Half-Life 2 Previews

The NDA referenced earlier has expired, and the first web-based Half-Life 2 previews have begun appearing. There are now previews of Half-Life 2 in (alphabetically): Computer and Video Games, GameSpot, GameSpy, PC.IGN.Com, and Shacknews, . Each article is based on seeing a some proof of concept demonstrations, offering their individual impressions and a shared pool of screenshots, which are also posted here locally. There are also plentiful developer quotes scattered throughout, offering the first details about gameplay in the shooter sequel. Here's a bit from the GameSpot article, as we're impressed by how the NDA seems to have been crafted to fit the big dog's daily publishing schedule. They refute some rumors and shed light on the game's true target platform:
In case you were wondering, the game is also being built, first and foremost, for the PC. Leading up to the official announcement from Valve that Half-Life 2 would be publicly displayed for the first time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 2003, rumors spread far and wide about what the game would and wouldn't be. One of the more popular rumors was that, much like how Bungie Software moved development of its outstanding first-person shooter, Halo, from the PC to the Xbox, so would Valve switch to focusing on console development. Newell laughed this off--no, Half-Life 2 will be a PC game. At first. Newell did confirm that an Xbox version, at least, will follow suit, though there's no hard release date for it yet. At any rate, Newell emphasized that the success of the original Half-Life can be attributed in no small part to the game's huge, worldwide following of PC owners. Valve would have to be downright foolish to abandon its huge installed base when making Half-Life 2.

I think the first game where I really realized how much better a game can look with good texture work would be Kingpin.

I spent alot of time in that game just gawking at the texture work, heh

Yeah, Kingpin ruled in that way, all the dirty brick walls really set the stage, as far as HL goes, I remember first firing up the map editor for HL and being amazed at all the varieties of texture work valve had done, this was coming from q2 editing though so go figure

Yay! The HL2 media blitz begins! This game looks KICK-ASS!

EDIT: Both the cellblock screenie and the "busted" screenie look excellent. They look great and still keep the gritty, sandpapery feel of the original.

BTW, Blue, kudos on the lack of 'watermarking' the screenies with a big ugly logo (like some other sites); I was looking for wallpaper, and these are it.

Actually, this is the approach (stressing polygons less, focusing more on textures, lighting, and effects) that is becoming more and more common. Thief III, Deus Ex 2, Doom III; this is what they are all, more or less, doing.

The emphasis is not so much on the number of polygons that they use, but how they use the polygons that they do have or even how they make so few polygons look like so many. All hail bump mapping and/or pixel shaders!

if i recall correctly, they designed the simple geometry of the levels then after awhile when everything flowed right, they started applying textures, detail etc. When they talk about having started so late, i think they just mean detailing, not actually desiging the levels from the begining.

With that said, HL2 looks really good but actually looking at it, its really the texture work that make it so great looking, not that many polys. Not that this is a bad thing, keeps FPS down a bit. Im glad someone focused on texture work more than poly work for once. I just hope it plays good

Reading the articles i`m a bit concearned that "they can't play the game through." I realise that Valve are keeping the levels under wraps and stuff, but that they only started on them in september last year makes me kind of anxious for a 30th spetember release...

guess we'll just have to wait
