j4ck50n, the point is they could do MORE with a newer engine. The limitations of the Half Life engine restrict the game, and hence the gameplay. As for keeping them from using a different engine -- it's a mod. They didn't say "let's choose the Half Life engine, it's technically superior to any other engine out there". They probably chose it for the support mod teams get from Valve (which is good), the size of the community /popularity of the game engine, and the familiarity many of the team members had with the engine, it's mods and the tools used in modding Half Life.
As for why not a newer engine, what's wrong with larger outdoor environments, superior rendering capabilities, improved sound, and other technical goodies. Is that going to do away with the gameplay? Does having a better engine stop them from producing a superior game? No. It just adds to their ability to produce an even better game. I wouldn't say improved eyecandy hurts either -- it adds to the atmosphere, the sense of immersion, in the game.
I would think that's all pretty obvious. I'll take DoD on the current engine, I'd just like to see what they could do with a better one.
