DoD Retail Details

There's a Day of Defeat preview on GameSpy.com based on getting to attend a press event last night, where they learned more about the retail plans for this game that started life as a Half-Life modification: "Activision will not only be publishing Day of Defeat as a standalone game, but this will mark the beginning of a partnership with Valve Software spanning several games." They also offer news that the game is imminent, expected on store shelves on May 6. They quote some of the developers and the folks from Valve, and provide the gameplan for updating the free version of the mod:
Current online players need not worry about missing out on the fun. According to Lombardi, Valve is planning to release patches to make sure the online and retail versions of DoD are fully compatible, including the updated maps, weapons and code base. (The new maps are also being planned for an online release, but not immediately. )

DoD's a great mod ...but... enough with the HL engine... isn't it a bit tired?

Well for the legions of people why can't run BF1942 probably don't mind. You can sell much more to a lower common denominator.

What I want to know is how many of those people haven't bought Half-Life yet. I mean, the original game can still be had for like $30 or less (non-precious metal versions) and you can just download the mods for free.

How many copies could Counter-Strike have possibly sold? Maybe that's what's really going on here - Counter-Strike performed like a dog at retail and Sierra passed on DoD. I wonder what Activision is thinking then?

Well, I respect Valve for not forgetting the loyal fans and releasing the new updates for free downloads.

fuck DoD. I'm so tired of all these Mods being sold as retail games, when they engine that they're modded for is old as hell. Its time to put the HL engine away, and in with the newer engines. I think its great that Mods are going retail now, but make DoD on a newer engine, maybe then it will sell.

It must be the sophomore jinx. 3D Realms is MIA, now Valve remains off the radar of any new original game releases. Perhaps one day there will be a show called "Behind the software", and we will see people like Gabe Newell and George Broussard on there talking about the "good old days" of game development and how after their one big hit things just never seemed to be the same. So much for capitalizing on the momentum of their previous hits. Rumors of Half-Life 2 (and some other game called Duke Nukem Forever I think)have ocassionally surfaced, but other than that, I find it thoroughly depressing that the company who redefined the action shooter genre has not even ANNOUNCED their INTENTIONS to develop a new, ORIGINAL game title. Deus Ex, save me!

really though, when any game company sells a mod for retail they realize almost complete profit: there's no development cost, only the the manufacturing costs.

I have no idea why Sierra passed on this one and am curious to find out...

Does this mean maybe Valve will tell us how to uninstall the Sierra Utilities installed with Half-Life that no longer work and cannot be uninstalled?

If anyone knows how to get the uninstaller to run without uninstalling all my Half-Life programs, let me know.

Actually Counter-Strike broke several million copies sold last I checked.

That's way more than Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and a buttload of other way-more deserving games.

Yup, CS Retail has easily sold more than 1 million units. Not bad considering a mod for an 8 year old engine is out-selling the latest and greatest tech demos.

It really is all about the gameplay...

That has a lot to do with it, but I think the biggest thing is its low system requirements. Most people are not geeks like us and don't have the latest/greatest hardware.

DOD is the greatest game ever to grace humanity. Exciting, fun, teamwork, voice chat. Without a doubt, this game has the best map design from a user community ever. Even Robin Williams admitted to being addicted to this game.
Hopefully they'll package the retail game with all the custom maps. Maybe History Channel videos of the various guns too. "The Gun: The Kar98" "The Gun: The Thompson"

*grin*. They better package a lot of custom made sound packs and models too, because the default ones are never as good as the player made ones

Plus, Robin Williams talked about gaming on a talk show once, and I'm pretty certain that Blue mentioned his appearance in an OOTB, but I couldn't find it in a Blammo search.

As fun as this MOD is, I can't see it being worthy of retail, it still needs a lot of work. Same with CS. With the ease of creating cheats for th Half-Life engine, I'll definately not purchase anything. VAC only works for known cheats, and even then they are easy to bypass with a few line changes. Thumbs up to valve for trying, but it's all in vain. UT2K3 is probably the more difficult engine to cheat on, though it can be done, it isn't easy.

I wish Valve would finish their new engine soon and then release DoD retail on it. I imagine that they'll build some sweet anti-cheating stuff right in, which of course can be easily updated just like the current VAC. Then, and only then, might I buy DoD.

Gameplay and low system requirements are one thing, an existing user base is another. It takes either a lot of resources or very good arguments to draw people to a new "standard". New games have to compete not only with solid gameplay and low system requirements, but with tens of thousands of people familiar with Counterstrike/HL.

"Activision will not only be publishing Day of Defeat as a standalone game, but this will mark the beginning of a partnership with Valve Software spanning several games."

If only Valve HAD several games. Let's see, I guess they could do Half-Life from the scientists' perspective, and the aliens', and maybe the Black Mesa janitorial staff, and maybe a medical staff one, and an administrative one...

Wow. The possibilities ARE endless.
