The Rise of the Fall of Max Payne

Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (thanks Frans) is the press release officially announcing Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the planned Max Payne sequel that was first revealed almost a year ago (story). The game is planned for release fall of this year for the PC, while console plans will not be revealed until a later date. There aren't really any further details about the project at this time, as they say it "will be unveiled to an extremely select audience by invitation only at this year's E3."

Remember that those are all the result of evolution. For each of these hits, there are literally dozens of flops. Sin 2, anyone?

That's why you see Warcraft III. They've found a thing that works, and know profits from a sequel are much more likely than profits on something new.

(And just because it's based on something that works doesn't mean they still can't goof it up. That bloated government in WCIII must be socialist in the extreme. To have such wasteful spending when you only have a few dozen residents is impressive indeed. Something feels busted in WCIII single player -- they seem to be trying to ape the almost squad-like RTS feel of Sacrifice, and doing so very poorly. WHAT?!?!? They want to build up an army and good defenses before attacking?!? Can't have that! CAN'T HAVE THAT!)

Like evolution, for each one of these hits, there are literally dozens of flops. Sin 2, anyone?

That's why you see Warcraft III, a sham and pale imitation of the almost squad-based RTS action in Sacrifice.

The towns you build in WCIII must be socialist because, damn, the government bloat skyrockets with only a few dozen people. Of course, it's just an incredibly lame infield fly rule to stop people from, you know, having fun the way you're supposed to in RTSs. What?!? People actually trying to build up an army and good defenses before attacking? Can't have that! CAN'T HAVE THAT!

As Dilbert might say, that's the opposite of everything you just got done saying.

I had the misfortune to play this on the PS2. Playing FPS on consoles is like trying to assemble a watch using fireplace irons.

Does PS2 allow you to plug in a mouse and keyboard, and if so, could you configure it to use them (E/Space/S/F for F/B/slide left/slide right, and mousing?)

Totally agreed on the story.

For me, the only dissapointing thing about Max Payne was the gameplay. There simply wasn't much depth to it. The simple combat moves ended up as mere barrels for the whole bullet-time gimick (Like a gun with no scope, silencer, or lasersight ) The linearity of the levels didn't help either.

I hope for the next one they add more moves that utilize the environment or ones that are useful for close combat, such as whatever we'll end up seeing this Wednesday

Overall of course it's still an excellent game. There are few games today that can execute such flawless presentation.

...instead of slowing everyone else down it speeds you up some....might work...
If you speed it up to the same ratio as you would appear to the baddies in Max Payne, it would be like super turbo, and would just be useless

I get so tired of people insulting Max Payne's story, I have to wonder if they even understood it, because there aren't many action games that bothered to anything nearly as good. A man's family is murdered by the failed experiments of a secret pseudo-governmental program after his wife stumbles upon evidence of it's existence. The villain's attempted coverup drives the main character to a path of revenge that ultimately ends in the villain's own downfall, and this is all wonderfully illustrated in some of the most well done, and well narrated cutscenes I've ever seen in a video game. And the plot as a whole was darker and more adult-oriented than games tend to go, which is a gutsy thing to do when games still aren't afforded the 1st amendment protections given to movies. So what game WERE you guys playing, anywway?

without a flux capacitor on the host server or a networking programmer who could invent time travel, I dont think pulling off bullet time properly in multiplayer is possible.

I agree there, the nightmare scenes where you had to figure out that maze was soo idiotic.

I'm really excited. It would be interesting if some genius could come up with the solution to bullet-time multiplayer (other than being irritatingly slowed down whenever one of your opponents wants to). Perhaps they'll take a shot at it.

it was part of the story, if you want to call that a story. they should have just cut the levels in half.

I loved max payne 1, apart from the nightmare scenes..

that one where you had to walk along the trail of blood was so tedious - and the maze was a nightmare.

I don't know why delevelopers add stupid tedious things like that in the game - there's no sense of acheivement - you just want to move on with the story.

anyone who syas max payne was interactive never played deus ex, or duke nukem 3d, for that matter.

ooooo i can turn on a TV, ssooo interactive!!!!!!

People bitch about how this game was so short, its a damn good thing it was. I finished the game thinking Oh god yes, its finally over.
Max payne, for what it was, was a neat thing. I think that with as long as it was in development, it could have been ALOT better but i think the 3D Realms politics kinda fucked that up. Dont want people to be bored with DNF when it comes out so Im sure ALOT was left out. Its also the first game that I sat down and said that many years in dev for THIS?

Thats how the game works, i suppose.

I just hope that they make a real story this time. all the effects, features were great, but the idiotic face, dumb photo scenes and horrible voice acting gave me the creeps...

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Max Payne was absolutely fabulous, and I'm really happy that the sequel will be coming out so soon.

On the other hand, this fall, which will coincide with Deus Ex : IW, Half Life 2, Doom 3 (presumably)... I'm hoping that they aren't rushing things just to try to get it out before the batch of so called "Next Gen" titles hit the street.

Then again, unless it's a total turd, I AM getting it. I played the original seven times in a row, never got tired of it. It had to be the most stylish shooter of it's time.

Go Remedy!

I'm gonna be selling so much blood to buy all this stuff, the Red Cross will be giving me my own damn parking space.

and here i enjoyed the hallucinations.

Same here, except the strange jumping puzzles. What did falling in a pit mean, an OD? I think the hallucinations should have been solely for effect, not challenge. They weren't hard per se, just kinda dumb. I would have rather had some gunplay against dream-like enemies- caricature enemies with four gun-wielding arms, something of that nature. Not Mario64-like platform jumps. Other than that, Max Payne was just about gold. The final skyscraper really had the scale of a skyscraper. I just didn't like the cackling bitch of a bad guy, she spent too much time chiding me over the intercom, when she should have been gettin' on that damn copter!

I'm glad she's dead.
