Out of the Blue

In a note related to the discussion of drinking water yesterday, I found this sort of interesting. We use one of those large Brita deals that sits on a counter (as opposed to the pitcher kind), and when I changed the filter just the other day, I got this impulse to clean out the inside, which seems sort of redundant since it's just water being run through it. Once I started cleaning the white plastic upper part, I noticed something that was not evident to me at first because I am colorblind... a yellow film coating the entire inside of the water reservoir. This cleaned out pretty easily, but now I'm thinking I should have sent it to a lab. Anyway, regardless of toxicity, I sure am glad we're using the filter if it prevents us from ingesting whatever this stuff is.

Yeah I read about this a while back and had forgotten most of the detail, which prompted me to look it up out of curiosity when you mentioned you were slightly color blind.

I just found a site with much better info: http://www.icomm.ca/geneinfo/deut.htm

A friend of mine at work is color blind and he always asked me not to pick certain colors in Warcraft 3 because he couldn't differentiate my units from other people's units.

Thanks Bronco, I'll pass it along to my folks, but I'm fairly certain that my dad has heard about it, considering his job involved water quality management

Ooops... It's not as simple as I thought when I wrote my first post.

Indeed, your question prompted me to do a little more research into my problem, and one of the things I learned was that the description you offered at first was not quite right.

I also learned that it seems pretty obvious I have "Anomalous Trichromasy," which means I see three colors, but abnormally. I specifically have "Deuteranomaly," a weakness with green. This is probably not unexpected, since it's the most common type of color blindness.

What was interesting to learn about along the way are the three very rare instances of color deficiency: It's uncommon to have problems with blue, to the extent that this condition is apparently difficult to test for. It's also rare, but indeed possible, to suffer from total color blindness and basically see the world in black and white. Finally, I always knew color deficiency to be a sex-linked gene, but did not know that there are a very small percentage of females who have it.

Our tub at home has to be scrubbed quite often because it will turn orange from the water and we cant use our tap water for ironing, makes white clothes turn yellowy orange.

Ever try this:

http://www.redbgone.com/

or this:

http://www.ironout.com/

They both work just as they say. Many public water companies and municipal authorities will reimburse you if you need it.

If you are supplied your tap water via a community system it is likely that your neighbors have the same problems. If you all make it known to the people in charge that you are having these problems they can and will work with you to resolve them, if possible.

Ok, enough work stuff at one of the few fun places I have.

Offer still stands if anyone needs help with deciphering the water quality results otherwise I'm heading to a gaming thread.

Ooops... It's not as simple as I thought when I wrote my first post. Here's a good explanation of the different hue spaces: for most animals and colorblind people, trichromat people, and tetrachromat animals.

I would've thought it would be iron deposits. Our tub at home has to be scrubbed quite often because it will turn orange from the water and we cant use our tap water for ironing, makes white clothes turn yellowy orange.

Transformers movie: Lets all face it, its gonna suck. Its gonna be a CGI crap fest, if even that. We all know how hollywood works. Hopefully Im wrong but meh, we will see.

My life although no one cares: I got a call yesterday to be interviewed for an entry level posistion by a very well established game design company. I put some thought into it and realized that although it is entry level, I need to work on my skills more because I would simply be wasting thiers and my time. Also, although its only 2 hours away I couldnt afford to move to where they are right now. I have a goal now, though. Save up money and get my ass working more on the said abilities that werent said, heh. I think that I made a very...professional decision and maybe when I try back with them thatll be some extra brownie points. It hurts wondering what if but I think in the end its better for me to say I suck then for them so say I suck, heh.

Anyways, I just had to get that out, thanks for reading, move along, nothing to see here but pigeons.

Blue, are you dichromatic? Do you know which set of cones is missing from your retinas?

Dichromats' eyes can only recognize 2 primary colors (RG, RB or GB) instead of all 3 primary colors (RGB) which trichromats, the norm, can see.

The Yellow Film is Sulfur, and it won't hurt you...

I guess it is possible that it's sulfur but I'd think if there was enough of it in his water for it to precipitate out of suspension he would already know what it was based upon the amazing stink. I've never seen sulfur precipitate out of potable water, but we don't have a high incidence of sulfur in the water around here. Our major problems revolve around manganese.

So Blue, if your water (your hot water esp.) stinks like a burnt match/rotten eggs - it's sulfur.

Sulfur is primarily a problem for well water supply sources. Sulfur can occur in surface water supplies, but not that often.

Ultimately if you or anyone else reading this is served by a public water provider, call them. Ask them for their recent EPA and state water quality tests for your area. They will be more than happy to answer all of your questions regarding your water quality.

If you get actual test results and need help interpreting them post them here or email me. I'll lend a hand.

"Joking aside, I know that being colorblind doesn't mean that the person only sees things in shades of gray, but what I don't know is whether or not some colorblind people have it worse than others - perhaps to the point of seeing no color at all."

I'm not really sure myself if people can be colorblind to the extreme of seeing only black and white, but I know that it's not such a bad thing to be color blind. The Army is looking for color blind snipers, because they can detect motion easily- that enemy camoflauge doesn't fool them one bit.

I went outside my office to watch the Mars rover launch. One of the benefits of working at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station!
If you like bass, there's nothing like a launch! Of course, the Delta II is nothing compared to a Titan IV or the shuttle. The shuttle landings are neat too, although you don't see anything unless you're at the runway. The double sonic boom shakes everything!

That article on caffine explains a few things for me. I have some sort of wierd condition in which if i have anything that contains caffine (including chocolate) I get really sleepy. One time I had a small drink (about half a shot) from an energy drink (rockstar) and I ened up passing out on the floor of my friends appartment for 3 hours. So this explains why I got so tired at dinner 2 nights ago. At least i will never be an insomniac *grins*
