Games & The Law

STLtoday (thanks Slashdot) has more on the legal wrangling over game violence in St. Louis (story), saying: "St. Louis County officials have decided not to give up on outlawing sale of violent video games to minors despite a recent tide against their effort. Last week, county lawyers asked that the full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis review an adverse decision from a three-member panel of its judges." Also, 'POSTAL' Video Game Victorious Over U.S. Postal Service (thanks Frans) is the press release announcing that a six-year-old lawsuit brought by the U.S. Postal Service against Running with Scissors over their gratuitously violent action game "has been dismissed with prejudice" by the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Included are some barbs aimed at the Postal Service, Senator Joe Lieberman, and the postmaster general.

Didn't see anyone else mention this . . .

The STL today article on violence & games, says that while games don't cause violence, they could influence the form violence takes. They cite the Columbine shootings, and say that while games didn't cause that, maybe the shooters wore trench-coats because of the characters in Doom.

Huh?

I'm pretty sure I played the same Doom they're talking about - where are the friggin' trenchcoats?

Now, if those shooters had worn flourescent green body armor with grey motorbike helmets, and had been running at 90 MPH . . . I think they'd have a point then.

see, I don't see why this is such a big deal. they restrict R-rated movies (they enforce it here pretty strongly), why not M-rated games?

This is wrong. The government does NOT outlaw R rated movies to minors and they dont enforce it. There is NO LAW against an 8 year old going and seeing an R rated movie. This is an entirely voluntary system created by and enforced by the theatre industry, the government has nothing to do with it. This is why its so different.

I find it interesting that the article doesn't mention by name ANY of the people behind this renewed attempt to outlaw violent videogames. I would really love to know who the people who are so gung ho about this are, why they are so behind it and what they have to get out of it.

Da Stylin' Rastan:

You're very right that it only covers Postal not Postal 2, but the fact that it was dismissed with prejudice loosely translated from legalese means that the judge said not only is this suit dismissed, but the plaintiff can't waste the court or anyone else's time by filing a similar lawsuit in the future.

That said, I think both Postal and Postal 2 sucked balls.

A liberal wants to do away with more of our personal freedoms, real shocker there. What you expect from Liberalman. Thank god he didn't become Vice President, he's probably just pissed that he doesn't get his cut out of the action.

Wow, how about you grow up.

I'm all for realistic games, but lets not get vindictive.

Video game violence is in the same league as film violence. It should be controlled to keep it out of the hands of young people.

Go back to Postal 2.

I personally invite liberman to come over to my house and kiss my ass. I'm glad he lost this stupid moral battle. Maybe he'll see that not everyone likes their games sugar coated and censored. I love killing shit in games and the bloodier the better. We need a video game where Liberman gets shot and decapitated. Maybe like a DOOM3 secret, sort of like the dopefish.........

Remember that this lawsuit concers the ORIGINAL Postal, not Postal 2. The first Postal was an excellent game, with many innovations that carried into further top/side scrolling hybrids.

It's too bad Postal 2 ended up so spectacularly craptastic that I've lost all respect for RWS that I once had for their original creation.

Shock Value > Gameplay != Fun.

-DSR

EDIT: moved the equation onto its own line for easier viewing. For those who aren't in the know: != means does not equal.

I wish the US postal service would have won so maybe we'd never have to see another horrible game come from RWS ever again.

As for this... some films do include such graphic violence and racial/sexual slurs as Postal/2 but they are the fringe things, same as Postal/2 is on the fringe of the gaming industry.

As games get more realistic you can expect these rules to tighten and rightfully so. If Postal/2 were made totally photo-realistic and played like a movie it would be banned, because any film that realistic would be banned too.

Games should be rated, and the ratings enforced, same as for film.

This case should have never been brought up. But of course it wasn't and wasted everyones time and money. You can thank the liberals in the justice system for that.
