Spaceships Ahoy: EVE Online

Simon & Schuster Interactive sends word that EVE Online: The Second Genesis has shipped to retail in North America, and that the game has gone live. Here's the deal:
Simon & Schuster Interactive, the digital entertainment unit of Simon & Schuster Inc. announced today Crowd Control Productions' (CCP), highly anticipated massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) "EVE Online: The Second Genesis" has shipped to retail in North America and will be arriving at retailers over the next several days (Rated "T" by the ESRB; $49.95 estimated street with one month online time included).

This morning EVE became a living, breathing universe as the servers were turned on at 9 AM GMT. Gamers will be settling 'The New Eden' over the next few days as corporations, freelancers and many others begin their journey in this unique, open-ended universe.

Can't they all mine together and then stop to attack if a pirate shows up? Or does it really take that long to quit mining?

Nope, they'll have to be mounting weapons on their ships and carrying ammo in their cargo holds instead of mounting mining lasers. Can't switch weapons without going back to a station. They won't be able to help mine.
