EVE Online Gold

Simon & Schuster Interactive sends news that EVE Online: The Second Genesis, their MMO space game, has gone gold. They say the NDA on information about the game has been officially dropped as of today, and the official launch is slated for May 6 (sorry for messing up the date at first). They also send along a batch of five new screenshots, and word that the game's producer, Mike "Campion" Wallis will be in the EVE Online IRC Channel today at 5:00 PM EDT to discuss the announcement. The chat will be conducted on the server stratics.frws.com in the channel #eve-online.

most of the posts were better than yours, a lot of them didnt resort to insults and snobbishness as yours did. Because you like the game and others don't does not make them stupid.

I tried EVE and for four times in a row couldnt get past character creation, then i finally made it and got stuck on the tutorial.... eventually i made it to open space only to find tht the only viable option afte being left in the lurch with no solid directions on what i should look into next other than mining called it a day and un-installled EVE.... i was hoping for elite / homeworld in space i was wrong. but maybe you like what it isnt.

Wow.. really intelligent commentary here people.

From the stupid (human) to the mundane (everyone else)..once again reading these boards is a waste of time.

Eve is a really good game... I'm sorry that stupid people cannot get into it. Perhaps Counterstrike would be better for you? Oh wait.. that requires thought also.

I'm going back to playing the beta (now on my 12th hour straight of playing).

From the reports, this game seems right now to be a souped up space-themed screensaver. oooh, pretty.

I have enjoyed playing the Eve beta, and look forward to spending a fraction of my limited free time playing it as a retail product, as well.

3,000 for six months? I expect it's more a case of a few hundred for a week. Looking at the amount of beta testers who've pre-ordered and are sinking their lives into this game fills me with hope.

By the time the noobs have figured out how the hell to use the autopilot the game world should be rocking. I hope

good point Ajax, one which I should have tried to point out in my post. I do see the potential for great things, but its also something that I would rather let 3,000 OTHER people work at for 6 months, then if its fun, I'd be happy to jump in.

Sorry to be redundant, but that seems like a clear hint that its too early, now that I read it.

The rewards aspect of the game is heavily dependent on an active market, and a lot of players. After a pwipe, it sucks playing for a few days while everyone's rushing off to find Ark. But once corporations get big and confident enough to stake a claim on warp gates, etc. That's when things get interesting.

Eve is pretty much a blank slate in terms of gaming experience. The fun of it is going to be defined by the people that play it.

The problem isn't that EVE is so open, the problem is that they haven't figured out how to make that openness work as a game yet. Right now the game is all about mining. NPC missions don't really work. Trading is not worth the time it takes to do it unless you find a bug in the market that will make you billions in a few hours (which seems to happen much too often). Bounty hunting and piracy generally won't pay the bills either unless you get really lucky. There's no way to find a particular player in order to kill him and collect the bounty. EVE still needs a LOT of work if its going to live up to its potential. I just think it's wrong of them to release it to paying customers at this point. They should at least finish balancing it and get the features working properly before release.

Hmm... I don't see myself as a museum piece. I really like what I see in Eve and I don't think most people will feel jipped since they keep adding things to do.

I've only been in the beta a short time and have already pre-ordered the game. I think because Eve is so open-ended it might confuse some people. But hey to each their own.

Just to add from another phase 7 tester here, I agree with some of the other posters.

I think, from the striclty bug issue side of things, I would be slightly worried, but to be honest, all MMORPG's are going to be released in this state and take about 6 months to become close to the "final product" as they are gonna get. You can argue that it will never be too soon to release the product, or never too late to release it. I think in this case it leans on the "too early" side based on my experience with the game.

However, all of those major bugs will eventually be solved and my concern would be whether there is a FUN game to play after that. I didnt have any fun with the beta so far, and that is ignoring the frequent bugs and just looking at what you actually get to do in a few weeks of constant playing.

The actual core gameplay just is not fun to me. It is time consuming [a given], monotonous, and [the killer] unrewarding after you put in that time and effort. For what, buy a bigger ship? Purchase a "skill" you need just to use a "weapon" that you didnt have the skill to use in the first place?

Things will always get better in the long run, corporations, group activities, large player cruisers and epic battles etc. But I think honestly its almost like paying entry into a museum only to be told "guess what, YOU are the exhibits! isnt that neato!?" ....to some it might be, but to others, they will be left feeling a little jipped.

Yeah, they fix the bugs, but each patch adds several new bugs too. CCP is the one that will bring balance to the Force.

I just got into the beta over the weekend and Eve is a lot of fun.. game is like Elite on steroids. Friends who have been in the beta for a long time said CCP has been good about fixing the bugs.. but I guess I'll see for myself.

Space travel=boring. Same thing above. You click then wait. you cant set auto courses, you have to manually jump to each solar system.

To be fair, they did implement auto-warp and auto-jump. So you can select a destination and then just kinda keep one eye on the puter while you're traveling. But they still have a long way to go towards making the game truly fun.

I agree. The fact that the game will change is not a valid point. The basic gameplay elements are in, and they are staying. Only added features and content will follow, that isn't enough to make the game un boring.
Mining= boring (takes too long, NO INTERACTION) I mean who wants to go turn on the tv and watch a computer model shoot a laser into a rock for 20 minutes????
Space travel=boring. Same thing above. You click then wait. you cant set auto courses, you have to manually jump to each solar system. The game requires no attention from the user until a certain action is desired. flaw in game design.
The game also fails to hold up to the basic gameplay design basics that common sense teaches.
Of course this is all my opinion. But my guess, it will be a small mmorpg, like neocron with less than a few thousand people playing it a day.

Eve is probably the most boring game i've ever played, ever, its more boring than the occasional SWF game i'll play or even Postal 2 and Unreal 2. Maby I "just dont get it" but walking to the store to buy milk would be more entertaining that spending the equal amount of time playing Eve. (no not a p2 reference just an example of a mundane action being more fun than a product designed to give entertainment)

I'd like to point out that Shadowbane was incredibly laggy in beta and once they released and turned off all the server side logging, the lag was virtually gone. GONE!
This ain't shadowbane, although to read the beta forums, a lot of people want them to turn it into shadowbane in space.

Some gamers are so stupid and think that just because the game client has gone gold, NOBODY IS WORKING ON IT!

Wrong, pink-o.
I'm sure they're still working on it. But they are just about out of time and there's still a ton of stuff to do. Even in the chat he admitted that quite a few things would not be ready at launch. That means that those things haven't been beta tested yet. Guess who gets to beta test them? Yep, all those paying customers.

So sayeth me! So it shall be. (Dumbass)

Campion already said in the recent dev chat to clear this issue up that the team is still there working 16 hour days. It doesn't matter that the client is gold, because the game receives constant patches.

Everything is in and is being tested.. but you wouldn't know that since the last time you played the beta was months ago.

Wrong, moron. I think you have me confused with someone else. I've been playing the beta for the last couple months. I know what's going on with it. It's got less than 2 weeks of beta time left, and the buggy client is already gold. The game will get so-so reviews at best when it comes out. The high points will be for the graphics and the great potential of the game. The low points will be for the buggy-ness, incomplete features, unbalanced market, unbalanced ships, lag, lag, and more lag. Oh yeah, and the fact that it just isn't all that much fun right now. The game will have a fanboi following that will pay to continue testing for the next several months. At some point the game will either become what it should have been before they decided to release it, or it will continue to have a few thousand subscribers and slowly fade away into obscurity. So sayeth me. So shall it be.
