Not only have they made no comments on their product, they won't even respond to posts about their lack of presence at E3. If I'm not mistaken, this is the second year that they have missed.

I don't want to hear another word about DNF until it has shipped. I say keep it secret until then and salvage some dignity from the mess.

No, not the video codec. Before the codec was another self-destructing DVD scheme, also known as Divx.

Remember it? No? My point exactly. The market collectively snorted at it and it withered on the vine.

But vines aren't known for being very bright. Thus, Disney's boldly going forward into 1999. I predict they'll fare about as well as Divx discs did.

"Also what is a fortnight?"

This is one of the differences between American and British English I didn't realise till quite lately, that the term isn't used in the US. Fortnight is short for "fourteen-night" = two weeks (in Shakespeare's day you could also talk of "a seven night" or "se'n-night" to mean a week).

the booth babes. What always strikes me as so funny is that every publisher and developer in the game industry can never stop talking about how "grown up" the game industry has gotten, how it's not just for geek teenagers anymore, adults play games too, we're beating Hollywood yadda yadda yadda, and when the BIGGEST gaming convention in the world takes place, they make damn sure to adhere to every single fucking gaming / gamer stereotype in existence

If the general concensus is that the only thing E3 had to offer was Half Life 2, that's pretty pathetic for the gaming industry. God how I wish some upstart would come along and kick all the big publishers' asses with something awesome and ORIGINAL.

BTW, if you're looking for something revolutionary on Gamecube, check out Pikmin. Very engaging and inventive game.

Similar to the above, what is Nintendo doing? I do not have a Gameboy nor do I ever intend to do so. I would love to have a revolutionary game rather than more games that connect to the GBA.

I'm thinking actually that Nintendo is making more money (at least internationally) from the Gameboy line than from the Cube and its predecessors. Hence the extra attention for that. Notice how anxious they got when Sony announced it was going to enter the handheld field. Nintendo does NOT want Sony in their realm a second time. Sony robbed Nintendo of what, 50+% market share in the consoles, and Nintendo probably fears a repeat in the handheld market.

A fortnight is two weeks. Crazy brits

I have absolutely no problem with women dressing up as game characters, if it's actually done well (for example : www.alisachan.com). Just getting some marginally decent looking women bunched together in tight outfits that have nothing to do with the game they are supposed to be promoting isn't really doing anything for that "We're so mature now" bit.

Re the destructable DVD's. The company who came up with this actually admitted that the DVD's can be copied within those 48 hours, so I really fail to see
A) The point
B) The logic
C) How it will actually make them money somehow.

I'm sure that some genius mid level exec somewhere sees things differently though. Pretty soon we'll have to start shooting our trash into space just to get rid of it...

Do we actually have any way of knowing if these discarded DVDs are really bad or worse for the environment than other normal junk we throw away?

What does that matter? This will be a LOT of added junk on top of the normal junk we throw away. It's very stupid

>That is a ridiculous waste of resources.

You're not kidding! And that's not even considering all the extra (mostly non-renewable) energy needed to transport the product to the store shelves, and then the last mile into the home (probably via monster SUV).

It amazes me that with all the environmental awareness people have today, products so obviously wasteful continue to make their way to market. There ought to be a law.

The section seems to have disappeared for the last several days. What happened?

Frans compiles the list of game reviews, and he's attending E3, so we don't get a game reviews section. Shows how important Frans is to Blue's News still!

As for the booth babes, they know what they're getting into when they apply for a job at a trade show. The whole point of their job is to pose for people and get "rubbed up against by oily geeks". The booth babes just haven't been the same since the Drakkan babe from 3 or 4 years back. She was hot.

Finding very little information on the already-announced titles :(,

Since it's becoming common practice to release the "big" games just in time for the holidays it seems to me that E3 should be held in September or October. The way it is now, we have four or five months to let any excitement and buzz die down before the games actually come out. Plus, the games would be that much further along, making what's shown even more impressive.

-----------------------------------------
Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice?

Offhand, I would guess that Stephen has been busy (a) with is own life, (b) dealing with all the E3 news, or (c) a combination of the two. Additional to this, a number of sites have drastically scaled back their reviews, if not in-depth reporting as a whole, while trying to cover E3. As Stephen only reports news items, he is a bit limited by what the other sites put out on the internet and subsequently inform him of.

Noting that Frans would be equally busy right now,
Ray

Edit: Typos? It's more than that - my fingers are out to kill me!

maybe I'm getting old but the whole booth babe thing is just forced and stupid looking. You can tell they don't want to be there being rubbed up against by oily geeks and a hundred "journos" asking them to strike a pose.

Just like car shows or any other expo that attracts geeks. Gearheads, digitheads, any kind of head. The pictures of this years crop left something to be desired.

Lack of announcements: Seems like there was always a "gee-whiz" announcement from one publisher or another every year but this year was a big snoozer

I think the HL2 announcement and trailers dwarfed all the others so badly the lost signigicance.

DNF: I'm curious to read what Big George and Co. think about Hl2 (GreenMarine, feel free to jump in any time). Matter of fact, I'm curious to read how a lot of FPS developers feel after viewing HL2 and if they feel they'll need to put nose-to-grindstone even more now that it looks like the bar has been raised to a new dizzying height.

Not only have they made no comments on their product, they won't even respond to posts about their lack of presence at E3. If I'm not mistaken, this is the second year that they have missed.

Rays post says it all.

On the other hand, I'm wondering though if it isn't just a case of HL2 stealing it all.

3 games that shouldve gotten more coverage but didn't was:

1.) STALKER. shame on THQ. one screen showing off such a game? At least NVidia treated them well at the GDC a couple months ago.

2.) Breed. where the hell was the Breed love? If that demo doesn't come out next month I'm grabbing a row boat and heading across the pond to see whats taking them so long...

3.) UT2004. When I first heard about it I was....meh, but after hearing about whats going to be included and seeing a very brief shaky-cam flick of Cliffy playing some of the new vehicles I realized that Epic is shooting for giving that feeling of getting more than your moneys worth that the original UT gave. I'm now fully pumped for the new game.....but where the hell was the coverage?

other thoughts.

Booth babes: man, some of these girls were fuhgly. besides, maybe I'm getting old but the whole booth babe thing is just forced and stupid looking. You can tell they don't want to be there being rubbed up against by oily geeks and a hundred "journos" asking them to strike a pose. I enjoyed the pics and movies of the Old "Promised Lot" from a couple years back but things don't look the same since thats been retired.

Lack of announcements: Seems like there was always a "gee-whiz" announcement from one publisher or another every year but this year was a big snoozer. I couldn't watch any of the big three console maker news conference feeds as they just put me to sleep (watch the Nintendo conference if you want to go into a depression quick).
