Out of the Blue

R.I.P.: Buddy Hackett (registration required), one of the great stand-up comics (and fellow Brooklyn native). What's odd is that the Hallmark channel started showing a week-long Love Bug marathon this week, and MrsBlue and I just watched the first one last night. Of course so close to the passing of Katherine Hepburn, we are sure to hear some of that "they go in threes" stuff, but I don't imagine that that theory stands up to much scientific examination.

Gregory Peck?

That's what I mean... what's the time frame these threes are supposed to follow? Peck died close to three weeks ago now, and his death was followed three days later by Hume Cronin's. People die all the time, including celebrities. If we reset the counter every time it reaches three no matter what span falls in between, the rule doesn't really follow much in the way of rules.

true enough. I don't believe it in that schlock anyways; just wanted to be the first to mention Atticus.

I do like that line People die all the time, including celebrities., btw. Perhaps some lesser (or foreign) celebrity/celebrities have died recently as well - or things actually come in twos.

Some Choice quotes, very very funny!

Both attorneys have obviously entered into a secret pact — complete with hats, handshakes and cryptic words — to draft their pleadings entirely in crayon on the back sides of gravy-stained paper place mats,
...
Despite the continued shortcomings of Plaintiff's supplemental submission, the Court commends Plaintiff for his vastly improved choice of crayon — Brick Red is much easier on the eyes than Goldenrod
...
Now, alas, the Court must return to grownup land.
...
Court has endeavored, primarily based upon its affection for both counsel, but also out of its own sense of morbid curiosity, to resolve what it perceived to be the legal issue presented. Despite the waste of perfectly good crayon seen in both parties' briefing (and the inexplicable odor of wet dog emanating from such)
...
In either case, the Court cautions Plaintiff's counsel not to run with a sharpened writing utensil in hand — he could put his eye out.

You can apply any signifigance to all sorts of numbers. Three is just more prevelant because it's indicative of a start, middle and ending in all things.
With 200,000+/- people dying everyday around the world it would be not to find some shared trait (apart from the actual dying itself).
People like to look for patterns in things. It's human nature. It helps make sense out of the chaos that is the Universe.

A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."

Judge Kent has been a hoot for a long, long time. My personal favorite selection from is his ruling on a change of venue request from Colonial Penn Life Insurance.

"Defendant should be assured that it is not embarking on a three-week-long trip via covered wagons when it travels to Galveston. Rather, Defendant will be pleased to discover that the highway is paved and lighted all the way to Galveston, and thanks to the efforts of this Court's predecessor, Judge Roy Bean, the trip should be free of rustlers, hooligans, or vicious varmints of unsavory kind."

And on an other note, I just got the Google 2.0 toolbar, and I'm loving the popup blocker. It has some nice features, especially for those who don't feel like taking the time out to try a new browser.

The Cowbell skit is a classic with Christopher Walken. Search for "SNL Cowbell Walken" or something similiar on Kazaa or some other P2P with videos and download it. It rocks.

This Carina sub-cloud is particularly striking partly because it's clear definition stimulates the human imagination (e.g. it could be perceived as a superhero flying through a cloud, arm up, with a saved person in tow below).

It's obviously a hand giving the finger.

They have an extra feature that you can turn off that's called PageRank. When you go to install it, they explicitly describe what it does. Basically, PageRank is what they use to rank their search results. And if you want, you can have the toolbar automatically lookup the PageRank for the page you are viewing. Obviously, doing a lookup sends them the URL you are looking up, just like doing a search sends them the search word you are using.

If you don't want it, then leave it off. You can even get a version that doesn't even have it as a part of the toolbar. It takes about 3 clicks to turn it off if you do have it on.

I don't find it too particularly useful, but I do find it interesting to look at the PageRank for the sites I usually frequent. Guess what Blue's is ranked.

While I don't think that "famous people" go in threes (and who cares anyways), have you ever noticed that airplanes ALWAYS go in threes?

I heard someone mention it sometime during the late 80s (yes I really am that old), and started paying attention to it, and it's frightening, but it's true. Once a plane crashes, I don't get on until the next two have gone down, then I fly as soon as possible after that last crash.

I guess everyone needs to have a superstition about something.
