Star Wars Galaxies Date & Subscriptions

A press release on The Star Wars Galaxies Website (thanks Jody Overstreet and SWG Warcry) has a release date for the Star Wars MMORPG as well as a description of the game's subscription plans. Here's a bit:
LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. today announced Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, the highly anticipated initial installment of the first Star Wars massively multiplayer online (MMO) game series, will release June 26, 2003. The Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided online fan community now exceeds more than 500,000 registered members.

At launch Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided will offer four subscription plan options: Month-to-month - $14.99; three months - $14.00 per month; six months - $13.00 per month; and 12 months - $12.00 per month. By subscribing to any of the latter three plans, players can expect savings of up to 20 percent over the month-to-month rate. Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided has a suggested retail price of $49.95, and includes a 30-day subscription to the game. A special collector's edition, which includes a book of game-related art, in-game wearables, pewter figurine, lapel pin and patch, and a signed manual, will be available for a suggested retail price of $79.95.

So judging from what alot of you beta testers have said about this excuse for a MMOG, would it be safe to assume that it would be an insult to EQ to call it "EQ in space" as som many others initially dubbed the project?

sucktitude

The magnitude in which something sucks

I like it.

Creston, just nodding at all the fellow Beta Testers who say that this game is just sucktitude to the max.

FALLOUT: TACTICS OWNED! Until they patched it and destroyed the multiplayer. But man, for that first month, it was the best online game EVER.

As much as I love the Fallout universe, I think it'd be damn hard to make that into a MMOG. The character advancement system isn't designed for that kind of longevity or balance. I mean, would you really want to play a MMOG with a combat system that includes 1-hit kill crit shots? Well, it'd be hard to do right anyway.

Hey now scottish, I don't mean to get too off-topic but Tactics was a decent game albeit void of any plot or story. I like to think of it not as a fallout game but more like Jagged Alliance after the atom bombs fell :).

EDIT: in addition tho, BoS (not Tactics) was a piece of crap.

"Now...if someone could just make Fallout Online, I'll be set. "

Now theres an idea!

Oh God, don't let Interplay hear that! They might just make such a game and destroy what was left of the Fallout name after shit like Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel. Then, after the game crashes and burns due to extreme sucktitude, Interplay won't have any money left to operate and will die a horrible fiery death in which Black Isle studios is incinerated.

The game is riding entirely on its license.

It is a game made for Star Wars fans and not gamers; the bad part is, I'm a big Star Wars fan (geek) and I still hate it. I was so hyped for it, but after playing it I cancelled my preorder. Not only doesn't it live up to the hype, it doesn't live up to the license either.

It's a bad game. Avoid it like the plague. If you insist on buying it, wait a few months first. This game is THE disappointment of the year, if not in the history of gaming.

You're a fool if you buy this POS, and an even bigger fool to pay 15 US per month for it.

Dr.Del:

Yes, of course it's a business. But there's also different practices between these businesses. SOE and LucasArts seem to have went the greedy way by means of riding the franchise of one of the most popular movie series in history. But in doing that, they have failed to create something worth the money they're charging. It's just name recognition purchasing.

I'm not going to buy it. How is voicing my opinion of its current status ruining it for you and others? My opinion is not binding to your gaming decisions.

And yes, there comes crashes and bugs with every new release. What I and most of the other beta testers here are saying: SWG is not ready for release because there's no point in progressing within it, almost no content and hardly balanced. If anything is going to ruin your experience with it, it is the lack of quality the game itself possesses.

I just hope isn't as shitty as you say it is.

Hope is a cardinal virtue, it just usually never accomplishes much.

Believe me Scott, I was very excited about the idea of a persistent Star Wars world, being one of the biggest Star Wars fans alive, but what Sony is shitting out the door isn't worthy of being called a game, much less being called Star Wars.

As someone below aptly stated, it's a glorified chatroom for Star Wars geeks. And in fact, that's about everything there is to do, too. Chat to other Star Wars players. Which could be cool, except that Sony and the Devs feel no need whatsoever to enforce a Star Wars feel in its characters, so you'll see Bothans running around called Luke n00bWalker, Wookiees called Grrrrrrrrr, and Zabraks called Kill4M4ST4 and PopeyeDaSailorman. There goes your immersion for you.

Ofcourse, Star Wars is a world full of droids, but there are about five droids in any given town on any given world, and none of them really do anything except walk around bleeping at random (why can't a player play a droid I wonder?), and really, the movies were full of openly declared Rebels walking around on Corellia and Naboo and other such places, right?

Sigh.

Creston

Edit : Azraelot, you just know that Sony ejaculates all over itself thinking of the money that Lineage makes.
Funny enough, according to the few reports that I've read about it, the few which did not involve players getting killed for real about what happened in that game, Lineage actually WORKED out of the box, and its developers listened to their players to determine which way to take their ongoing enhancement and content developing process. There's a novel concept...

Jeez, the most popular online game OF ALL TIME Half Life has 100,000 average players, with the rest of them less than 10,000.

As of Jan. 03, Everquest had over 450,000 active subscribers. So Galaxies would have to be the most popular MMORPG of all time to reach their target, but that's not impossible, given the number of people who will buy any shovelware with Star Wars on the box, let alone a box with pretty pictures on it.

And, for the record, the most popular online game OF ALL TIME (excluding shit like Yahoo! Hearts) is Lineage. 4,000,000 accounts (that's not a typo) in South Korea, a country with 46,000,000 million people in it. And almost half of them play at home in the traditional subscription format; most of the rest play at gaming cafes.

Edit: My numbers are from here:

http://pw1.netcom.com/~sirbruce/Subscriptions.html

Another edit: I think it's worth comparing this to Final Fantasy XI, another game based on a well-known property. Despite the fact that the game requires you to buy a modem and a hard drive, at a cost of at least 150 dollars, plus a monthly subscription, the game has over 200,000 subscribers. We'll see if gamers are still in love with Star Wars, I guess; after the past few years of crappy games (except Outcast) and a couple of shitty movies, I'm not sure people are all that interested. At least it's set in the original trilogy.

I am in beta and everyone is right SWG is not ready for release but thats not the bad part.

SWG is being made for Star Wars fans not for people that play games.

If you want fun strategic combat or a complex char system look elsewhere.

SWG has the worst char speccing and combat system of any game I have ever played. It is the most boring and un-fun game I have ever played.

There are a a lot of good things about SWG but they are all cosmetic. The Gameplay is worse than awful. I wouldn't play this game if they paid me. It's that bad.

Unfortunately this game will never improve in patches as its problems are poor game design.

I am so dissapointed in this game. SWG is all about making its marketing department happy rather than attempting to make a game for people that play games.

It's a glorified pretty chat room for Star Wars Geeks and nothing more.

Unfortunately they will be successfull encouraging other companies to make subpar games like this. Not concidentally they are keeping up the NDA in hopes people won't hear how bad this game is.

To me SWG is bigger than one game its about rewarding greedy companies who don't care about making quality games.
