Out of the Blue

So my cordless mouse freezes entirely after working perfectly. I try the magic 'jiggle the batteries' trick. No go. I can't imagine that it's a power issue at this point because I never experienced any warnings like skipping about, but I try a couple of near-dead triple-A batteries laying about. Viola! We have mouse again, so it was the power. This lasts for three minutes and then these (already used) batteries are dead too. Replacements have things ticking like Pittsburgh again, but I am left surprised at this new behavior from my mouse, as I don't recall ever seeing a battery-powered appliance not show any hints of intermittent operation before dying, and I am impressed with this mouse's ability to suck every least erg out of the batteries. The thing is, it never did this before, so I wonder where it learned all this?

My bro got that book for Christmas. I'll have to borrow it and read it sometime. Currently reading No Logo by Naomi Klein and liking it, and I read Stupid White Men by Michael Moore just recently. Muchos political/sociological type reading.

Cordless mice? Bah. Just get an optical and keep your desk clear.

The gender test... I think it's pretty clever. The reason some questions swing it a lot is because the way the test works (if you read the blurb) is that it feeds back into itself based on results. You know how you say at the end whether you actually are male or female? They assess your results and associate your answers with each gender and can then weight questions accordingly. The test is about a year old now, maybe more, so some questions are probably pretty weighty by now. Like the pockets thing... When they started they'll have suspected that most women won't use their pockets. As time has gone on and lots of people have said they don't use their pockets and then admitted to being women, or have said they do and then admitted to being men; the questions will have become quite weighted as a result of it being a strong indicator.

Did that make any sense?

Anyway, it always thinks I'm female. Every time.

I'm not BTW.

Also, it doesn't make you gay if you turn out the wrong sex. It's not testing sexuality. It's to do with androgyny, which is the gender of your mind. Your midn can be male, female or androgynous. You can be androgynous either by being both male and female mentally, or by not really being either. It's psychology.

I should really get back to work.

Been meaning to read that. Is it good?

You should definitely read it. I probably never would have heard about it had it not been for a history professor I had who made that book required reading for his class. Along with various documentaries about fast food and such. Believe me, it'll change how you think about the fast food industry altogether. From the business ethic that goes into running the fast food chains, to what exactly goes into those hamburger patties, it's frightfully eye-opening.

Heh; that is the reason I always purchase the cheap M$ keyboards. Excluding my own slobbish self, the cat and dog turn this whole house into a fur factory.

Dust? No, I fur.

My bedroom has white walls, a blue carpet, and a blue bedspread... so is it blue or white? Not that I really care... all I know is I'm way too much of a slob to have any room done in all white.

Thinking I could also use a black keyboard for the same reason (actually, this one is slowly turning black).

Looking at the graph, I am pretty sure that I am the middle!

I am with you, Hyatus. Right now, I would rather be feeling lonely rather than feeling the blood leave my body. As with 99.9999999% of these "tests," thought that it was retarded. With regards to the room, white is more common, but blue adds some color.

Yep, I just took the test over again and could change the results from 80% sure that I was a man to 80% sure I was a woman by changing the answer on whether my middle name ended in a vowel. The other question that will really sway it is whether or not you carry things in your pockets.

I'm a guy, but those are all things I agreed with the women on. On the graph, I was directly in the middle.

I was pretty close to the middle also. I thought there were a couple questions that really could have swung the whole thing, like: "does your middle name end in a vowel". I haven't thought that hard about it but at first glance it seems to me that most names that end in a vowel would be female.

I entirely agree. I feel the government should be subsidizing fresh foods much more.
One of the largest challenges here is that most people in lower middle-class and poor brackets can't afford to really eat properly and/or lack the education/desire as well.
That and it's easier to eat junk with a fast food and "convenience" stores on every corner, then taking time to shop and cook.
It's only going to get worse unless both government and private enterprise get involved.

I'd like it if healthy food in stores, restaurants, and fast food places cost less money. But that's going to cost money. Money used on health care, war, prisons, etc. So would America actually save money by "forcing" people to eat more healthy? I don't think so. Hey if people want to take drugs I don't care. Seems a little bit wrong for the government to tell us what we can do with our own body. And saving money isn't a very good excuse to start a religious war against people you hate.
Anyways getting old is pretty unhealthy. We should just cancel health care at age 40

More importantly this has all balooned (pun intended) over the last 40 years. In 1960 only 13% of the ENTIRE population was obese, and 2% clinically obese. To me that says America has just been getting too soft, flabby and lax.

This will not come as a surprise to anyone who has read even the first few pages of the introduction to Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.

Then your doctor didn't know what he was talking about. 170lbs is about right for someone 5'8 for the average Body Mass Index.

Body builders aren't obese because their mass is predicated on muscle, not fat. Fat is what defines obesity.

Anything in the range of 5-29lbs over your target BMI classifies you medically as obese.

Anything 30lbs over classifies you as clinically obese.

And actually I didn't break my stats clear enough. Around 55% of Americans are classified obese. 30% are clinically obese. That's just too much anyway you slice it.

A friend of mine is a physician in a Detroit hospital and thy have a wing their solely dedicated to dealing with obesity and obesity related health issues.
A ward full of people getting the fat sucked out and stapled stomachs because they lack the will to control their eating and excercise habits. Disgusting.
Some of the stories he tells me make me want to vomit. I was never big into junk food and athletic anyway, but after hearin most of his stories I've sworn off most of that crap for life.

It's time to start tying in incentives to get people fit. Big discouts on health insurance, tax credits, etc.
Obesity drives up medical costs, it costs in productivity and it's just disgusting to look at.
Time to get pumped up!

Almost 70% of American adults and children are now clinically obese! That's disgusting and speaks volumes of much larger social problems that need addressing before the country explodes like a donut jammed with too much jelly.

When i was 170 pounds at 5'8" my doctor told me i was over weight. He said i needed to loose 40 pounds. This was based on the government body charts. I'm sorry but if i would have lost 40 pounds that would have dropped me to 130 pounds. When i was younger and heavily into drinking and drugs i weighed 130 pounds and i looked gaunt and emaciated.

I seriously doubt that 70% of americans are truly obesse. The government charts also consider professional body builders (who have like what, 10% body fat) to be overweight. Give me a break.

You should get a mouse with a docking station. So when you're finishd using it you just dock it in and it recharges by itself. The docking station also doubles as your sensor for the mouse.
