On The Galaxies Launch

Quiet Birth for Star Wars World is a Wired article discussing what they seem to feel is a low-key launch for this MMORPG (thanks Mike Martinez). Meanwhile, there are other ways of describing the game's birth as quiet, as problems folks have been having with sign-ups are detailed in a forum post by LucasArts' Kevin O'Hara (thanks HomeLAN Fed). There is also an announcement about this from Raph Koster saying Launch day will not count against your subscription (we can also get a wry update on the topic from The Iraqi Information Minister - thanks Hump). Finally, the intro movie for the Star Wars MMOG has been released, and is available for download from FilePlanet (registration required), FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell and Worthplaying.

The game servers were taken offline last night, and will be back up at some point this morning. This launch has not gone well, and that may be the understatement of the century.

Seems perhaps some of us predicting doom and gloom were on the mark. Maybe someday the genre will mature enough to make these disasters the exception rather than the norm.

Wait a minute, you mean to tell me SWG is having a bad launch? My god, whats next a mediocre MMORPG that people will get bored of in the next month?

I can just imagine the look of horror on every zit faced, scrawny, ass hat Star Wars fan who must have tried to log on last night.

Me? I was fighting elves in Shadowbane and masturbating to free thumbnail posts.

But hey, at least I didn't buy SWG hahaha!

Ok was it my luck that I downloaded the intro from Gamer's Hell and for 2+ mins all I got was a nice image of the SW logo with music and other noises playing in the background?

Suneel Rutan was one of the EA suits who helped to squander hundreds of millions of dollars and run EA.com into the ground, taking hundreds of talented developers and a venerable online game development company (Kesmai) along with it.

His credibility in understanding MMOs is essentially nil. Wired should have found a more knowledgeable person to write that article.

I beg to differ. I believe Germany produced both Kraftwerk and KMFDM!

Thought they were originally signed to Wax Trax in Chicago? Maybe not...or maybe I assumed that since that's where Wax Trax started.

Have they always been in Seattle?

I would hardly call first day jitters a bad launch. Yesterday was pretty bad but today I got in at about 9am EST and it's now a bit after noon and I've been in game for hours, no disconnects, very little lag. Seems the servers have shapped up quickly. I'm also on Starsider, one of the most populous servers so far.

Give it some time people, the first day problems hardly equate to a bad launch.

I, too, was able to log into the servers today and I played for one hour or so. I have not experienced any lag and the game is fun.

You just wait a bit while everyone rushes in a mad dash to be the first loser on the block, let them stress test the servers. When it all dies down you just slip in like a 40 year old whore, grab what you want, and no one even notice you.

Sasha has been living in Seattle for quite some time, this I know for sure. And he pretty much drives the band these days. I don't know where En Esh & Gunter hail from these days (who are no longer members), nor Mr. Watts of "Pig".

You're right, nin. They did sign to Wax Trax in Chicago in 1990. The lead guy, Sascha Konietzko, is originally from Germany though, so you in a sense you're right about that too. But he and some other dude originally formed the band in '84 in Paris, then it got a bit sidetracked, then he and another German dude re-formed the band again.

KMFDM originally formed in Hamburg Germany. You were right.

Sascha formed KMFDM to perform in an art exhibition in Paris and then went back to germany hooked up with En Esch and Watts. Ministry invited KMFDM to go on tour in with them for "a mind..." in '89. Sascha eventually moved to Chicago from Hamburg in '91 and then moved to Seattle in '93.

SOE games suck major ass. I'll even bother beta testing any of their crap again, much less pay to play.
