Preparing for DOOM

Prepare to Meet Thy Doom on Wired (thanks John W. Simms) is a preview of DOOM III offering a bit of the history of id Software, the concept behind the game, and a look at what to expect. The article also offers this fall as a projected release date for the project, and provides some quotes from the folks at id, including speculation from John Carmack that technological advances may soon be rendering him obsolete:
"There's a real chance that the next-generation rendering engine will be a stable, mature technology that lasts in more or less its basic form for a long time," he says. "Programmers will move from being engine coders to being technical directors in the Pixar style."

Cool - hadn't been watching Soldner. I kinda stick with the FPS stuff. A fully fledged Geo-mod engine will be a major step forward imo. Props to developers who work on this stuff rather than pick up an exisitng engine and for all intents and purposes just modify it.

A next generation Geo-mod engine would rock - just think of doing multiplayer where you can crush people in buildings by taking out supporting walls with a rocket launcher.

There is a game being developed where you can do just that! It is called "Söldner: Secret Wars" There is info on blues if you type that into the search.

I wish he had actually researched the topic before he wrote the article. The same author also reviewed Quake 3 and made numerous mistakes, all due to lack of research, but I can't find the review.

Oh my goodness, that's pretty brutal, in the story talking about how Q3 was going to have "a departure from out-and-out killing, with a more developed storyline and some adventure game elements" and how "The influential John Romero of id Software is driving the project". Talk about poor journalism.

I've played RPGs since 1975 in about every style possible. Personally I prefer things mixed -- too much of any one thing gets old. People who make those "roll playing" vs. "role playing" comments are usually trying to be just too trendy and oh so cool... they generally feel "their style" is superior to others. Sorry, but people will play whatever style and game they enjoy and what they enjoy will vary over time. Anybody who thinks they know what paper and pencil RPGs "are all about"... lol

As far as lighting and shadows are concerned I think he's probably right, but imo thats almost there now (well, once all the Kreed / Doom3 / Stalker /new Gore engines are available).
Personally I think the physics in games is still about the same level as it was 5 years ago. I would like to see more advances in creating virtual gravities where solid objects are given a mass and will collapse realistically. For instance I would like to blow up a building in a game and see the bricks that make up the walls fall away where they have lost support or been knocked out of position.
Presumably the number of calculations required (each brick) would need a huge processor, and the memory requirement would be high.
Red Faction was a move in the right direction, but the Geo-Modding in that was still restricted to specific locations. A next generation Geo-mod engine would rock - just think of doing multiplayer where you can crush people in buildings by taking out supporting walls with a rocket launcher.

last i checked most roleplayers worth their salt would say that hack and slash grinding is "ROLL-playing," and not really the same thing at all... on the other hand, MUSH's are usually closer to what pen and paper RPG's are all about...

Awww, some days we all get a little grumpy.

I would be a bit hesitant tossing the label of "...juvenile and/or elitist" on all of the posters here. I think that this site (the users/boards) are better than most, the internet has a certain level of "Brave trolls behind the computer screen," worse things have been said, and this is a gaming site after all.

Playing games to have fun and maybe a little challenge :),

nmg, And just how many people would be playing Everquest right now if it was text only? If you want to get picky the MUDs drew on paper and pencil RPG roots, simply making it a paper & pencil experience at a distance. It would be more accurate of MMORPGs like Everquest to say they have both MUDs and First Person shooters in their ancestry. They would not exist without that combination. Small involvment... like saying you only need one parent.

No. Well obviously some are, DOOM3,Doom3 or DoOmIII may well be given its apparent horror movie feel. Others are not. Godgames and MMRPGs in particular reflect very well the maturity of their players.

#6,

"Doom napalmed the path for everything that followed: ... the Internet play of EverQuest"...Doom was the first game with solid multiplayer at all, thus making the first step in the evolution towards internet-based multi. So the quote/point was perfectly accurate.

The first solid internet based fantasy RPG was made in 1971. The first widely used internet RPG's were an offshoot, called MUDS. They were generally hosted off of different university networks or were persistent door games for BBS's. This is the technology that 'napalmed' the way for mmog's like Everquest.

DOOM may have had some small involvement with its better-than-previous graphics over a network. But there were still some graphical games out there that allowed direct-connect (serial-serial, IPX, modem, etc.) a few years before DOOM. Claiming that it paved the way for everything that followed (especially Everquest, whose roots are firmly planted in MUDS) is a gross overstatement.

But id could pocket some cash from Microsoft. Redmond keeps calling, trying to convince the company to release a version of Doom III for the Xbox: "We're being offered a pretty significant amount of money to sit on it until an Xbox port is done," says Carmack. id hasn't announced a decision yet.

Which if I interpret correctly, means that Microsoft not only wants an exclusive port for the XBox, but they don't want the PC version of D3 released until the XBox port is ready to go.

Presumably Microsoft figures that a lot of gamers are waiting to see what the system requirement for D3 are before they do any major upgrades. If the XBox version is ready at the same time, those gamers might just decide to buy an XBox instead of shelling out the cash for a new video card/processor/memory/whatever.

I don't care though. I've already paid for my copy of D3 and I want it now! Now, now, NOW!

Oh wait... we're supposed to be laying off the juvenile stuff, aren't we?
