Chaser Demo

A playable demo for Chaser is now available, released through the cover-mount CD from an issue of PC Zone Magazine, and the 146 MB demo of Cauldron's upcoming FPS has been made available by Worthplaying, where the FTP servers are now understandably swamped. Update: Mirrors are now available on 3D Gamers, FileShack (registration required), and Gamer's Hell. Also, JD from Tiscali Games sends along a quick description: "I just finished playing Chaser demo - it contains 1 mission in Little Tokyo, which is divided into 2 levels (Entrance and Underground) and whole demo is ended by cutscene revealing main story."

Engine looked pretty solid from the screenshots I'd seen and the CloakNT demos. I have to say, the game feels really dodgy to play. The physics and movement code for your player really need some work. I found myself stuck against a small brick that was lying on the floor several times.

The bad guys animations were good, and the sound effects were your standard decent stuff, but the engine cheats. It hardly looks as good as any other game engine, it seems flaky and doesn't actually use any new FX or features of gfx cards. Id say I saw some multi texturing but thats about it. The water isn't pixel shaded and the game looks exactly the same on a GF4 MX compared to a GF3 Ti 200, which says something to me. Try running morrowind on a GF4 MX and tell me if it looks half as good in places as a proper next gen GF3+ card.

The AI was not bad, the bad guys didn't appear stupid, but I had some 'running into crates' issues.

Overall though it just felt claustraphobic and enclosed, even in the city streets. The colour palette seemed lacking too, but I haven't seen any other levels yet.

I wouldn't buy it.

Will Rock seemed more fun and had some good FX, sounds and ideas even though it may be cheesy as.

Well, the graphics are awesome, engine smooth, the weapons cool but. The enemies were too accurate, especially while moving. They jump up hit you then jump down all with perfect accuracy. Annoying, not enjoyable. I'm sick and tired of FPS where they do crap like this or infinite re-spawn to extend the life of the game. I find it impossible to have any kind of strategy were you avoid getting hit at all. You will get hit no matter what strat you use, BS IMO And the enemies take too much damage, this is silly. Even when I surprised enemies and pummeled them, they still managed to get off some cheap, perfectly accurate shots, nonsense.

Not getting it. Elite force II I will get and yes maybe even Will Rock (Serious Sam ripoff), maybe

Good engine though, very nice.

Didn't have any problems with the AI. I don't like how high they can jump and how far they can fall, but the AI uses the trick impressively at times.

It is amazing how fast it runs given that it looks pretty great. The metallic effect is overdone on the doors in the tutorial, but looks great on the weapons. There is definitely something odd about the reflections in the water.

The cyborgs are no fun - no ragdoll physics or dismemberment or even gibbing, so their deaths feel about as real as Doom. But! The pistol is fantastic. The noise is loud without being annoying, and the rate of fire is great. Plus it's accurate and does reasonable damage (compared to pistols in most games).

To the guy who didn't hear sounds for a lot of stuff: I think you just have a sound problem - everything you mentioned has a sound effect. That said, the more rapid fire weapons (machinegun and Mac) are curiously quiet for me.

If the enemies and environments were a little more inventive, it could have been really great. As it is, it's interesting and technologically impressive - I'd like to see more engines as efficiently written as this.

Sadly, this demo bored me. If you've ever watched the tech demo of the engine (not the game) you can see all the, frankly, amazing effects it can handle. Oddly the devs toned it down so apart from the water, this game looks a bit same old same old.
Then again I've never been a fan of stealth games and so much prefer the Will Rock demo (complete with bugs galore).
A good day for demos though...

Yeah, I know that.. but my mind hasn't been right lately.

It's kind of interesting to see someone about as old as my dad that plays video games. heh I think I'll be the same way though.. I can't see myself giving it up.

the voice acting is horrific. half of the 'japanese' signs in the supposedly japanese restaurants are just randomly rotated LATIN alphabet characters in a strange font. the 'japanese' chick, as someone noted, does not look or talk japanese, despite the pathetic voice actor's attempt at an accent.

By Old Man Murray's 'Start To Crate' review metric, this game rates -63 seconds. You start out looking at a dozen crates. Some are floating, inexplicably, in clean blue water, all of which is in a dank sewer.

It's funny to see people so excited about the Star Wars Beta. I downloaded the client almost two weeks ago, played twice, haven't turned it on since.

Obviously I can't go into any discourse about why I'm not playing, let's just say I'm waiting for a LITTLE more stability and a LITTLE less lag.
They are working hard on it though, buddy says it improves almost daily.

As for this demo, ehhh, you start in a sewer with crates? The rest of the game could be fucking Deus Ex Virtual Reality for all I care, but that right there has guaranteed that I will never ever spend a penny to get it.
When are developers EVER going to stop using sewers and fucking crates? Are all the level designers out there that incredibly braindead that they simply CANNOT come up with anything new?

Sigh.

Yes this demo has its flaws(fake reflections)But whoever said ninja were dumb I feel was wrong....I was in the underground and walking up on catwalks when I noticed sumthin out of corner of eye it was ninja from street level jumping up on cat walk...but not in my view around corner.....It was same ninja I was just shooting at below me.....well,I waited for him to come around corner and never did.I turn around and another ninja jumped up on catwalk, this time right in front of me....to ny surprise as soon as he jumped up inm front of me mad some unaudible noise, the onw that previously jumped up thjen decided to comearound corner ,thus putting me in the middle of the 2.Wow is all I have to say...If that is any hint in AI for full retail I will buy this game......Best demo I have plated lately..2nd after EF2(whicj I put first for such polish) and by the way BUNKO 3 post is hardly spamming (ya hater)grow up

Will Rock is a little too much for me.. I played the demo on normal and swarms of enemies just kept comming. I like a little massacre every now and then, but that got ridiculous many times. Maybe I'm just getting too old for that type of gameplay. Oh, and what is that weird sound he makes when you jump?

basically its all graphics no gameplay really...sure nice graphics n' pixel shaded water is great but the gameplay really sux in this game...the voice acting sux equally...robot ninjas are awesome though...even though they are about as smart as a flashlight...without a switch...
will rock is way more fun...

Hrm. I don't know why, but I liked this game in the fast, please don't make me think type of way. The jumping on the crates and my tendency to always want to run really made me frustrated with the controls, but out in the open was a lot better for me.

Wanted to add another thing, I love the cyborgs and their almost instant trigger fingers. Having to jump out, take a shot for my memory, then jump back out next time and *bam* *bam* *bam* take out the three that I knew where they were was kind of fun to me.

Also, I don't see the gripe with the engine. Outside of a spotty A.I. (which will surely be fine-tuned) and not drop dead realism, its still nice, pretty and runs great on my system.

I would give the game a try, I'm going to play the demo some more on difficult to see if there is any secrets.

Yeah, nice engine. However, the water reflection is fake ( you see a grate repeating over and over, even if a brick wall should be reflected), the enemies suck, and it's a totally bland sewer full of crates. I'm waiting for Breed.
