Freelancer Patch

This Freelancer Downloads Page (thanks Frans) offers the first patch for Digital Anvil's space game, updating it to version 1.1. Here's the deal on the 1.6 MB patch:
The Freelancer Update v1.1 is primarily a server update addressing server stability and cheating. There are some client side fixes, the most important being a multiplayer ID generation issue. There is really no need to install the update unless you are running a server or are unable to play multiplayer because you can't get an ID.

The update itself contains no localized text, therefore it is applicable for use for the English, French, and German versions of the game. An English, French, or German readme file will be installed depending on the language version of the target operating system.

Well, overall I think Freelancer would've appealed to mainstream gamers who haven't really played many space sims. The only other space sims I've played include the Wing Commander Series. I hated Independence War 2 because it's story involved a little kool dude and it wasn't worth it to force yourself to play something that on occasion gets so frustratingly hard.

To the person who said Freelancer controls were suitable for a 2 year old...well that's how I like it because I want to be able to sit down and get right into it after only several minutes of learning the controls. By far, this game was most enjoyable to me because of the easy controls. Other space sims have scrappy keyboard setups and in reality I'll never buy a joystick to play because I simply am NOT an enthusiast of using them.

One thing that also made Freelance enjoyable was that it was straightforward and not daunting to the uninitiated. So often, niche or cult genres like Space Simulation seem to turn off new potential fans due to the alarming amount of obscure and often extremely time consuming STUFF they can do. In Freelancer, I could play and not have to worry about it being too difficult to enjoy or perform certain actions that I felt were really BORING! I hate performing one task that takes hours to do. I have other responsibilties and I like to get somewhere fast in games.

The only negative feelings I had about Freelancer was that it's SP storyline was too short and would've like to have seen what happens next. I hope they make an expansion...I'd be right on top of that one.

This was a great game except for the fact it only gave me 30 hours of fun gaming instead of like, 100 hours. Boy was that a big setback.

I followed this game for awhile, then the previews started coming out...I got worried but kept faith.

Then the demo came out and saved me $50.

With that said, as far as X2 goes, it looks great and all but so does freelancer...

FYI http://lancersreactor.com/ has listing of some really neat Freelancer mods that at least for me put some more life into an otherwise boring and repeditive game. Battleship destroying runs, alot more ships... Many of the mods are intending to try to address some of the games initial shortcomings.

The Freelancer Rebalance mod is one I'm currently playing. It's pretty neat.

Because the game is over in a day or 2 at most - max levels, all plots done, best ship and equipment.

I was in a bit of a love / hate relationship with the game. The first four or five hours were fantastic, then I realised just how badly the single player story FORCES you to remain a mediocre schmuck by virtue of the dumbest design decision EVAR (levelling up in a space sim) until you get the Order Fighter.

The story was actually quite surprising to me, and I enjoyed it, even though it could (and should)have been a lot longer. The last mission was cool, (spoiler)

actually fighting inside a Dyson Sphere, even though it was murder on the framerates, was a very refreshing idea.

After I finished single player, I spent approximately twenty more hours exploring, but eventually the incredible repetitiveness of fighting 7 waves of 5 ships of Faction XX just wears you down. This was after I already had the Eagle level 10 fighter, had equipped it with 4 nomad cannons and a level 10 shield, so really, combat had become nothing more exhilirating than a "keep clicking till they're dead" EQ scenario.

This game is just screaming for more content, but I'm afraid it's never going to get it.

Also, a patch release for cheating and server stability, what, SIX MONTHS after the game was released? That's kinda rubbing it in.

And yes, Quboid has it right. The "3000 random missions" are, in fact, just 1 mission. It's sad that a game called privateer, which shipped on SIX FUCKING 3.5 FLOPPIES had more content than Freelancer did.

TewL, what's your server's address, I might pop in at some time?

No me and Dantastic really liked this game when it first came out. We played it straight for a week or two. The cheaters totaly runined the game. They would cheat and get a good ship, with all the hidden weapons and sit in net york and kill newbies. This game was good, when i get bored of everything else ill pick it up again.

but the random missions were the same 3 or 4 missions

You mean the same 1 or 1 missions? Go to x,y,z, kill ships. Even if it's a base destroy, an assassination or whatever, it all boils down to going somewhere and blowing up enemy ships. The only other thing you can do is trade which gets boring.

Cheers,
Quboid

Can I be the only blue's reader who really Likes this game?Granted its not the space sim that Freespace2 or Inependence war2 is. That's because its NOT a space sim. I still find it a heck of alot of fun...especially with friends on multiplayer. I'm hosting a server right now, Exploring space/running drugs/blasting things with my friends....and we're having a great time.

It plays more like a shooter/rpg, Personally, I havn't had this much multiplayer of fun in a spaceship since Allegiance. (I miss that one)

Or, maybe i'm just easily entertained by exploding things :).... thanks for listening.

I forgot to add that almost all of the ships are ugly. almost as bad as privateer 2.

Agreed. I'm waiting for the "Make It Not Suck" patch. But I'm not holding my breath. I think their target audience for the game must have been one-armed, lobotomized, retired truck drivers.

I'll give 'em this, though: they created a nearly perfect graphics engine for generating screenshot hype. They just forgot to attach a game to it.

I bought it too and I regret it. its pretty lame that they wanted that much for a short game like this. singleplayer is through in 1 or 2 days, missions are lame and always the same, the controls are made for a 2 year old, the story is very similar to privateer, the cutscenes are boring and repeating, etc etc etc. the multiplayer part is also boring since its absolutely the same like the single player minus the story. just trading and doing repeating missions doesnt cut it.
IMO its not worth the money it is offered for. maybe half of that. maybe.
I agree that it was fun at the beginning, since it had a little touch of the old (and much better) privateer.
but still there are rumors about an expansion. maybe it will add a singleplayer part that is bigger than the original one, I doubt it tho.

Did it really get such good reviews, though? The ones I recall all placed it around seven or eight (out of ten). It was a fun little romp, but not much else. If you were into multi-player, you did get a bit more enjoyment from it. Still, it was too repetitive and was much less than it should have been, both for what it was and how long it had been worked on.

Looking forward to X2, but expect an equally flawed game,
Ray
