New Half-Life Desert Crisis

A new version 1.5 of the Desert Crisis Half-Life Modification is now available. The new version is available as a full 128 MB installer, or as a 66 MB patch for previous versions. Additionally, a new version 1.5 of the dedicated server is available for either Linux or Windows. They have also posted an updated version of the manual for the mod. Among the features of the new version are all-new U.S.A. player models, a new HUD and color scheme, two new maps, updates to some older maps, new arm models and skins, a new flamethrower model (and effects & animations), improved in-game music, and more.

DC is not supposed to be realistic in anyway so if you only enjoy DOD, Counter Strike or even Firearm type mods don’t bother. For others who like the game play styles of Action Half life The Specialists or Even the Original Half life death match you should really love DC. It has a very varied arsenal of weapons equipment and special abilities to choose from. So you can play the game any way you want. The objectives in the maps do encourage a level of cooperation and team play (most of the time) and it has the only limb popping system (a bit SOF2 esc) on the Half life engine, so you get lots of feed back as to whether or not you’ve killed someone. No more squinting and looking for the kill icon with your name in the corner.

This mod could be considered a half-way point between AHL (or TS), and FA (or FLF). More militaryish than the former, less realistic than the latter. Just try it, the only real way to know if you like it.

The MOD is fun to play, has lots of weapons and TON of player models and characteristics. I think if you have hl and a fast internet connection, then it's totally worth checking out. Seems that DC is after the specific kind of gamers, and if you're one of them you'll be happy to find something done by the people of same interests.

I remember downloading the very first release of this way back when. I didn't play it long, as I was much more interested in Firearms at the time. It seemed like a standard army combat mod, with a focus on Attack/Defend maps.

This version though, is like a totally new game. Maybe my memory of the original is wrong, but Desert Crisis 1.5 is just ArmyActionHL. Maps still seem to be about attacking and defending areas, but no one cares as pretty much everyone is jumping around with akimbo pistols/shotguns/mp5ks.

My thoughts on playing it were simply: What the hell?

The manual for the game has a lengthy description of 'past' events before the 'current' (2053) time, and introduces the player to the factions he can choose to between. And then everyone starts doing flips while firing their dual USP Matches.

It feels like the designers had a nice idea they wanted to bring to life, spent a bunch of time working to get there, and when they finally did they found it wasn't all that interesting so one of them said 'Hey wouldn't it be cool if you could walljump and run around with a pair of machetes?' So they started throwing in every 'cool' thing they could come up with and kissed the setting and story goodbye.

Maybe that's not how it went, but that's the feeling it gives me. This mod lost it's focus.

I've already deleted it, and I certainly won't be playing it again. But if ActionHL is your thing, maybe you should give it a shot. Maybe.

well, i went ahead and downloaded this. What a mistake. There's only like 6 servers for it, and with good reason. You're left wondering why it was a 128 meg file. Where'd the 128 megs go? Did they install a DVD quality porn movie on here or something?

The game's graphics, character models, map designs.... are all mediocre. Nothing new here, folks, move along, move along. The gameplay feels old. Like 10 years old. Older than Doom old.

Right . . .
The guns are hardly "all the same" in Day of Defeat. Neither do you spend much time at all waiting to spawn--usually a max of 10 seconds. That is excepting, of course, the 3 hardly-played para maps. I wouldn't call it a "boring campfest" either, but I suppose that all depends on your personal taste.

As for Desert Crisis . . . I played the first release and was pretty unimpressed.

DOD ----> Desert Crisis
----------------------------------------------
The guns are all same ----> Tons of different guns

Mostly waiting to spawn ----> Mostly gunfighting

Lying "prone" ----> Flipping around, walljumping

Shovels as melee weapons ----> Electrified sledge hammers

Boring campfest ----> Pretty cool game
