DOOM III Trailer

Turns out that while the DOOM III E3 trailer on GameSpot (when it hasn't been hammered offline) does require registration, it does not require a paid subscription to view a first-generation copy of the clip that is showing off id's upcoming shooter in L.A. Thanks Shacknews for clearing up the subscription/registration thing. This clip runs two-and-a-quarter minutes, more than twice as long as the clip shown at the MS press conference. Update: The clip is also available on PlanetQuake3.net (thanks Tony!!!).

"Personally I'd love to see a Warhammer 40K mod of it, wonder if it supports terrain...(BIG terrain)"

Not sure, but in the worst case you can always count on something like the CryEngine, currently running "Far Cry". 2k squared terrain, indoor and outdoor etc. I would love to finally see someone do a decent WH40K game for once. Apparently Kuju has the licence now.

Hey I'm with you verybad, I'm gonna get both games and enjoy them differently cause they different games. Too bad for those who simply can't like 2 games cause one of them MUST simply be better, and that makes the other game SUCK totally. It's all black and white obviously.

"Oh, and speaking of "shitty animations," most of the animation in DOOM 3 is motion captured. I hate to break it to you, but it doesn't get better than that. It's the industry standard. "

Um.... no. The humans in the game are motion-captured. How do you motion-capture an alien life-form that doesn't exist, crawls on walls, has spider-legs, floats in the air, etc.? Answer, you don't. You render it on a computer, complete from scratch, but most likely using various real-life models as a basic starting point.

I think that if the Quake 3 net code would work well with D3, they'd probably include it with the product.

DOOM3; crappy 3-4 players DM. The netcode may suck.

Even if they lift the netcode straight out of the Q3 engine it'll still be the best netcode around.

Not a chance in Hell that the netcode could suck.

3-4 Players doesn't sound alot but with those shadows all over the place and the ability to shoot out the lights etc.
The atmosphere hunting down other people and being hunted is gonna be completely new and so much more real.

HL2 trailers are good, the physics engine is really being put to a lot of use in the gameplay demo ( still think shooting the barrels(they always blow up ) would be better then trying to figure out what to shoot to make that iron bar swing ). The girl in the teaser trailer as a nice smile but from a distance the model looks very lo-poly ( either that or she needs to work on her curves a bit ).

Looks like bad animation comments stem from personal bias rather than true oppinion to me. Interesting.

I think HL2 will start out more mod friendly because textures and whatnot are easier to build for the engine, and it will have server/client software.

D3, on the other hand, has an extremely complex texture building paradigm, and it won't have server/client anything. 4 player deathmatch, peer to peer.

Of course, id says they'll release a more agreeable multiplayer component later. But the thing that I'm excited about is the great, stealthy DM style D3 will have. Not since the original DOOM have lights played such a key role in running a map =)

Also, we all know what top expect from HL2. But I don't think anyone has any real ideas about what to expect from D3.

Bad AI? Watch the imp in the movie dodge machine gun fire. Watch the monsters fight eachother. And, watch AI's best friend, scripted events, make every room a treat.

I'm looking forward to both =)

I for one am totally excited about both games. The half life trailer looked absolutely amazing and i'm going to love playing through it. The doom trailer looks even better and those things crawling on the walls and ceilings are really gonna scare the shit outta me! I cant wait! haha. Sure half life is going to be more realistic than doom but really... who thinks that doom is realistic in the first place?

Edit:: Someone mentioned that they think the netcode in doom is going to suck... John Carmack is not capable of making a bad netcode! :-P~

HL2 has much more chance to get mods. For one, it's half-life. And don't forget that mods are usually MP.

Let's see what we know about MP for both games:
DOOM3; crappy 3-4 players DM. The netcode may suck. We haven't heard anything about it in months.
HL2; They said focused on SP, but that there will be something on the MP side.

Overall, we don't know enough ATM to judge wich game should get the most (and the best) mods. As far as I know, HL2 will probably get better mods support out-of-the-box.

But since Quake 4 is the only game scheduled to use the D3 engine, I might be waiting for a while.

Since Raven has been such a good partner with iD for such a long time now, I expect them to be able to announce things before other developers. I'm certain that there are quite a few games, if not already being made, at least planned for development with the D3 engine.

Squirmer: "But since Quake 4 is the only game scheduled to use the D3 engine, I might be waiting for a while."

The Doom III engine has already been licensed by companies besides Raven -- i.e. Human Head Studios:

http://www.humanhead.com/

A quote from the site:

"April 10, 2003
Headhunt Continues for Level Designer
The search continues for a talented Quake3 level designer who has the right stuff to work with us on one of our unannounced projects using the Doom 3 engine."

IIRC there is at least one other looking along similar lines... can't recall which *shrug* Anyway I suspect there is a good game attached to that "ORSOME GRPAHICS!" engine... don't feel too bad if they don't live down to your expectations.

By the way, I agree with Xombie. From everything I've seen, heard and read, Doom 3 will an average game. It will sell brilliantly because of hype and the ORSOME GRPAHCIS! But I won't buy it just for that.

If I want to see the Doom 3 engine in action, I'll wait until a game comes out that uses it -- not iD's 'movie with interactive elements'. But since Quake 4 is the only game scheduled to use the D3 engine, I might be waiting for a while.

I don't agree, verybad. Valve would be crazy to not have unprecedented support for mod makers, so I'm sure the HL2 engine will be awesome in that department. Plus, Valve already has a massive mod makers fan base, with some very professional people.

Doom 3 might have a better renderer but, as far as I can see, Half-Life 2 has it beat in every other department.
