Half-Life 2 Preview

Perhaps a few hours before the NDA on such content has actually expired, there's a Half-Life 2 preview on Gamesradar.com with a summary of the article in the current print issue of PC Gamer UK on the upcoming shooter sequel. The preview includes screenshots and some quotes from Valve about the project, which they say "has been in development ever since the original's release in October 1998." Here's a bit:
The new storyline has been penned by novelist Mark Laidlaw, the scriptwriter for the original Half-Life. Moreover it will span 12 chapters, each estimated at three to four hours each, making it even longer than the original game. The plot picks up an unspecified time after Half-Life and assumes, not unreasonably, that you chose to work for the sinister G-Man in the end, rather than be teleported back to the horrors of alien Xen. So now you're working for the men in black, your research papers left rotting deep within Black Mesa when you discovered your only option, bar certain death, was to become gun-bitch to a suit.
Update: It seems that the NDA Police got wind of this, and this article has now been yoinked.

Be fair. He can only write as much as the technology and the genre allows. HL was intentionally made with no cutscenes.

You don't have to be fair to give the guy (or Valve) credit for that matter.

Remember that many FPS story lines (Waren Spector productions as the exception) are filler created to cover the inside of the CD jewel case nothing more. Half-Life does much more than that.

He's a novelist? You could write Half Life's storyline on a post-it note. I hope he spent a bit more time on the sequel

Further, a writer doesn't simply write 'storyline'. If that's all you wanted, 'story lines', then you would be better off with Choose Your Own Adventure books. A lot of cinematic drama and tension from the game is simply things like the chapter titles, and the dialogue. I'm not saying he's the Shakespeare of FPSs, but god's sake, have some perspective.

> like a couple of hours really make the difference, petty or what ?

Not petty at all. NDA does, after all, stand for "Non-Disclosure Agreement" -- if you sign one you are making a promise that you will abide by the rules in order to get a look at the juicy details. It's a two-way thing -- Valve have kept their end of the bargain by giving out the information, and it's your responsibility to keep your end of the bargain by not talking about it before you're allowed to. If you break it (even if by a couple of hours) you are throwing that agreement in their faces, not to mention saying a big "Screw You!" to everyone else who DID live up to their side of the same bargain.

I imagine that they thought they could get the jump on all the other online publications, and snag extra advertising dollars in the ensuing rush.

I read that HL2 will be using the Half-Life 2 engine, is that true?

from reading the previews in PCZone it seems they simply refer to the engine as 'Source' for HL2 (totally new)

What I meant is that it ain't the graphics that made the game great. HL still blows most of today's games out of the water, and it's graphics are dated.

Bah, I'm still far more excited about HL2 than D3. I couldn't give a rat's ass about whose graphics are better. Give me a good game of Joust over 85% of today's games anyday. It's gameplay that counts in my book.

I think that gamers get too distracted by eye-candy. Let's not forget what made Half-Life such a great game that many of us continue to play to this day. It wasn't the graphics.

Doom 3 could very well be a masterpiece, but it's been a long time since I even thought about Quake.

if HL2 is going to be Sept 30th, I'd put Doom3 around Thanksgiving ?

But they are (going to be) competing engine licencers.

So in that respect they should be prepared. Also, assuming both will make they're targeted deadline of Sept 30th and 'this year' for HL2 and D3, respectively, they won't be far apart.
And it's not that D3 will win hands down, per se. Sure, D3 wins at indoor spaces, with unified lighting, bumpmapping and the works looking a lot better than HL2, but I haven't seen many outdoor areas in D3, and those surely look good in HL2. They don't seem to be part of D3's design doc, but I wonder what the engine would be capable of. It does, for example, support LOD, but whether it supports some sort of landscape engine even remotely like Q3TA, is totally unclear..
