Half-Life 2 Previews

The NDA referenced earlier has expired, and the first web-based Half-Life 2 previews have begun appearing. There are now previews of Half-Life 2 in (alphabetically): Computer and Video Games, GameSpot, GameSpy, PC.IGN.Com, and Shacknews, . Each article is based on seeing a some proof of concept demonstrations, offering their individual impressions and a shared pool of screenshots, which are also posted here locally. There are also plentiful developer quotes scattered throughout, offering the first details about gameplay in the shooter sequel. Here's a bit from the GameSpot article, as we're impressed by how the NDA seems to have been crafted to fit the big dog's daily publishing schedule. They refute some rumors and shed light on the game's true target platform:
In case you were wondering, the game is also being built, first and foremost, for the PC. Leading up to the official announcement from Valve that Half-Life 2 would be publicly displayed for the first time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 2003, rumors spread far and wide about what the game would and wouldn't be. One of the more popular rumors was that, much like how Bungie Software moved development of its outstanding first-person shooter, Halo, from the PC to the Xbox, so would Valve switch to focusing on console development. Newell laughed this off--no, Half-Life 2 will be a PC game. At first. Newell did confirm that an Xbox version, at least, will follow suit, though there's no hard release date for it yet. At any rate, Newell emphasized that the success of the original Half-Life can be attributed in no small part to the game's huge, worldwide following of PC owners. Valve would have to be downright foolish to abandon its huge installed base when making Half-Life 2.

For years now, all that has been posted is, "Valve Sucks".

Now that they have something, you all do a complete 180 and "Valve Pwns!". I hope that this game is so very different from HL1, that when the mods come out it makes you suck ass at them, because you don't deserve this game. Where were you when Valve was waiting for the right engine to come along & you just disrespected them at every turn like they owe you something.

I hope this game is over-hyped & when you get it, you think it plays like shit & try to take it back. You people disgust me. Your lack of loyalty makes me sick. I hope you all have crummy computers & have to play it 8bit, 640x480, low-res everything. I hate you! Valve hates you too, but they love your money.

Long live ID & Valve & any developer that changes the way we play games and raises the bar ever higher!

The rest of you are just followers. You agree with the popular opinion. Wow, everyone is saying Valve sucks, they must suck. Wow, I played the alpha of Doom3 & it didn't have gameplay & everyone is saying D3 sucks, so I will too. Don't you people have brains? Do you believe EVERYTHING you hear?

Oh & the hype! D3 is going to be a kick ass game. It will be different from HL2, but in ways much better. I never stopped being hyped. I'll never stop. You guys act as if the commercial is over & the next commercial is on. You have the attention span of a teenager living in the year 2003. Oh, wait a minute, that's your problem. You didn't live without cable, vcrs, dvds, cds, computers, microwaves, and gameboy, when people actually talked for hours, read books, played football & frisbee, and actually got tan. You've all had something stolen from you & you don't even know it! Barely any one of you can even think for yourself anymore. It's pathetic.

OICW

Objective Individual Combat Weapon.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m29-oicw.htm

Some grunts love it, some hate it, some say it will revolutionize the way the American Army fights, others say it will lead to a lot of dead people on the battlefield. But one thing's for certain, every shooter now must have one, or risk not being 733T.

And, once again, from the looks of it, developers / publishers are going to be releasing this year's top titles ALL together in the same month. Are they really this stupid, or do they just do it to piss me off?

Guess I better start saving my monthly game allowance from now on until September...

Creston

Edit : And I did like FF : Spirits Within as well, but I think that the direction they took for the film was stupid, almost guaranteeing it was going to fail in the theaters.

Yes, previews often contain the same information, Gog... Afterall they're all previewing the same game (at the same time..)

Anyway I'm not looking forward to "They Hunger" nearly as much as some of the other Single Player mods that will come out for HL 2. There are a lot of excellent (many better than "They Hunger") single player mods out for HL right now, and I can't wait to see what these authors do with the Source engine...

Anyone else notice that the grunts are using OICW's?

They look a little differant, as in, they actually look cool. It took HL2 to make an OICW actually look cool

"Will you quit touching me!"

Aww, you could have easily used a gaming reference for this one--like Warcraft 2's "Why do you keep touching me?!".

Anyway, old Cosby is great.

Old Cosby... you guys really know how to make an old guy feel old. When I was a kid we would drive to the grandparents where it was boring as hell but they did have Cosby's Wonderfulness album. About a month ago I got it on cd and even though I hadn't heard it in well over 25 years I still knew every word by heart.

Great, great stuff.

I swear there are people out there who *want* some of them to suck so they can say "I told you so". It's as if for "your" game to succeed the other must fail... morons.

"WOWOWOWOW can't wait!!!.
doom3? tried, sucks, nothing there but good engine.
now HL2 will defeinitly be something gameplay wise."

Another "informed" opinion... How the h*ll could there be anything there? The game hasn't been released yet... and if you're basing your opinion on a leaked alpha... you're beyong help. Hopefully we are going to have to deal with a batch of good / great games -- Half Life 2, Deus Ex 2, Theif 3 and Doom 3. I swear there are people out there who *want* some of them to suck so they can say "I told you so". It's as if for "your" game to succeed the other must fail... morons.

Well, there was "Will you stop touching me!", which I think was from Bill Cosby's "Himself"?

Bingo, Bango, Bongo!

I would have sworn it was quit.

I fear that my face is beginning to look like Cosby's imitation of his father.
