The Sims 2 Announced

After 312 add-ons for the original game, EA Announces Plans For The Sims 2 (thanks Frans) is the press release announcing plans for the Sims sequel. Here's a bit on the game, which will allow you to pass on your virtual legacy to your virtual heirs: "More life-like Sims, all-new gameplay, and the ground-breaking addition of genetics, with the DNA of Sims passed down through generations gives players a more vivid, realistic, and in-depth Sims experience. All of this takes place in a new amazingly life-like 3-D world. The Sims 2 will be unveiled to industry insiders on May 13th at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition in Los Angeles and is scheduled to ship in early 2004."

I don't think Maxis has ever made a game where "you accomplish stuff", and I doubt Will Wright will "do more", as you say.

Lots of people like the no goals, just do what you want type of gameplay, and lots of people don't like it. Since Maxis is making a ton of money of their formula, I don't really see them changing it just in the hopes of catering to a different target group.

I played The Sims and actually found it pretty fun until I had all my skills maxed and was always happy and bought every object in the game and everytime I showed up for work I got promoted. And it didn't take very long at all to reach that point, and I'm not a powergamer-type. But I am a gamer, and I do play to accomplish stuff. Oh, also I played a single guy. But I much prefer playing games in which I'm one person rather than controlling a party.

Anyway the formula had potential even for players like me, but Wright needs to do more. Also online Sims could be great, but he moronically set extreme limits on what you could do and what you could look like. That made it no longer a playground.

..just not for me.

I saw everyone from my little sister to my girlfriend get hooked to the Sims (my girlfriends addiction was short lived although she is eerily trying to purchase the Xbox version).

Hell, I heard something from either Nvidia or ATI saying that the first games to achieve photo-realism will be games "like the Sims and game like Everquest" so maybe Maxis will develop a fully 3D, badass living Sim.

Once the first game dies they'll release a version will all the expansion packs just like Half-Life and Rollercoaster Tycoon did.

Yeah, they'll call it:

The Sims - You Must Have Been Living Under A Rock For The Past 2 Years Edition !

Genetics would be cool but... I'm not sure how exactly they could make the game more exciting. The game is fun for about 2 hrs then the gameplay gets stale and I unistall it. Maybe they should allow you to follow your sim to work or something. That would be interesting if you were on the Criminal career track

Well to be honest i did play The Sims, and when u max out your stats the game gets old FAST.

The only chance i will ever pick up a Sims game again is one where they enable you to kill other sims,by violence!

I think the chance of that happening is just about same seeing winter in hell,so i'll pass

"If they want to guarantee that 25 million people will pick up the Sims 2, they will make sure there is an import feature from the original Sims game in it, so you can just transport your houses / sims / neighborhoods etc."

That might prove a tiny bit difficult. Outside of the characters themselves, everything else in the game was 2D, and this will be 3D. It would be the rough equivalent of drawing a picture of a box on a piece of paper, and trying to place the pencil that you used inside the drawing as a means of storage.
Even more difficult since it's unlikely that the characters will have the same statistics and skill sets in Sims 2 as they had available to them in the first one.

get rid of the annoying parts.

That's not going to leave much of a program...

Sorry, I know what was cheap and immature but I had to make at least one pot shot in a Sims thread.

I found the actual game mindnumbingly dull - let's see, go to sleep, rush my morning activities, only just make the car pool to work, come up, do about 80% of the things that need done and go back to sleep.

So is that all you do? You go through a normal life.. except it's all a game? The fact that it sells so good proves that.. well.. I won't say anything because I know there are people here that enjoy it.

Now THAT, I agree with

It was inevitable that they would do this. If they want to guarantee that 25 million people will pick up the Sims 2, they will make sure there is an import feature from the original Sims game in it, so you can just transport your houses / sims / neighborhoods etc.

I'm actually quite interested in it, I played the Sims for a very long time (my wife still plays it every now and then), and I'm curious to see if they will at least improve on the strenghts of the original, and get rid of the annoying parts.

I'm thinking if you bought at least 4 sims expansions, you should get Sims 2 free...

How many expansion packs will Sims 2 have? 10 bucks says 10 packs before Sims 3 is announced.

Then again, can't take the mick out of The Sims too much. It's brought a whole cross-section of people into PC gaming.
