But they are (going to be) competing engine licencers.
So in that respect they should be prepared. Also, assuming both will make they're targeted deadline of Sept 30th and 'this year' for HL2 and D3, respectively, they won't be far apart.
And it's not that D3 will win hands down, per se. Sure, D3 wins at indoor spaces, with unified lighting, bumpmapping and the works looking a lot better than HL2, but I haven't seen many outdoor areas in D3, and those surely look good in HL2. They don't seem to be part of D3's design doc, but I wonder what the engine would be capable of. It does, for example, support LOD, but whether it supports some sort of landscape engine even remotely like Q3TA, is totally unclear..
