Star Wars Galaxies Date & Subscriptions

A press release on The Star Wars Galaxies Website (thanks Jody Overstreet and SWG Warcry) has a release date for the Star Wars MMORPG as well as a description of the game's subscription plans. Here's a bit:
LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. today announced Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, the highly anticipated initial installment of the first Star Wars massively multiplayer online (MMO) game series, will release June 26, 2003. The Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided online fan community now exceeds more than 500,000 registered members.

At launch Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided will offer four subscription plan options: Month-to-month - $14.99; three months - $14.00 per month; six months - $13.00 per month; and 12 months - $12.00 per month. By subscribing to any of the latter three plans, players can expect savings of up to 20 percent over the month-to-month rate. Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided has a suggested retail price of $49.95, and includes a 30-day subscription to the game. A special collector's edition, which includes a book of game-related art, in-game wearables, pewter figurine, lapel pin and patch, and a signed manual, will be available for a suggested retail price of $79.95.

Lets Break it down a bit....

I apreciate you trying to break it down, but...

Where can I begin to explain the failed logic here? Is "25Mhz" the 'rating' for peak usage? average usage? min usage? Like in a database you cannot break it down to "Mhz per node" To many variables are involved to break it down that simply. And these numbers? where did you get them from?

I think we know where..

You sir know not of what you speak, please put this data back in the anus in which it came from. Come back when you have some idea of how large scale computing works.

It costs alot to maintain servers in an MMORPG. Lets Break it down a bit. For a Server to run on this magnitude, you need about 25MHz per player. Then on top of that, you need about 8MB of Ram per player. Say the Average server holds 3000 people, 25MHz x 3000 = 75,000MHz. Plus the Ram 8MB x 3000 = 24,000MB. Thats one expensive server. Of course there are ways to bring it down, this is the formula a buddy showed me. I think a Rack of 10 Dual XEON systems with 2GB of ram each is more realistic (30GHz, 20GB Ram total). Then on top of that, the bandiwidth. 1 Mbit per person x 3000 = 3000 Mbit. Now if memory serves me correct, that ranks up around the OC-128 Mark. So you looking at at least $250,000 US for one complete Server setup, plus an average of (off the top of my head) perhaps about $150,000 US Bandwidth and maintenance per month. Now times that by 10 (say theres 10 servers at launch, theres 4 right now). Now say you can charge nothing a month to play the game, let alone less than $15 a month. But half the people here are right. Wait a bit before the game comes out. A couple months, keep an eye on the forums to see when the vehicles hit and the mayjority of bugs are fixed.

is the combat in SWG handled like a FPS in real-time or more like "click on opponent and sit back"?

Target, click on attack and sit back.

Although, overall I really like the interface for the game, its very customizable. In beta2 there was a preset for "UO Style" where your camera was a 3rd person overhead that you could manipulate, and instead of pressing W to move forward you just clicked on the locale and your avatar would move there. Sorta like NWN. This preset was gone in beta3, and I didn't play with it enough to see if I could configure it that way again manually. But there was a truckload of options for asigning your mouse / keyboard buttons and movements.

Yea but PS2 games you can play with a friend at the same console. I don't understand why all of a sudden it is okay for a monthly fee to play a game. Don't tell me bc Lucas said so

I also downloaded AO but opted not to subscribe. Now if I had paid $50 or $80 for it, I might have been motivated to learn to like it and possibly subscribed. As it happened I played it for a day.

I picked up DAoC and AC2 both for full price, AC2 wasn't that bad really, just lacking on players. After a few months I canned my subscription, but not becuase the game was that lacking, I actually enjoyed it. So i wasn't so mad about blowing the initial 50 bucks.

DAoC on the otherhand, ugh. Goodbye money, I hardly knew ye. What the hell was I thinking? After a few days I finially realized that there really was no saving grace to this game. GFX were awful, gameplay was lame, combat... well it was about the same as AO, which isn't to say it was good.

Anyone who is really looking for a MMO home will go into a game with an open mind, so save me the line about wasting money being motivation. "I bought it so by god I better learn how to play this POS...". Thats a terible excuse. I personally think an open and free trial would speak volumes to a companies commitment to the player, and improve a newcomers first impression of the game.

On a side note, the free week in AO is really not enough, AO has one of the steepest learning curves of any MMO I have ever played. With NCU, implants and 95% of the weapons being completely worthless its hard for newcomers to pick it up in a week. So I don't blame you for giving up on it, I probably would have too if I wasn't so hard up for it

The last thing I want to do is defend SWG as I think it might be the worst game ever made. But, I think this idea of a free trial is garbage. Yes AO has it but AO is not a new game its 2 years old. If you want to try a new game pay for it otherwise wait.

The points that I think are relevant here are:

1. SOE is arrogantly overcharging.

2. They are releasing an unfinshed untested game and abusing thier SW license.

3. They are making a game for non gamers. The game design is awful. Combat is the most boring of any game I have ever played. The entire combat and character speccing system needs to be thrown out and re-developed. Basically as I stated before this game is just a glorified chat room for Star Wars Geeks.

4. This game is a complete Rip-off and it abuses its Star Wars license. It's all flash over substance. There are a lot of nice things about SWG but they are all cosmetic. The game has no subtsance.

5. They are keeping the NDA up to release so as to gouge as many people on initial sales before the word gets out how bad this game really is.

6. Buying a game like this only encourages other companies to make bad similar games. The best thing can happen here is for people to just say to no to the lies and bad quality like they did to AC2 and keep this kind of game off the market. I am sure like AC2 SOE will pay the major sites through advertising to give them good reviews. But hopefully word of mouth will kill this game.

I totally agree Jaritsu.

For a MMOG there is no fucking way I'll be spending money on the game, and have have to pay 12/month to use it. Especially if I can't try it first.

I tried the free trial of Anarchy Online, I was seriously impressed, and very close to going for it. But my system was a little too slow, and the choppyness of the game made me hesitant. That and I just don't have 5hours a day to devote to vidgames these days. Maybe inbetween girlfriends or something

Man, some of you people need to get a job a quit bitching about $144 for 13 months (first month's free).

Look at all those kids buying PS2/Gamecube games costing $50 each, and those games dont nearly cost as much to produce and dont require $six-figure$ servers to run on!

Ok, fair enough, but the client should be downloadable with a free at least week of Play. after the week, if the game is good I would be willing to pay the full retail price for the initial box. AO does this, as do a few other MMO's I believe.

The overhead excuse is a weak one though, at 15 bucks a month they will surely cover the overhead, it just seems that they are not willing to put their talent to the test and thusly cannot count on it to come through for them. In other words, they aren't confedent enough in their product to be allow a try-before-you-buy, and I am left asking myself "I wonder why?".

They could provide such a plan, but will not. Not because its not posible, but rather simply because they choose not to. Makes ya wonder where their priorities are...

#115, I can agree with you, but for a difrent reason. The best thing about getting in early on a MMO is exploits, exploits, exploits. How I wish I was savy enough early on in the UO days to do all the "GM this in an hour" exploits. And don't get me started on the AO free money bug...

Maybe if they made the game disks free.. or only 15 bucks or something i would.. But adding this price up yearly its just not worth it.

I would personally like to say good job to the developers working 16 hour days to get this damn game done. Sony exec's on the other hand can lick a fat one!

I dont know what some people expected from this game. Did everyone think they would be in a white robe and running around with a light saber? I certainly didn't.

I love it when people say this... what other MMO features "player housing" on release and has done so well? How about the bazaar? Dynamic spawning? The 1000's of crafting items that can be made and the proffessions they tried to balance and tweak in order to make them.

I really cant wait to play it...even with some bugs. btw, order it online cause Bestbuy is charging $59.99 for it!

If you want to experience "the greatest Star Wars saga ever told... Yours!" as the trailer advertises, you'd be better off logging out and just daydreaming up a story for yourself without the game getting in the way.

Can that involve you in a princess leigha outfit and me as Jabba the Hutt?

So tell me, how long have you worked at Sony?

Accually I worked for SONY Canada a number of years ago in the Playstation 2 department for about 6 months, then was transfered to SOE. I was there for a little over a year and quit because of an incredable offer as a Damage Control Manager at SOE of America. I just support the game because I get paid to. Its just a different type of gaming experience thats all. Its not as basic as everquest, one of our other fine products that has absolutely no problems. Call it what you will, because I'll be sure to correct it because thats my job.. I support it 100%. Now wheres my paycheck?

The pressed CD is older than what we are currently testing! My guess is this..the last patch took 5+ hours to download.
I say they pushed that patch out for that patch makes it the shelf version that gets pressed

We work on looking for bugs they fix what they can up till the 17th, thats when the cd's would have to be pressed and boxed to meet shipping dates.

When people log on on the 26th, another large patch to fix some of the problems from the last patch will go out
they are patching today...
So todays patch will go out on the 26th when people log on along with the new stuff we find after tonights patch.

Plus, people will also be bitching about the 3500 player limit cap on servers..

Major f'in problems for the dev team!
I'm not activating my free month probably till August when the major patches are through and problems get semi-fixed.
