BF1942 Battle Plan - No Client Mods

The Battlefield 1942 Website has details on what's to be included in the upcoming version 1.4 patch for DICE's World War II shooter. The update includes word that client-side mods are to be disabled in the future as part of their effort at eradicating cheating and exploits:
A note on cheating and exploits -- we've all seen how cheating can destroy the gameplay experience for everyone. EA and DICE take cheating seriously and we are taking an aggressive stance in preventing exploits which allow people to cheat. The biggest source of all BF cheats and exploits are client-side modifications. With the release of patch 1.4, we are disabling all client-side mods. Unfortunately, this means that the client side mods that aren't used for cheating will also be affected. DICE and EA have spent the past few months trying to engineer a solution which allows client-side mods to work while stopping the cheats. Ultimately it proved impossible to do so in such a way that prevented future client side mods from opening up new methods of cheating and exploitation. However, this doesn't mean that all mods are unusable. By making the mods into full server-side mods (Desert Combat for example), everyone can experience the cool factor that these mods offer.

the most common hack is fluro skins. skin hack packs require you to have on "merciless mod"; a legit mod.

should also stop 'casual' cheaters that use 'winter camo' skins.

If what that guy replied with in the forum you linked to is true the petition will mean nothing to EA and Dice and is a really stupid idea.

There's an online petition to incorporate mod secure RFA's into Battlefield 1942 1.4:

Maybe this will save Merciless Creations mod.

this makes perfect sense. look at it as a "pure" server, like in quake 3 arena. i was confused also, but once i saw that DC post that someone else posted earlier in this thread, the pure server option on quake 3 arena came to mind instantly.

I forgot to reinstall my bloodpatch after the last bf patch because I'm too lazy and it doesn't really even bother me. I usually use the changing crosshair to see that I hit someone. Most of the time my targets are too far away to see the blood if I hit them anyways.

Maybe DICE can release a parental mode with blood setting that can be downloaded for free by giving a credit card number to prove you are an adult like Activision does. I doubt that will ever happen though

P.S. Go Flyers YAAAAY!

I didn't understand it myself until I went to the BF'42 forums and found out what it meant exactly. Mods are fine, people can still make mods, its using files that arent part of the specific build ie; blood patch, skins etc.

Kinda like those Counter-Strike packs that change the looks, sounds of the weapons, textures, etc. while still being able to play on a standard server. Seems like a small price to pay for having a *clean* game.

I will definitely miss the blood patch though, it really helps to see if your hitting your target.

And I already pointed out the DC teams correction of the release (cause that's what it is, a correction). This is only about creating server-side checks to make sure everyone who joins has the mod's files (a.k.a. the client files) and only the mod files.

Condescending? That post wasn't even directed solely at you. It just seemed obvious that people here either didn't know there was anything to be confused about, or knew something I didn't. That's why I asked in "I don't understand how this is possible." It was you who stated it was completely obvious CS is a fully server side mod, and that's all I've been arguing about. I'm sorry if this is going to sound condescending, but it is IDIOTIC that I even have to argue with anyone about this. Neither DC nor CS is fully server side, any possibility of this is completely negated by the fact that you must DOWNLOAD THEM. And YES, the release is completely confusing, because stating that they should BECOME fully server-side is suggesting that DC elimate any new graphics/sounds! Jesus christ!

I totally appreciate your condescending attitude, but I'm afraid it's you who doesn't understand. Of course, it's understandable since the update wasn't crystal clear.

According to EA's definition Desert Combat is not a client-side mod, DC is already, in its current state a "full server-side mod".

This is a bit of a weird nomenclature, I'd call DC a client/server mod, which are okay with the new patch. The patch only affects pure client mods, that is mods that are not mirrored on the server side. So custom skins, blood patches will be rendered impossible.
That's exactly what I thought when reading the news message, but Sarcasmo seemed so sure I searched around the BF1942 forums, and found a thread confirming this:
http://forums.bf42.com/showthread.php?threadid=24398
The thread includes posts by Desert Combat team members who have spoken to the developers.

Edit: Well it turns out I took so long to research and write my post that Sarcasmo found his own error. Apologies.

I think you were the only one that was confused about this.

And as for merciless... did anyone else find this mod annoying? I just downloaded it for the blood and the real flags and then it made my crosshair weird and removed it all together for the pistol. There were other things I didn't like but it was oh so long ago.... so long ago :'(

Here's a less confusing explanation from the DC team:

http://forums.bf42.com/showthread.php?s=6f6b0dd5c22c1089b32892b22a3ada3a&threadid=24400

The release sounded pretty clear actually, saying they wanted to eliminate the troubelsome client side. What they meant was mods would have to release identical files to the server, and let checks be made to insure only identical files existed on the client (like punkbuster). This is my interpretation, anyway.

...for anyone who doesn't understand. If a mod is fully server side, you don't need to download ANYTHING. But that means heavy restrictions on what the mod can do. To have any new player models, weapons, vehicles, maps, wall/terrain textures, player skins, or sounds that didn't come on the game CD, you must download them. Your computer can't play sounds, or display graphics, that are not on your computer. Your computer is the client, the 32 player game you join is the server. Technology isn't readily available that would allow you to download and install the entire mod in the small amount of time it would take to join a server for that mod. So if EA is suggesting that DC be moved to the server side, what they are suggesting is that the DC team only use WW2 planes, weapons, map, soldiers, and sounds, to portray their vision of a modern warfare total conversion. So now I hope you understand the controversy.

When you download CS.......you are downloading the CS client...........client side mod. Your computer needs the new weapons and player skins, so that your video card can display them...

....why wouldn't they look into Punkbusters or something first if this was their real concern? Imagine how many fewer sales Half-Life would've made without Counterstrike's massive popularity. EA is about to shoot themselves in the foot.
Hn? CS obviously qualifies as a full server-side mod as mentioned in the developer's update, so it would still work. I don't see any problem with this at all. Some people will miss their client side mods, of course, but if it's a serious hindrance for cheating, then it's well worth the trouble.

Of course, I am pretty sure it will take cheaters just about 12 seconds to find another way to ruin the game for everyone else.

Argh!! Dice needs to find another way to fix the cheats. I can't go back to boring BF1942 graphics. Also, its blood patch rocks.
