BF1942: Secret Weapons Shots

Electronic Arts has released the first handful of screenshots from Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, the just-announced second add-on for Digital Illusions' World War II combat game. The shots show off some of the weaponry Abe Simpson never reminisced about, including surface-to-air missiles, flying wing jets, and of course 'look ma no-hands' parachutes.

Back in December, a friend described BF1942 to me before I had ever played.

Me: Sounds sort of like DoD.

Friend: Yeah, but you can get into any vehicle, any vehicle they used in WWII.

Me: Motorcycles?

Friend: (Sheepishly) No.

Of course, since then, I've played the game a lot, but I've always been sad when there was a potential Steve McQueen/Great Escape moment, if only I had a bike. I sure hope they're mad fast.

I liked using the flamethrower in the user made western map in RTCW. I would guard my team's underground checkpoint by firing the flames up the well whenever anyone was foolish enough to go in it. Haha good times.

"Me, I can't wait to get a hold of that German anti-aircraft tank--someone out there who watches the History Channel more than I do can probably tell me what that is."

That's the Wirbelwind--Deutsch for whirlwind. Like the ZSU-23 from Desert Combat, a direct descendant of the Wirbelwind.

As for flying wings and the like, serious work started in the 1930's, just as rocket power for planes did. Both Northrop and Horten had flying prototypes during the war, but neither had production examples fly. The Horton nee' Gotha 229 was under construction when the Allies overran the facility, and was all set for an early summer '45 test run.

They are only creating all these new weapons cos of the war in iraq, sort of trying to cash in on modern tecnology and then selling it to the kids

Its like this: we all see stealth bombers in iraq on tv so when we see it in a game we are supposed to say 'thats sooo coool maaan' and rush out and get it as soon as its on the shelves. and in the rush of excitement we all forget thats the game is actually based in 1944, duh!

i rest my case

Common they have to have this plane. Knowing that it was really the only practical jet at the time.

True, most of these vehicles either existed or prototypes existed towards the end of the war--both sides were experimenting with fixed-wing bombers, for example. Now, the jetpack, that's just silly I'd always thought that BF42 was an homage to the Tribes series and, ultimately, what Tribes 2 *should* have been. Now it looks like they're ripping it off completely Hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Me, I can't wait to get a hold of that German anti-aircraft tank--someone out there who watches the History Channel more than I do can probably tell me what that is.

Good catch, IvyMike! I didn't see the motorcycle. I wonder how much faster than the jeep. Obviously, it is narrow enough to squeeze through tight places (i.e., between tanks).

"ask yr self this, how real is it gonna be everyone flying a secret plane around with heat seeking rockets 6 years before the prototype had even been invented?"

What the hell are you talking about? The Wasserfall and the AW-52 were in development in 1944. It's a 'game' if you hadn't realized. And not too big on realism in the first place. You get to play with secret projects that never saw major use or success.

"none of those site mention the year 1942"

It didn't occur to you that game isn't just about the year 1942? Even with Omaha Beach (D-Day was June 6th 1944 by the way)? Hell, Battle of the Bulge wasn't until December 16, 1944 to January 28, 1945. 1942 was just the year all the key players had entered the war and the tide of battle turned in the allied favor.

"so i win"

Yeah, I'll let you guess which award.

You know selling dlc before you patch the client doesn't impress upon me the need to support your shit. -massdev

They allow dial-up on BF1942? Eh, the lepers... All future PC games should be like the XBOX and allow broadband only, if possible.

If you have dial up don't even bother with this game. You need a decent high speed connection.

My question is, can you play this game with dial up or does it need cable modem?? And im not talking about someone looking at the box. Thats a bunch of crap. Can you REALLY play with dialup or is it too laggy?
