Out of the Blue

I've been watching the woman from the phone company through the window for the last hour... since she knocked my DSL out in investigating phone difficulties. I'd have complained, except she looks like she could break me in two over her knee. Could be worse though... as she drove off, my connection hadn't yet returned, and for a moment there I thought she had busted something.

I can't stop scratching my head over the sight of the president of the United States arriving at his destination of an aircraft carrier via a tail hook landing in a Navy jet. I realize it was favorable weather and I'm sure it was an extremely qualified pilot at the controls during this maneuver, which is conducted hundreds of times each day. It is, however, still the most dangerous landing an aviator can make, and I just can't get over the idea that they were willing to risk a crash landing for the increased impact of making his speech from a carrier...

Since this thread seems to be quite active, is being dubbed a "scandal" here on Blue's, and seems to have taken hold in the media, I was wondering if anyone has coined the term "carriergate" yet.

Hey, we can manufacture oil now out of Turkey guts, so who needs Iraq anymore?

(source: That link in OOTB a week or so ago)

One thing about Iraq, is I can now see why Sadaam ruled with an iron fist! Those Shiites go hog wild over there! I know it's wrong to make fun of another culture and religion, but damn, those rituals of beating the hell out of themselves is funny as anything I've seen, and maybe a bit sad. I understand it's because they have a collective guilt about the death of the Shiite founder (who had to face an army of 4,000 by himself). Maybe they should shoot themselves if they feel that guilty about it.

Every religion has funky rituals, it's just a heck of a lot stranger when you're not a part of it, of course.

You do realize however that we are putting all of Iraq's oil in U.S. trusts to pay for the war. We are totally negating everything that we said stand by...

"The oil belongs to the Iraqi people..." well there goes that statement....

Something to think about

It is not that easy.

Please provide some hard evidence of your statement.

Its always because of the oil...why would he go through all this trouble in Iraq(pissing off many countries) when all he had to do was piss off a few tree huggers and start drilling in Alaska?

Uhm, are you saying that there is as much oil in Alaska than in Iraq? Iraq's 115 billion barrels of proven petroleum reserves are second only to Saudi Arabia's, and that's only the proven amounts of oil in Iraq, which many believe is an underestimate given that no geological survey's have been done in Iraq since the 1970's.(1) So I'm thinking that it's more desirable for any country to have control over Iraq's oil reserves than Alaska's.

Furthermore, the oil argument isn't necessarily about getting more oil for the US, as many have offered theories that the US wants control of Iraq's oil, not only for it's own use, but to prevent the use in other countries. The idea is that the less there is outside of US control, the harder it is on other countries that may be in competition with the US (like say France, Russia, or whoever). It's also been suggested that because there have been instances when Iraq in the past has halted oil exports in a hope to "pressure the UN into concessions in reviews of the sanctions." (2), that the US is seeking control of Iraq oil reserves to eliminate this threat to the US economy (I don't buy this one myself, however)

Thirdly, "a few tree-huggers"? Yeah you're right, environmental disasters as a result of oil production are such a silly thing to worry about.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think that oil wasn't the only big issue driving the US to war with Iraq, I'm just saying that it is definately a perspective worth considering.

Oh and one other thing, I have nothing against the US trying to police the world, I think that it is the ideal country for it since it is the most powerfull country in the world.

I suppose the rest of your post somewhat echoed what I'm about to say, but just wanted to play devil's advocate.

The problem with having only 1 nation as the "world's police" is that said country will only police in situations where it serves it's own interests. So if it's in the US's best interests (whether they be economic, security-related, or whatever) to "police" some nation, then they'd do so, but if it's not in their best interests they won't. You might want to say that "well, what's wrong with that?" The thing is though that let's say the US is strongly involved with foreign trade with a nation. Then that nation that the US trades with goes out and decides that you know what, human rights and free speech aren't important, and as a result of this viewpoint decides to kill on sight anyone who offers dissenting political opinion from the current government. Obviously this is a point when the world's "police" should step in, but because it wouldn't be in the US's best interest to do so (hey, they help our economy a whole lot after all), they probably wouldn't.

This is a pretty extreme oversimplification, but the point is still the same, that point being that the "world police" has to be sensitive to the needs of the world as a whole, and not just the "biggest", "most powerful", "most rich", or "most morally justified" segment of it.

If you look at the US political system, you will find that it isnt really a democracy in the traditional sense. Its basicaly a corporate dictatorship.

Funny thing is...this is a Republic.

Bush promises oil companies "mucho" Arab oil in the future.

Its always because of the oil...why would he go through all this trouble in Iraq(pissing off many countries) when all he had to do was piss off a few tree huggers and start drilling in Alaska?

Bush invents weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Tell that to the many Iraqus that were gassed over the years.

So no I don't see your point

Oh and one other thing, I have nothing against the US trying to police the world, I think that it is the ideal country for it since it is the most powerfull country in the world. What bothers me is that its more like a corrupt cop on the beat rather than an honest one. It "protects" only the countries that can provide "protection money" (as in Iraqi oil), and even though thats a good thing for the Iraqi people, I guess the countless African countries are going to have to overthrow their blood-sucking dictators bye themselves.

The whole "I hate Bush" or "I love Bush" is rather pointless, to me anyway. The real problem is the system.
If you look at the US political system, you will find that it isnt really a democracy in the traditional sense. Its basicaly a corporate dictatorship.
I mean you have 2 parties which dont really differ from each other in any meaningfull way. Then you have a nation who votes not out of political or social reasons, they vote for whovever has the better PR, so the person who spends the most money on his/hers campaing wins. This person can be anyone as long as they are willing to go the corporate way.
This is basically how it goes:
Bush wants to become president.
Bush promises oil companies "mucho" Arab oil in the future.
Oil companies provide lots of money for campaing.
Bush nearly loses, but with more "corporate" money buys himself a few more thousand votes in florida.
Bush gets elected president.
September 11th.
Bush's ratings go sky high. (Lucky for him eh?)
Bush invents weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Bush invades and conquers Iraq. (Ooops no weapons found)
Get ready to Pump that Oil!!!

See my point?
