Games & The Law

STLtoday (thanks Slashdot) has more on the legal wrangling over game violence in St. Louis (story), saying: "St. Louis County officials have decided not to give up on outlawing sale of violent video games to minors despite a recent tide against their effort. Last week, county lawyers asked that the full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis review an adverse decision from a three-member panel of its judges." Also, 'POSTAL' Video Game Victorious Over U.S. Postal Service (thanks Frans) is the press release announcing that a six-year-old lawsuit brought by the U.S. Postal Service against Running with Scissors over their gratuitously violent action game "has been dismissed with prejudice" by the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Included are some barbs aimed at the Postal Service, Senator Joe Lieberman, and the postmaster general.

I am not anti-USA, I am anti-empire! I would love to see America actually come to fruition! The bill of rights is the only thing keeping us from becomming a total plutocracy, and it is being attacked and shredded at every turn.

Make sure your wearing your aluminum foil cap while typing that otherwise the CIA will be able to track your thoughts! Shhh, Quiet! Did you hear that? The stealth helicoptors are coming!

I think butchering human beings and spending almost half a trillion dollars every year to control and destroy life is probably a more disgusting display of violence than any fictitious video game or movie.

The US empire's illegal massacres in various regions throughout the globe over the course of several decades is the most repugnant activity I have witnessed.

And the media-whore press takes a close second for cheerleading this murderous rampage.

What's dumb is they ALL know kids are gonna play them anyway, this just causes them a minor inconvenience and wastes a stupid amount of tax dollars. It's all done so they can gain points for the next election with their supporters. Goddamn sheep.

I think the point is that the government doesn't have the right to enforce movie ratings. It's a voluntary effort the theaters take - and which the industry ensures that they take. So, the argument goes, retailers should be the ones enforcing game ratings.

I doubt a movie could ever be made with the level of violence and racial, ethnic, and other slurs that Postal 2 has. I don't think that games should be censored, but it should be noted that Game Producing Companies have bigger balls than movie houses.

"We're pleased with the ruling," said Vince Desi, Running With Scissors' battle-hardened CEO, "although everyone involved knows we never should have had to fight this frivolous lawsuit in the first place. Our game is funny. Theirs is sick."

see, I don't see why this is such a big deal. they restrict R-rated movies (they enforce it here pretty strongly), why not M-rated games?

If this was a matter of being allowed to sell them at ALL or not, I'd be kinda pissed.
