Who said I was still playing Ur-Quan? And if by hooked, you mean waiting for a playable build...well...then maybe you're right. Heck, I know a lot of folks who couldn't even get the client to work from Beta 2-4. CCP had to twist arms to get more than 1,000 on the servers during 5 too.
And no, I can't say that EVE has better code than WW2OL's...just watch the boards and reviews when it is released and I bet you'll see a lot of them saying: "it's a good start, but I would wait until they implement more or patch." By a simple comparison of features advertised versus features implemented, they're very comparable. I liked WW2OL when it came out...it was novel, it looked good...some of it worked...just like EVE. EVE has a lot of potential, but it is unrealized and it will continue to be unrealized. I don't think you realize how much of the game is to be implemented. And for every major advance in the implementation of code they made, they took a couple steps back. For example: they added content, and lost the chat interface. The only thing that made mining tolerable was being able to talk to folks. This was acceptable in a Beta...it's not when you are paying for it.
I have a sneaking suspicion that CCP expected the game sooner, and is unwilling to extend the dev cycle. It's a mistake...there are plenty examples in the market of such mistakes: WW2OL is THE biggest one...that may change soon.
As for patches. You cannot expect to get a decent product from a manufacturer if you accept the fact that it needs to be patched coming out of the box. Most folks, fanbois included, need to start holding these folks to a higher standard. If not you end up with crap like MOO3. Once again, the travisty is not that folks like you who know what they are getting when they plop down their $13 a month (+game)...it's everyone else out there who just entered the paid beta test but didn't expect to.
