DoD Retail Details

There's a Day of Defeat preview on GameSpy.com based on getting to attend a press event last night, where they learned more about the retail plans for this game that started life as a Half-Life modification: "Activision will not only be publishing Day of Defeat as a standalone game, but this will mark the beginning of a partnership with Valve Software spanning several games." They also offer news that the game is imminent, expected on store shelves on May 6. They quote some of the developers and the folks from Valve, and provide the gameplan for updating the free version of the mod:
Current online players need not worry about missing out on the fun. According to Lombardi, Valve is planning to release patches to make sure the online and retail versions of DoD are fully compatible, including the updated maps, weapons and code base. (The new maps are also being planned for an online release, but not immediately. )

I agree. Most people don't have the horsepower or geek know how to own and manage a high end system. This way they get a p3 and a 16 meg vid card and they're golden. At least Joe Six Pack is off those stupid stupid Deer Hunting Games of two years ago.

j4ck50n, the point is they could do MORE with a newer engine. The limitations of the Half Life engine restrict the game, and hence the gameplay. As for keeping them from using a different engine -- it's a mod. They didn't say "let's choose the Half Life engine, it's technically superior to any other engine out there". They probably chose it for the support mod teams get from Valve (which is good), the size of the community /popularity of the game engine, and the familiarity many of the team members had with the engine, it's mods and the tools used in modding Half Life.

As for why not a newer engine, what's wrong with larger outdoor environments, superior rendering capabilities, improved sound, and other technical goodies. Is that going to do away with the gameplay? Does having a better engine stop them from producing a superior game? No. It just adds to their ability to produce an even better game. I wouldn't say improved eyecandy hurts either -- it adds to the atmosphere, the sense of immersion, in the game.

I would think that's all pretty obvious. I'll take DoD on the current engine, I'd just like to see what they could do with a better one.

uhm, thats the point exactly.
Why a newer engine? Whats wrong with the HL engine? It's old, so what.
If they wanted to use a newer engine then they would, I mean c'mon. "Got a Shot?" Someone is *keeping* them from using a diff engine?
It's about >gameplay< not eyecandy.

It *is* old... that's for you j4ck50n But if ever a Halflife mod deserves a retail release it's DoD. The engine is an antique, but it's amazing what they did with it for DoD. Good stuff, far better as a game IMHO than CS ever was. It would be nice if these guys got a shot at using a newer engine, all that passion for the game and a newer engine...

All I've heard regarding Gooseman's(Creator of CS) gains from CS going retail is that "he isn't rich"(This from one of the DoD team members).

Also, some of you may not realize this; if you already own HL, you won't need to pay to play the latest version of DoD, same as CS.

I play DoD because, out of all the games I purchase, it without a doubt has the most replayability. Graphics are decent, gameplay is awesome, and most importantly, the majority of the player base are decent chaps.

so if CS retail has sold over 1 million copies, how much cash does the CS creator (forget his name) take home with him? any idea from those who have exposure in the industry?

..was on I believe David Letterman quite a few years back, making jokes about online gaming and Quake1 in particular. At one point, he makes a reference to himself playing Quake online, and said something to the effect of:

"Quake is great! I get to run around in dark scary places, where the college kids jump out from behind corners and blow my head off.. Then proceed to play soccer with my decapitated head!"

I LMFAO heh

Never fails, any mention of HL and the "why, it's so old" posts come out.
If you don't like it, don't play it, otherwise stfu and post to a thread that is relevant to yourself.
I have been reading this shite for years now and it is as played as /. posts raggin on MS.
They make and sell mods cos it is good and people play it, period.

It doesn't matter, it's all about the $$$ and these fuckers are laughing all the way to the bank. You can say what you want, but as long as people keep buying up Counterstrike and other variations of the original HL then they will keep rehashing it.

If only Valve HAD several games. Let's see, I guess they could do Half-Life from the scientists' perspective, and the aliens', and maybe the Black Mesa janitorial staff, and maybe a medical staff one, and an administrative one...

Wow. The possibilities ARE endless.

Gameplay and low system requirements are one thing, an existing user base is another. It takes either a lot of resources or very good arguments to draw people to a new "standard". New games have to compete not only with solid gameplay and low system requirements, but with tens of thousands of people familiar with Counterstrike/HL.

As fun as this MOD is, I can't see it being worthy of retail, it still needs a lot of work. Same with CS. With the ease of creating cheats for th Half-Life engine, I'll definately not purchase anything. VAC only works for known cheats, and even then they are easy to bypass with a few line changes. Thumbs up to valve for trying, but it's all in vain. UT2K3 is probably the more difficult engine to cheat on, though it can be done, it isn't easy.

I wish Valve would finish their new engine soon and then release DoD retail on it. I imagine that they'll build some sweet anti-cheating stuff right in, which of course can be easily updated just like the current VAC. Then, and only then, might I buy DoD.

Plus, Robin Williams talked about gaming on a talk show once, and I'm pretty certain that Blue mentioned his appearance in an OOTB, but I couldn't find it in a Blammo search.

DOD is the greatest game ever to grace humanity. Exciting, fun, teamwork, voice chat. Without a doubt, this game has the best map design from a user community ever. Even Robin Williams admitted to being addicted to this game.
Hopefully they'll package the retail game with all the custom maps. Maybe History Channel videos of the various guns too. "The Gun: The Kar98" "The Gun: The Thompson"

*grin*. They better package a lot of custom made sound packs and models too, because the default ones are never as good as the player made ones
