BF1942: Secret Weapons Official

The rumors (story) about plans for a second BF1942 add-on have been basically confirmed (story), but EA and Digital Illusions Announce Development of Battlefield 1942 Secret Weapons of WWII for the PC (thanks ToTheGame) is the official press release announcing the project. Word is: "Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, scheduled for release in fall 2003, will significantly enhance the multiplayer combat experience by bringing the most unique and deadly weapons from the German and Allied laboratories to life on the battlefields of World War II." The announcement goes on to describe new weapons and enhanced gameplay as well as additional vehicles, described here:
In Secret Weapons of WWII, players will engage in war with a choice of up to 46 vehicles to control. In addition to the 30 vehicles introduced in the original game such as fighter planes, tanks, and aircraft carriers, players can operate 16 new vehicles including the Horton HO 229 "Flying Wing" that is equipped with 30 mm machine guns and missiles. Other vehicles consist of a U.S. Sherman tank with a T-34 Calliope rocket launcher, U.S. T95/T28 Super Heavy Tank, the Sturmtiger (naval gun mounted on Tiger tank), U.S. Goblin jetfighter, C-47 cargo plane that will serve as a mobile spawn point, the American Armstrong Whitworth AW-52 advanced fighter, the German Wasserfall guided anti-air missile and the German Natter rocket plane. Also, for the first time, Secret Weapons of WWII will give players the chance to fly and fight at the same time with a top secret German prototype Rocket Pack.

It's a game, right? Planetside will be the next Tribes, or more correclty, what Tribes 2 should have been; lets hope. Wish it was free to play though. These new secret weapons I'm sure will provide a few little additions to the tactical element but will provide no huge advantage to one side or the other. Yes, it's just a gimmick, but any game is just a gimmick. It's how that gimmick is implimented which will make it more fun for the masses or just piss a lot of people off who are content with mastering the game as is and hate the idea of the ordinary joe knocking their ego in the dirt for awhile. I'm sure these type of players, if not cheaters, will master the new weapons in time. Those who cheat will remain pissed until they can find a hack for the new stuff.

German prototype rocket packs would go for about 10 seconds before running out of fuel.
I don't see how they will be of great use. There's a reason why these things all stayed prototypes.

don't forget burnt asses majorgeeks!! yikes!

I can see rocket packs being pretty lame in a game. They'd have to have a low maximum height so that they couldn't be too hard to shoot down. Also I hope they are like vehicles where there'd only be 2 or so lying around at one time and you'd go up and use it like vehicle. I'm not sure if I'd buy this one though. Time will tell.

While I don't play bf:1942 this expansion sounds more like a gimmick than anything worthwhile. They'd have been smarter to release BF:1975 or something a bit less... silly. Then agian what other war game lets you stand on a planes wings while it flys and shoot people with your machine gun. Guess they are worried about planetside about to come out

I'm surprised at how many people are passing off historical facts and/or interpretationsas "ghey," I believe it was. Education, education, education.

Rocket pack COULD be fun, it was called Tribes I think if a game like this is to attempt to be a simulation, then we all seem to be in agreement that this thing was a prototype, meaning VERY short distances, broken legs and mechanical failures. In other words, useless, but fun to try out. I think they would have to allow a longer amount of flytime and it would actually ruin the game, I mean who here would not at least try it out? I think if it was in the game, I would use it all the time for the fun factor of it, but it would ruin the experience for everyone overall..

Hmm, I just remembered I bought the first add on and didnt install it yet...

this has to be the dumbest idea for an expansion pack ever. I'm all for more weapons and maps, and I'm even willing to pay, but to throw in crap like rocket packs is just plain gay. There are a million things they could add before having to resort to that kind of wackadoo garbage.

Sweet! Someone from ve3d.com posted some links in http://ve3d.com/Comments.aspx?ID=4156&contenttype=1 ... Interesting stuff. I am still debating to get this addon or not. It is far too early to decide.

America Had the experimental jetpack.
It was pretty much like the one in that james bond movie.
It used compressed steam or something like that.
only had about 40 seconds of thrust, so they could go up, hover a bit, and then come down. The inventor had to stop test driving them himself after he broke both his ankles I think.

I don't know about the German prototype rocket pack. It sounds silly. Maybe I won't get this addon. Anyways, does anyone have information on this prototype on the Internet? I did a quick Google and didn't find many hits. It seems like it really did happen for experimental. Maybe there are videos as well of the tests?

Have to admit... sounds as good as adding rollerblades to the game to me...in other words it'll really make it weird. At the moment when you're running you don't really look up for planes. Now you have to monitor the sky above you... don't like this idea at all...

oh yeah... isn't the asian add-on for this actually vietcong? It's getting some great reviews and seems to stand on it's own two feet quite well.

As far as I can tell, all this stuff was actually being developed, albeit in prototype forms, during WWII.
I think its a really cool idea to include them in an add-on.
Also, presumably there will be servers that support it and servers that don't - so as the ole cliche goes:
If you don't like it - don't play it.
