BF1942 Battle Plan - No Client Mods

The Battlefield 1942 Website has details on what's to be included in the upcoming version 1.4 patch for DICE's World War II shooter. The update includes word that client-side mods are to be disabled in the future as part of their effort at eradicating cheating and exploits:
A note on cheating and exploits -- we've all seen how cheating can destroy the gameplay experience for everyone. EA and DICE take cheating seriously and we are taking an aggressive stance in preventing exploits which allow people to cheat. The biggest source of all BF cheats and exploits are client-side modifications. With the release of patch 1.4, we are disabling all client-side mods. Unfortunately, this means that the client side mods that aren't used for cheating will also be affected. DICE and EA have spent the past few months trying to engineer a solution which allows client-side mods to work while stopping the cheats. Ultimately it proved impossible to do so in such a way that prevented future client side mods from opening up new methods of cheating and exploitation. However, this doesn't mean that all mods are unusable. By making the mods into full server-side mods (Desert Combat for example), everyone can experience the cool factor that these mods offer.

Merciless is the only one I can think of. It's a very handy mod that adds things like more informative loading screens and a choice of crosshairs, among many others. I've be disappointed if this means the end of this..

There's also info on the 1.4 patch which doesn't have a release date yet:

Fixes and Features in 1.4 include:
  • Tank Repair exploit - tanks will no longer be able to repair in the airplane hanger.
  • Improved voting GUI - the voting interface has been improved.
  • Cheats - we will be implementing features which address many of the cheats currently being seen in BF1942 games.
  • Linux Server.
  • Two new guns being added: The DP 1928 - Japanese Assault rifle and the Type 99 - Russian Assault rifle.

I love this game.

Edit: missed a bullet... whoops

I'm actually more curious as to when they'll figure out that engineers and medics need to score points for repairing/healing. noone plays as a medic. NOONE. if they gained points for healing teammates (and therefore had a shot at the high score table), people might actually play as a medic.

this was figured out long, long ago in TFC. why it wasn't a no-brainer for 1942 is beyond me.

I agree. I play as a medic most of the time and I end up with a low score and no thank yous from anyone either.

Try writing BFHQ@ea.com and nicely ask for that. I am going to do that right now. It takes some time for them to get back to you though. I submitted a multiplayer trainer to them and they got back to me after probably a month+.

yeah, the medic and engineer definitely need to earn points for their main function. they are both useful classes but this is a game with a prominent leaderboard, and nobody wants to be doing useful things but be sitting at the bottom.

it would also be nice to have some maps with more complex bases that are a bit harder to capture then just raising your flag when there's no opponents in proximity. the game is my favorite multiplayer right now, but it I do wish I had more room for strategy then just FPS'ing.

Please correct me if I'm wrong... But your scores aren't saved after you play a game, are they?

If they are not, then what does it matter what your score is? You're playing several games in a sitting, and your score is going to be different in each game, but it's wiped away when you begin the next game....

The update includes word that client-side chats are to be disabled

I panicked when I read that client-side "chats" were going to be disabled. How can they remove the simple need to communicate with your teammates and enemies? Then I realized it was only a spelling error.

Desert Combat uses new models and textures for the planes and weapons, how can it not be a client side mod? My understanding is that a server side mod is, among other things, something that doesn't require any changes on the client side. But since DC and other mods play offline, and my computer needs to be able to display things that don't come with the original game......again, how is this possible? If they're suggesting DC can become some rediculous game with WW2 planes moving at 10 times the speed, and still be great, then EA can EAt me. I'd sooner believe that they've just decided to take a position against modding their games. It wouldn't be a huge surprise for a company like EA to decide free mods chip away at their gains on expansion packs.

....why wouldn't they look into Punkbusters or something first if this was their real concern? Imagine how many fewer sales Half-Life would've made without Counterstrike's massive popularity. EA is about to shoot themselves in the foot.

actually the three top scorers get a gold, silver, and bronze medal, and your accumulated medals are visible next to your name for as long as you play on that server. plus it adds to the fun imo to get points when you are doing something that is helpful to the team

Argh!! Dice needs to find another way to fix the cheats. I can't go back to boring BF1942 graphics. Also, its blood patch rocks.

Hn? CS obviously qualifies as a full server-side mod as mentioned in the developer's update, so it would still work. I don't see any problem with this at all. Some people will miss their client side mods, of course, but if it's a serious hindrance for cheating, then it's well worth the trouble.

Of course, I am pretty sure it will take cheaters just about 12 seconds to find another way to ruin the game for everyone else.

When you download CS.......you are downloading the CS client...........client side mod. Your computer needs the new weapons and player skins, so that your video card can display them...

Let me try to explain this clearly.... Apr 19, 2003, 16:25

...for anyone who doesn't understand. If a mod is fully server side, you don't need to download ANYTHING. But that means heavy restrictions on what the mod can do. To have any new player models, weapons, vehicles, maps, wall/terrain textures, player skins, or sounds that didn't come on the game CD, you must download them. Your computer can't play sounds, or display graphics, that are not on your computer. Your computer is the client, the 32 player game you join is the server. Technology isn't readily available that would allow you to download and install the entire mod in the small amount of time it would take to join a server for that mod. So if EA is suggesting that DC be moved to the server side, what they are suggesting is that the DC team only use WW2 planes, weapons, map, soldiers, and sounds, to portray their vision of a modern warfare total conversion. So now I hope you understand the controversy.

Here's a less confusing explanation from the DC team:

http://forums.bf42.com/showthread.php?s=6f6b0dd5c22c1089b32892b22a3ada3a&threadid=24400

The release sounded pretty clear actually, saying they wanted to eliminate the troubelsome client side. What they meant was mods would have to release identical files to the server, and let checks be made to insure only identical files existed on the client (like punkbuster). This is my interpretation, anyway.

I think you were the only one that was confused about this.

And as for merciless... did anyone else find this mod annoying? I just downloaded it for the blood and the real flags and then it made my crosshair weird and removed it all together for the pistol. There were other things I didn't like but it was oh so long ago.... so long ago :'(
