Half-Life 2 Q&A

HomeLan Fed's Half-Life 2 Q&A is online, talking with Valve's Gabe Newell about what can de revealed about plans for their shooter sequel. Along the way, they cover a good deal of ground, confirm that they still expect to make their September 30 release date, and more. Here's a bit on the reasons behind setting the game in the fictional European location of City 17:
Within the story, there are reasons why you are in City 17. Outside of what is happening in the story, two factors influenced our inclusion of City 17 - the first was that Viktor Antonov grew up in Romania and without really intending to he got a bunch of the artists excited about an art direction that drew heavily on eastern European source material, and the second was that thematically present day eastern Europe exists at a really interesting crossroad between the past and the future which resonates with what goes on in Half-Life 2.

HomeLAN - If Half-Life does make its fall date that means it will be competing with id Software directly with Doom III, Epic with UT2004, and Remedy with Max Payne 2. How does Valve feel about this upcoming battle of the action game titans this fall?

Gabe Newell - I think it's great. I can't wait to buy all of these games and play them. It's not a zero sum game. If someone buys a good game, they want more good games to play. If they buy a bad game, then they are less likely to buy games in the future. We all benefit when gamers are excited and passionate about their hobby.

that will be one hell of month when they all come out !!

Same with HalfLife2 until less than a fortnight ago. Your point?

[edit]As for that Gabe Newell quote, so true, but sadly, 95% of gamers will start a holy war against [game of choice] In terms of games, I can't wait. In terms of community, I wish it was 5+ years ago, back with Quake1. (My god.. is Quake turning 10 soon?)

According to this link at shacknews:
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/26715

"Take2 would be scaling back their E3 presence next year and they are hoping for a Max Payne2 release around January of 2004."

Just to clear things up.

True but it should be pointed out that those 95% are the hardcore gamers, not the general gaming public. I think most people don't give a crap about what game you play or why, only fanboys try to turn everything into a pissing contest. I myself would tend to agree with Gabe's statement, it sounds like good gaming all around and the more good games the better.

No doubt, on the bright side I just need to leave a computer on any given forum or newsgroup to heat the house this winter. "Damn it's chilly today, I'd better open up that really nasty Doom 3 vs. HL2 thread."

DOOM3 will be suX0rs, HL2 will ownz3d j00 (and j00r m0th3r)

With that out of the way, Gabe's statement is at best, optimistic, and more likely just diplomatic. I'll probably buy and play both but some people won't be able to afford both. Just like movie releases are sometimes delayed so as to avoid going up against the latest big blockbuster..

Maybe the timing is just coincidence that both teams were ready for their release in Sep. but it would be nice if the gaming scene wasn't like; years of crappy games, followed by a logjam of great games. Oh well, better than no great games at all I guess.

I'm glad to see that at least your motives for bashing DOOM3 are pure: Just looking out for the poor little guy who has no cash.

not really. movies are only in theaters for a short time to make cash while hl2 and the other big games will be on the shelves at full price for upwards of a year.

"Take2 would be scaling back their E3 presence next year and they are hoping for a Max Payne2 release around January of 2004."

Shacknews does a great job, but they didn't quite get that right. Take Two said the game would come out in the fiscal quarter that ends in January of 2004. So, conceivably, Max Payne 2 could also be released in November or December, which would make a lot more sense for them financially, since it puts the game in the running for holiday shoppers.

years of crappy games, followed by a logjam of great games

More precisely IMO, years of a few great games with the occasional year of many or really great games. We saw some really good releases in the past two years (Max Payne, NOLF1/2, MOHAA, WCIII, D2, Mafia, etc.)

"years of crappy games, followed by a logjam of great games"

Maybe, but I doubt all at once. HL 2, D3, MP 2, UT2k4... Even if Valve makes their scheduled release date, what are the odds of all the other companies (Id, Epic, and whoever the heck's doing Max Payne 2) doing the same? Game developers / publishers aren't exactly the most reliable when it comes to meeting schedules...

I would be really surprised to see Doom3 make their release date, whatever that might be. I'm sure with the E3 HL2 footage the guys at Id are probably shitting their pants.

Still, I'll buy both and hope they are both great. In terms of movies, I just see Doom3 as being another Lethal Weapon type movie, whereas Half-Life 2 will be the Pulp Fiction.
