Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing

There are several sites offering promotions that could land a spot in the beta testing of Final Fantasy XI for the PC. ATI Technologies is offering spots in the test to the first 1000 eligible applicants, FilePlanet is accepting applications from their paid subscribers over the next couple of days for the giveaway of an unspecified random number of spots, and likewise, GameSpot and Stratics Central are giving away some beta spots to their paid subscribers as well. Finally, The Final Fantasy Vault is holding a trivia contest to give away their spots. The Vault, Stratics, and FilePlanet giveaways are for U.S. and Canadian registrants only, but the ATI site mentions no such restriction, and details about the GameSpot registration cannot be viewed by non-subscribers.

The first games where more RPG.. and did have lots of storyline/talking. The latter ones(PSX/PS2 versions) have been leaning towards interactive movies. Which a lot of the fans don't like. While the improved graphics are great, the loss of some of the RPG roots and making them into simpler games (for more mass appeal according to Square) has been a sad point in the series.

As for minimal continuity, as Zar said, it's more like almost none. The ages of the theroy has never really been confirmed, and I can't really think of any of the first 6 games that kept the same story let alone the same characters. I think one of them continued with the previous games childern, but that was as close as you got as the storylines have always been totaly different.

Overall I'd have to say all RPGS are interactive movies in some way, they are just seperated by how much you can do between the storyline elements. I can only hope they go back to the more RPG side, but it always seems that the more space you take up with the cutscenes, and better graphics the less you will have for the storyline/scripting/world exploring.

at least there won't be any 30 minute cut scenes with bad voice-overs in FF XI

Are they missing the definition of "Final?"

My thoughts exactly

So, they're all basically RPG's, but they have only minimal continuity in story and characters? Interesting. It's almost like a series of pulp fantasy novels or something by the same author.

It sounds similar to a children's series like "Harry Potter" or "Goosebumps". You just keep coming back for more stories.

Are these games more gameplay or more "interactive movie"?

"only open to residents of the US or Canada"

Man that sucks - if it's a shipping issue then I'd be quite happy to DL the beta myself and pay to fax the NDA to their ofices.

We need more game developers in Australia.

Yea, one of the things that makes FF so great is that each game has almost nothing to do with the game in front of it. So you were in a totaly new world/storyline every time. Sadly this has been ruined by the hacked out FFX-2.

Also one of the great things about the early FF games was that the first one started bad in the stone age, and then each game was held in a new age... thus making people think that if it was the same world, there was just like 500 years or so between games. Each game having different gameplay mechanisms to it but staying near a basic formula for RPGs is also a big plus.

Well the thing abut the FF games is that they're mainly fantastically popular in Japan, and then they're vicariously popular in America since America like Japanese culture. Ergo, if it was an American developer I think Americans would be more tired and cynical of the series.

The other thing is that the games more or less have nothing to do with each other - it's not like say Mario where you think "how many times can they save this princess?", the stories are different every time. The main consistency is the same developer/designers.

Finally though, I don't think this 11th game has much to do with the gameplay of the previous games - it's mainly just the name in common.

How long have they been making these FF games? They just keep coming. And movie to boot. How different are these games from each other in terms of gameplay/story?

Most other companies would be widely criticized for milking their franchise, but not these guys. It seems like the more they make, the more people latch onto them.

This has to be one of the most successful captive (nay, incarcerated) audiences ever generated. I want to run a company with a product like that!

It's useless to give them to ATi's owner, they should sent the beta kit to GeForce owner to convince them that ATi is better then nVidia... YES, that makes sense... lot's of it... I want in dammit :/

And there's probably no chance I'm in the first 1000 e-mails. Who knows...

IF THAT WERE TRUE, I WOULD BE COMPLETELY OFFENDED BY ATI'S BUSINESS PRACTICES!!!!111111111

Now, if they were to give them to any/all 9700 Pro owners, that would be a complete different - a completely acceptable - matter.

Just now realizing that I do, in fact, own such a card ;),
