EVE Online Preview

There's an EVE Online: The Second Genesis Preview on GameSpy.com calling CCPs' upcoming outer-space MMORPG "The triumph of hyper-capitalism." They offer extensive first hand impressions of things like character creation, the storyline, space ships, navigating the game universe, comparisons to a certain other MMORPG under production since a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away, and more. Included are some developer quotes and some new screenshots.

I recall that it's been a publically stated promise that the avatar would be upgradeable with implants and accessories. There's a few things I would like to say about the state of the game, but can't, but I don't think that CCP is frowing too hard on some small infractions of the NDA.
The big judgement of Eve will be the judgement that's passed when the servers are opened to the public, at that point I'll probably complain as loudly as anyone if it isn't any good, but up to that point, I have patience based on the quality of what CCP have delivered so far.

If they're smart, they'll keep it under NDA for a while too. I bet the release gets pushed back at least a month. And no, I'm not a beta tester, I only play one on Blues

To #10, read what Nexus just said, he's correct.
The press release said they would lift the NDA in a week or so time, as yet the EVE beta is STILL under NDA.

Incidently, I totally disagree with that. It's a space sim, there is no need whatsoever for your character to run around in a space station. All the action is supposed to happen in space, the docks are just the maintenance stops in between. Making it possible to run around in them would be akin to allowing the player to exit the car and walk around during a pit stop in a racing game ...

In fact, you could (and had to) leave your space craft in E&B, and I thought that was incredibly annoying. My computer had to load a whole new level, and the developers had to either misuse a space graphics engine for indoor graphics or optimise it for indoor graphics that don't enhance gameplay in any way. Note that you didn't really do anything in the space stations. All it did was that you, instead of clicking on a market button (3 seconds), had to walk to a merchant (30 seconds). I didn't notice any PC-PC interaction happening on the space stations, either, and why would there be, really.

I think the avatar system of EVE is pretty good, in its way. People say that you never see the face you create in the beginning, well that's simply not true. It's attached to your character, a smaller version, at least. You see other characters faces quite often, in fact. However, I agree there should be more point to them - maybe they ought to be prominent in PC to PC interaction, and maybe there should be visual changes to the avatars depending on your gameplay decoration (scars, medals, etc).

And, of course, in a space game, the place to personalize is not the comparably irrelevant character, but rather the space ship. I haven't seen much happening in that direction, probably because it's a fine line to tread.

Sidenote: Only a few weeks till Escape Velocity: Nova is released for PC, woohoo.

oh, I just got in on the beta and it still has NDA stuff to join so I didn't know it was lifted, but in that case here are my original comments:

"hehe, I also don't know what the hell I'm supposed to be doing in the game. it has promise, it looks like depth, and the graphics are next gen and awesome, but I also don't think it's going to be a lot of people's type of game. The fact that it's a 3d game but you never get to see your character or anyone else's is kind of dumb, they should add stations and planets where you can. the character creation is pixel shaded delight and just makes the game that much more disappointing that that's the only time you get to see a 3d character. (except for the generic figure that is frozen in space after you blow up your pod)"

but additionally, I dunno some people might dig this type of game, people who like stats and trading and stuff, but to me it's just boring. why play a "capitalism" simulator even if it has a space theme, when we already live it? most people find work boring enough to begin with. And it could really benefit by adding character third person and letting you go through parts of the game with your character and interact. what's a mmorpg without being able to see your character? particularly in an outerspace environment you definitely have to do more to personalize and bring it down to earth or just feels so empty and boring. worth a demo download to try it out though if they do a demo

The NDA has been lifted a week or so ago. The press release stating that was also posted here on Blue's. So no worries.

I haven't played for a while, I'll try again, though. The first times I did play, it was, indeed, quite boring. Which is a shame, since I looked forward to it a lot. After Earth & Beyond and this, I'm not sure whether a space themed MMRPG is really viable. But as I said, I'm willing to give it another chance.

The character creation is, indeed, incredibly cool, they kind of could sell it as a standalone game. I probably spent more time morphing faces than playing the game itself.

Big deal, it's only used at char creation, and it's not even like you have an avatar in-game.

That aside it can't save the rest of the game which must be one of the most boring games I've EVER played. It's entirely pointless for solo players and casual gamers as well.

It looks nice, but even that gets old fast as you can only do so much with "space".

This game will be lucky to survive 2 years in retail, and if it does, it'll be very niche.

Yeah, same here. After I finished the tutorial, I didn't know what to do next. I'm not much into MMO games though.. and I never expected to be chosen for the beta since I had always been turned down before.

Yeah, I also liked the character creation, but it seems a bit much for that type of game. It would be different if it was more like Ultima where you actual character is seen.

I wish we were able to build our own ships.. or at least modify them similar to how we can modify our character.

Agreed.... When I first created a character for Eve I said, "This is how it should always be done... this will become the benchmark for character creation."

But they really don't do anything with that technology anywhere else in the game. (At least, nowhere that I’ve seen.) Your carefully crafted, exquisitely detailed character becomes a tiny static snapshot as far as the rest of the players are concerned. That was disappointing.
