Halfway through Hudson the wonder dog's two week treatment for her
conjunctivitis and it's gotten almost impossible to administer her eye drops...
Sometimes you see an old cartoon or movie that references carnival acts where a
prize was available for anyone who could stay in the ring with the house bruiser
for a short amount of time... I'm convinced I have the potential for something
similar here... put a drop in the Airedale's eye in under a minute and win a
prize. But be warned, it's a sucker bet, as trying to hold the 50 lb beastie
down for this is an effort somewhat akin to alligator wrestling.

"Airedale's eye in under a minute and win a prize"
I can do my shepard-mix's eyes in 30 seconds. It's all in the set up. First, have the dog sit. I usually stand over the dog from behind, and using my left hand to hold his head up from under the mouth. For the first few times, don't do the drops: just hold him there for a minute or so, then reward him with a treat. The idea is to get him to stay still, sitting and comfortable.
Then, when he's complied a few times, use the eyedropper, but don't actually do the drops yet. Just get him used to the idea of something getting close to his eyes. Reward him.
Finally, do the deed. He knows that if he stays still, he'll get a reward, but the first few times, he's not going to like it at all. But food is a good motivator. Just takes a little patience.
