Human Head & the DOOM III Engine

I have to admit to missing the boat here, as Human Head Studios sent along a job opening email that didn't have a web link, so I wrote back for that without the content of the mail really sinking in, as the opening (which is indeed listed on the Human Head Studios Website) is for a level designer for what is easily inferred to be an unannounced game using the DOOM III engine. Here's a bit on that: "Human Head Studios is looking for a level design head to add to our collection for a project using the Doom 3 engine." And this: "Skills in level design for other engines are also a plus, but to be considered for this position, you must have skill in creating levels for the Doom 3 or Quake 3 engines (including games based on the Quake 3 engine)." The original mail about this is prefaced with this note: "Please note that as usual, Human Head and its employees cannot comment on unannounced projects."

A quick search on 3Dgamers solved my problem. It was Human Soft, not Human Head, that was developing SEED. And they have the test demo too.

Thinking it's better to do a bit of research before making a post,

Well, a quick search on Yahoo pops up a number of results:
http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=seed+demo

As ever, our favorite file site has a listing, too:

Hoping that helps out,

Wasn't Human Head working on a FPS called Seed way back when? I remember it had realtime shadowing, among other things. Damn, I wish I had kept that demo. Anyone know where to get it?

The iD website has details, including costs, on their licensing options. I'd post a link, but I uhhhhhh... don't know how. You can find the info easily enough if you go to idsoftware.com, though.

Basically, the licensing cost for the Q3 engine is $250K guarantee against 5% of the wholesale revenue. Not a bad little setup.

It would be very cool if they'd breathe new life in Prey. The gameplay movies and screenshots released back in 97-98 looked very impressive for graphics at the time. But I wonder how much of the original material in terms of engine features (there was something they called 'portal technology', which looked pretty cool) but especially artwork and leveldesign. Probably very little, so they're basically just using the name

Of course, it's part of the great Talon Brave franchise!

Says they are using Unreal Next-Gen for a Wild West Game..

That one has been announced on Human Head's site as well. Seeing as this is for an 'unannounced' game using the Q3/DOOM3 tech, seems reasonable that it's a different game.

*Edit* - Also here's an old link on what Alex is refering to about Prey:

I wonder how much arranging for licensing of the DOOM III engine, which is of course for an unfinished game, costs?

I read once that the license for the Quake 3 engine (just before the game was released) was charged at $3.3 million.

Seems a lot, but then if Eidios paid John Remero $60m to start his own company (Ion Storm), then maybe not.

Plus I very much doubt that the licensing agreements of either engine would allow that. Home-made additions, sure, but a competitor's engine? Nah.

Perhaps he meant grafting the two engines together. Boy wouldn't that be a fun job.

Grafting those two engines together would likely be so much work that it would completely destroy the benefits of using somebody else's engine in the first place. You might as well write your own...

Here's to hoping. I need another good hack and slash game.

Yeah, I also liked Rune even though it wasn't that popular. Enclave is good if you're looking for a new "hack 'n slash" game. Some things I liked better in Rune though.

Im asuming the level editor will be similar to the quake3 one.

But it was only a matter of time before the engine got liscensed by others.
