On Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 coming this fall on CNN Money is an article examining the prospects of Valve's recently revealed shooter sequel. The article, which says the game is due on shelves September 30, offers a bit of history on the franchise, some quotes from Valve, and the first non-scanned screenshots of the game. The article discusses the value mod support has added to the original Half-Life, something this quote from Valve's Gabe Newell indicates they plan on continuing:
"We've learned a lot from our experiences with the mod community and with Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Half-Life 2 will be a much better platform for mod authors than Half-Life 1."

anyone else only care about the multiplay in HL2 ?

when will we hear some info about that? Yea HL single player was good/great , but we all still play because of the multiplay.

Off-Topic: Laurence Fishburne acts the way his lines force him to act. He can't deliver those lines without pretending to be someone of vast intelligence (even though the "discussions" in the matrix movies are usually ones of circular logic or just plain.. stupidity)...

On-Topic: There hasn't been a single player FPS as significant as HL since it was released. Deus Ex and SS 2 were both amazing, but their lack of community make them less a cornerstone of the fps market than HL...

It's funny reading all these threads and the number of people who have connected 3DRealms and over-hyping. I have never heard/read any example of overhyping by 3DRealms re: Duke Nukem Forever. In fact they have said almost nothing about the game.

Their only crime has been to announce it early and then release a trailer.
I suppose you're referring to the E3 trailer of 1998, but you're leaving out a few other releases there: early screenshots in 1997/98, a big preview in PC Gamer late 1999 (of which the screenshots were also released online), and then (most notably) a new movie trailer at E3 2001: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/duke4ever/

I'm not saying 3D Realms over-hyped DNF, certainly not after 2001, but they talked about it in the first few years of the game's development and released early media, and that's what people remember.

I guess they simply were a late adopter of the Valve principle.

It might be correct to refer to it as vapourware, but what else are they currently working on? The game will rock when it IS released.

If the content is half as good as in Duke3D then when it does finally go gold we will all quickly forget how great
HalfLife was and how good I hope HalfLife 2 will be.

I personally think that HalfLife was a great game but is now the most overhyped game I have played. Why do people still try to compare current games with a 5-year old game like HalfLife? The level of enjoyment relates directly to contemporary games and their content, so comparing in current titles with HalfLife, you might as well be comparing HalfLife and Doom X. (As post-hyped as HalfLife is it is not nearly as overhyped as those silly Matrix movies. Most of the dialogue in those movies is gobble-de-gook, bullshit, pseudo-intellectual drivel, especially all of Laurence Fishburne's lines. My God, does he really think he is that intelligent?? He's been playing the same wise-ass role since "Boys In the Hood" for Godsake.)

Half Life was a great game for it's time, but try to deny that it isn't very dated when you play it now. If HalfLife 2 is more of the same, but with better graphics, I will be bitterly disappointed, but will still buy, play and probably still really enjoy it.

It is going to be a good year for games, me-thinks.

Bring on Doom3, Quake4, DNF... but first give me HalfLife 2!!!

I could see Shep (yeah, I don't know hot to spell the rest) coming back in to make, at the very least, a cameo. And you were straight up right on your first two inquiries.

Personnaly the story doesn't interest me as much as the individual action sequences and puzzles. Thats where Half-Life really shined, IMHO.

Yep, Barney is the security guard you control in Blue Shift and can be easily spotted in Half-Life throughout the game. There's also another security guard named "Otis", who can be spotted in Blue Shift.

I don't know if Valve will ever think about putting those guys(Otis & Sheppard) back in HL2 as cameo appearances or possibly in a future expansion pack(i.e. Opposite Force 2 & Blue Shift 2) It would be neat though to see their face being lifted in the Half-Life 2 engine(aka "Source Engine") like they did with G-Man(so life like! He's one creepy guy) and Barney.

G-Man : you're right
Barney : I think you're right, I never played Blueshift either, but he was every security guard in the original Half-Life.
Adrian Sheppard : It's possible. Would be cool, older grunt, now general or something.
