Dungeon Siege II Announced

Microsoft Game Studios sends along news that one of the projects they are showing off at E3 is Dungeon Siege II, being developed by Gas Powered Games, just like the original. Here's the word:
Microsoft Game Studios today announced that Dungeon Siege II, the sequel to the best-selling RPG from Gas Powered Games, is currently in development and is slated for release in 2004. A trailer for Dungeon Siege II will be shown at E3, the annual video game convention taking place in Los Angeles from May 14 through 16. Visitors to the Microsoft booth (South Hall #1246) will be treated to a taste of the vision and direction of this upcoming title. This cinematic feast for the eyes showcases the extraordinary capabilities of the Dungeon Siege II engine, as the entire movie was created in-engine.

"Run to the village and warn the chickens!” said Chris Taylor, president of Gas Powered Games. “At this year’s E3 we are showing the first sneak peek of what we have in store with Dungeon Siege 2. To emphasize the advances we have made in the RPG genre, we created a very special trailer using the actual in-game rendering engine. The future is here and we are all extremely excited to be a part of it with the announcement of the next title in the Dungeon Siege franchise."

The main thing I remeber about DS is fighting the Queen dragon. I got up took a dump, had a cup of tea came back 15 mins later and found that all my characters had killed the dragon with out needing my help.

Dungeon Siege 1, Diablo1, and Diablo2 are... adventure games, calling them RPG's is a joke (hint; Gas Power Games) I am not saying that's a bad thing either, just to clear things up.

I can tell you've never played a PC adventure game before...

Yes I enjoy playing Dungeon Siege's, the Grahpics, and mindless wonder adventuring with some hack and slash, after a long days work is fun, who wants to think?

Then again...
...If you really have time on you hands, then play a real decent RPG game like NeverWinter Nights, the possibilities are endless. I personnally would enjoy to build my own maps for NWN if only I had the time to even to read oops I mean play the game.

Hmm, I think I agree mostly with Ray. I havn't finished the game yet, but I definitely can't say it's "crap" like some others have said. I knew it wasn't a serious RPG and didn't except it to be.

  • I never viewed DS as a "deep" RPG; I viewed it more as a fleshed out Diablo-type game. Although nowhere near as popular, I think DS is a far superior game.

  • I enjoyed DS a lot. Although a bit repetitive, I found it highly addictive. I never played the game for any significant chunk of time, but I played it in little spurts here and there.

  • I love DS's graphics and general look. Ssoooooooooo many games did the old, tired "2D in grids" look, but DS was 3D, had multiple planes, multiple paths, improved lighting effects, etc.

  • I though that DS was great for what it streamlined into the gameplay: interface, pack mules, switching equipment, inventory management, etc.

  • I think that the leveling up process was great in its simplicity. I can enjoy both types of games, but I had played so many of the "deep" stat RPGs that it was nice to actually level up based on what my character atually did versus reaching the magical barriers in the sky, suddenly learning any one magical thing that I chose.

Smirking at the "learned economics" of the DS engine ;),

Sorry m19, the temptation was too great.

edit - Almost forgot... I find it funny that the two previous posters defended the game and put it down at the same time. Classic.

First, a couple thoughts on the original game:
I found Dungeon Siege to be extremely addictive. I suppose the lack of loading screens did contribute a bit to that. There's always the push to go just a little bit farther.

Having said that, the gameplay could be extremely frustrating at times. If you want a half-decent nature mage in your party then you HAVE to take them off on their own every now and then and level them up, just so they can catch up with the rest of the party. Like a previous poster said, magic was pretty much crap until you get to the end of the game - and since experience gain is based on how much damage a particular character is doing (not shared among your party), your mages are pathetic unless you babysit them.

The other lousy part about the game (sorry GPG, it was lousy) was the complete lack of RP in this RPG. Surely there must be some balance between a NWN style game and DS?

A few more pros: you have NOT seen this game until you've played it with some 3D glasses A feast for the eyes. And the sound is amazing.

However, I can't say I'm terribly enthusiastic about Dungeon Siege 2. It's not that I don't think it'll be a fun game - it probably will be, and I'll probably buy it shortly after it comes out. But... Dungeon Siege 2 means that I'm going to have to wait that much longer for Chris Taylor to start working on the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation. The original TA offered some of the best gameplay the RTS world has seen.

I liked Dungeon Siege. I just could understand how people beat the game in 20 hours it took me over a little 50 hours to complete. Dungeon Siege took advantage of Diablo II ideas and made them better. But there this was no story like there was in Diablo plus I really missed those awsome movies that Diablo had, why does every one always have to use the game engine to make the story. Take the time and make great movies like Diablo has done in their games. Also, the thing that was upsetting about Dungeon Siege was that it never felt like I was one of those characters in the game. I really missed being the Barbarian. There needs to be specialized weapons for all characters.

It's not a clickfest when the characters auto-attack. It did suck though, no doubt about that. DiabloII is still 10 times funner.

I bought this game, believing the hype (like a moron)... and quickly returned it the next day. Im sorry, but mindless clickfests are becoming tedious to me. I cant expect the sequel to be any better.

Developers: Please kill the Diablo model!! Let it RIP!! Its a hideous cancer on the RPG genre. And pretty soon, it WILL cease to be profitable.

1 Year later Morrowind has alot of mods for it, NNW has around 2000 modules and countless hak addons and DS has only a handful of maps.
Actually, that's not true, DS has a lot of mods. A quick search turns up the following;

http://www.dsnetguide.com/downloads/modlets.php (nearly 500)
http://www.siegenetwork.com/q?dir=Downloads&req=list&cat=2 (about 150)

I got Dungeon siege hoping for somthing it wasn't. There seemed to be no insentive to level up besides you would die if you didn't. I would have liked to seen some specals for fighters etc like in Diablo 2.

Then I found Neverwinter Nights. I though this game would suck and to begin with I wasn't overly excited with the game. This was until I found out that in multplayer no one needs the map you have built and you can make changes to it anytime you feel. This really opened my eyes at just how cool the network engine can be in this game.

Now I can create a story thats updated ever few days completly changing the map and giving my players somthing intresting to look at.

3 RPG's came out around the same time being Morrowind NWN and DS. 1 Year later Morrowind has alot of mods for it, NNW has around 2000 modules and countless hak addons and DS has only a handful of maps.

I will look at DS but some how thats about all I will do before going back to NWN.

I'll never understand the appeal of this game.

Everyone at the last LAN party I was at played this game for
probably 13-14 hours.

Three out of eight of us got bored a few hours through and
decided to play Armagetron instead. Talk about a fun game
with good graphics and actual skill that ANYONE can play.
Which reminds me...I pWn3d on Tron at the arcade the other
day. ^_^
