about their kids, driving sales of new product line up.

also the McDonalds lawsuit was won by McD's and the Oreo one was dropped after the lawyer had gained enough publicity for himself.
