Star Wars Galaxies Date & Subscriptions

A press release on The Star Wars Galaxies Website (thanks Jody Overstreet and SWG Warcry) has a release date for the Star Wars MMORPG as well as a description of the game's subscription plans. Here's a bit:
LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. today announced Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, the highly anticipated initial installment of the first Star Wars massively multiplayer online (MMO) game series, will release June 26, 2003. The Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided online fan community now exceeds more than 500,000 registered members.

At launch Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided will offer four subscription plan options: Month-to-month - $14.99; three months - $14.00 per month; six months - $13.00 per month; and 12 months - $12.00 per month. By subscribing to any of the latter three plans, players can expect savings of up to 20 percent over the month-to-month rate. Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided has a suggested retail price of $49.95, and includes a 30-day subscription to the game. A special collector's edition, which includes a book of game-related art, in-game wearables, pewter figurine, lapel pin and patch, and a signed manual, will be available for a suggested retail price of $79.95.

Why can't sony stay in the realm of the average player? They must have a lot of stock in chipsets or graphics cards. Try EVE ONLINE, great mmorpg that manages to make a great game that is not at your expenditure.

The game runs fine on my secondary machine. I get like 40FPS with the settings on high on 1024x768. Im running a AMD Athlon XP 1600+, 1GB PC2100 RAM, GeForce4 Ti4200 with AGP 8x on a Gigabyte GA-7VAX-A Motherboard. My main machine gets about 60 FPS with alot of peeps around but its an Athlon XP 3000+, 1.5GB PC3700 RAM and an ATI Radeon 9800PRO 256MB on the same board as the other machine. If people are having performance problems and they are running a better system then my secondary one, they must be doing something really wrong. I think the game just frustrated them so much they are exagerating on how it runs. I havent enountered a bug or problem in this game in the last 3 days.

Okay, I watched the Vision Quest. I'll fire the SWG beta up again tonight, and see if it's really changed that much since the installation broke.

HOWEVER

Someone must tell me where I can go to find people to interact with. One of the biggest problems during beta was being completely unable to find people who knew what was going on and learn from them.

I don't care which server, planet, whatever. If I'm too late, oh well - if I'm not, I'll come at it with an open mind and someone can do their best to persuade me.

WAZ,

Please stop writing such conspicuous pro-Sony tripe on the internet. The object is to fool these people into thinking you're a average Star Wars loser. Try putting your system specs into your signature, or for god sakes using 'lol' or 'wtf' in your posts.

Meet at my office Wednesday for an important 'covert' training. Bring your Chewbacca outfit with the hole in the crotch.

Right, looking at those screenshots, the social aspect seems to be the best part, but my point was that one can get social interaction on the same niveau by, for example, posting on this forum, for zero dollars a month, not to mention real life.

I don't see anything else of interest going on on those screenshots, though the Naboo vistas do look really nice.

You know what really bugs me? Galaxies is a social game. It's not Battlefield 1942. I think people truly believe that they'll be walking straight into Episode Four. They won't be. I think that the devs have done an amazing task building something like this and it's going to get better and better.

In fact, the last think I want to see in the game is a bunch of whiny Star Wars fans moaning about how crap it is.

They should go play Jedi Knight instead.

I was looking for a way to basically say that and I knew I would screw it up some way or another. That statement was well written enough to say everything as it should be. The real question is not about the game, its about if its worth your $15 a month to have fun. Doesn't matter what you do to reach your high in the game, it matters if it was worth it or not. Personally I think just associating with people in a star wars enviornment is worthiness enough. I can't think of how many hours I spent talking it up with 4 or 5 people all in the same camp while crafting and sampling for minerals. I guess it all depends on what fun you find in the game. If galaxies doesnt suit your taste, then perhaps you should try the game 'There'. If that game doesnt make you want to play SWG, then you need serious help.

WAZ. You da man. I dont think I could have said it better myself. This game is what YOU make it. Thats what makes it worth while. I've been in it since BETA 2 and I had my doubts. But you basically took the words that I couldn't think to say out of my mind. Its what brings us into any MMORPG.

I must admit to being quite disillusioned by these comments.. then I read this.

There is a lot of talk on the boards. Some of it is exciting and some of it is just stupid and some of it is actually pretty mean. After spending two years of my life as a member of this community, I need to say some things. I am not defending this game so much as I am setting the record straight.

Some people are saying this game is not what they expected. That’s fine.
Some people are saying this game is going to fail. That’s wrong.
Some people are saying there is nothing to do.

Here is what I have to say on the matter.

Right off the top, I’m going to tell you that as of Friday, I thought the launch date was too early. I was ready to tell you that this game wasn’t ready for launch and that they were making a mistake. As of this morning (Sunday), I will tell you that I am awestruck by the performance changes I have seen in the last three days and that this game is ready to go.

The whole dev team is obviously working diligently every waking moment on this game and I imagine they are all suffering from the sweet floaty goodness of sleep deprivation and the fantasmagoria of coding on a caffeine high, which every good geek knows is “the sweet spot”.

I have to change my position because I logged on this morning and everything played beautifully. That’s right. We got ourselves an office full of super-creative guys wrapping up a dream project and tripping the mind fantastic and they are all focused on wrapping up this first phase of the game and launching it into the free market economy. These freaks are on a one way speed trip to June 26th and god help anything that gets in their way because I think dead bodies would start showing up in the dumpsters outside their offices if anyone got in their way at this point.

But lets look at this sensibly and plan from the worst case scenario, because things only get better from there. The devs may get the game completely debugged, but I believe it will only be “mostly” debugged and that’s ok with me. I am still going to buy the game and I’m going to blow my free month submitting bug reports and I gotta tell ya, I’ve been in since Beta 1, Day 1, minute 1 and Im sick and friggin tired of writing bug reports.

But that’s not going to stop me. It is surely going to stop others, but hey, as far as Im concerned its their loss.

Why?

Because I have had fun every single minute I have logged in to this game environment. Even when they were making server changes and we all hung out in the chat room and the boards, it was fun from beginning to end. Its _the people_ that will make every minute of the game worth every last penny.

On top of the constant, LIVE content that is going to be going on in this game, the game has such rich features in it now that there will be more than enough to keep you busy for six months. In that six months, we are going to see vehicles come in, more content and I know literally thousands of players that will be driving PvP events, role playing events, party events and every other event you can imagine. I know because its happening. Its happening right now with Beta testers and its going to keep on going.

Even still, the proof is in the pudding. As a long time commentator in this community, I have called the devs out every time I thought they were wrong and I’ve nearly avoided a bunch of trouble because of my big mouth. I believe in facing life honestly and without fear.

So without further adieu, lets get on with the visions and the mojo.

I have collected a great many screen shots and added some flavor text to let you know what was going on in the shot, why it was either fun or aggravating and YOU decide whether or not you want to be a part of this online phenomena.

Take a journey with me from Beta 1 to Beta 3 and see what I saw. See the hard work of the devs and all the changes they made at the requests of testers and see all the fun we had…

Here is my Vision Quest.

Take a walk with me.

I would to clarify something about my post. I have a lot of MMORPG experience and know what I am talking about. If I cancel a preorder, there is a good reason behind it, trust me. I played Everquest for 4 years, played DAOC, AO, AC, and even WWII Online. I posted my opinion to hopefully inform other players out there that they should save their money or they're going to be severely disappointed. Good luck!

SWG was going to be my first MMORPG experience. When it was announced I was very excited. I remember joking about locking myself in a room with this game and never coming out. It was Star Wars! I could live Star Wars!

Then I started spending to much time on the SWG forums. I learned about all sorts of decisions that made this thing less and less like Star Wars. I gave up on the idea of playing it about a year ago. I was simply to disappointed with decisions that broke continuity and realism.

With the posts I've read today I think I've made the right choice.

Troll, this is hardly the place for a well reasoned, thoughtful post on the problems that lie at the heart of every MMORPG.

There's your problem right there, ArKhaine; you haven't even played it. If you had, you'd realize that there is no where to explore. It's all the same randomly generated landscape (whether it be desert, jungle, forest, etc.).

It's hard to immerse yourself into a game which lacks content. But, I guess you'd know that if you'd actually played it. Quite simply, there's only a few things you can do which are ongoing, and those few things run out in a matter of days. No content!

The issue is not whether it's an action game or a roleplaying game, the issue is that it's not even close to being finished. Yeah, people will buy it. Most likely because they haven't experienced it in beta or because they're Star Wars fanatics. I'm sure some people will even enjoy it, good for them. But as you can see, most of the beta people who have posted here and have experience with previous MMOGs say it's going to be bad at launch. Read some of the longer posts again, they explain why they think it's bad.

This doesn't mean they're biased. Bias means something is prohibiting impartial judgement. I really can't imagine most of these people have some ongoing hatred of Star Wars which would make them give a biased review just to tarnish the game's image. These are their observations about why the game is not ready to be released yet.

And seeing as you haven't even played it, you can neither give a biased nor an unbiased opinion of the game.
