Devastation: Sound Thinking

A post to our forums by Digitalo's Vic DeLeon reproduces a post he also made to the Devastation forums saying that they are hearing the displeasure folks are expressing about their displeasure at hearing the sounds in the Devastation demo:
The majority has spoken. Apparently this was a legitimate enough gripe and we will comply like the good developers we are trying to be. Most of the weapon sounds will be given an overhaul, with more bass, and pitch adjustments. I cannot promise anything but these changes should be in the full patch.

I wasn't planning to give this a try but there were a few positive comments, so I installed it. Well, it was uninstalled about 10 minutes later. What a waste of time. I totally see what people mean about the sound effects... The pistol sounds like a pop gun - no power or presence whatsoever. But the rest of the game is really lacking too. The graphics are a disgrace to the Unreal engine, particularly the character models. I didn't have any net code problems, and joining a server was easy and quick, but I didn't play for very long.

If I wanted to play this kind of game, I'd go play Action Quake 2 or Counterstrike. I can't see Devastation selling too many copies unless there are drastic changes to transform it from its current second-rate state to something compelling. I give the developers credit for trying, but the mod communities are several steps above this...

Good to see the fanboi's are still alive and kicking. For god sake, accept the reality already, the MP sucks. Deal with it, you loser.
Not a fanboi. Messageboard troll. Just pretend he didn't say anything. He'll eventually dry up and (apparently) shoot his dong off.

But didn't they say the lag issue is only a problem in the demo, and not in the full version of the game? Maybe they were just saying that so people would still buy it, but I think they'll try and fix any problems they can.

actually i downloaded the patch, and its still kindy dodgy. It seems to be lag related instead of graphics related, because as a ghost before the match everything looks really smooth and fluid. Plus the netcode seems wack - I dont know, maybe I wont buy it. Its too soon to tell since I cant trust any of the servers that are up now.

Rajajuju, you mentioned about four different problems with this demo, all of which seem fairly major in the scope of things (games, graphics, gameplay) yet you say you might buy it? Why???
"Wow this game does in fact suck largish cock, I think I'll buy it."
That just doesn't make sense to me.
"Wow it hurts to hit myself with this hammer, I think I'll do it harder."

No offense, but maybe you could explain why this game is worth even spitting on if it has the kinds of problems you mentioned? Nevermind the sound bytes (pun totally intended).

in real life, there is very little bass in a gunshot sound. It is not nearly as loud and boomy as the classic hollywood action movie sounds. But, people have gotten used to that, I guess

Very true. About the only aspect of a real gunshot sound that really compells the senses is it's volume. Aside from the distant echoes, it simply goes *BANG!* with only slight variations in pitch and tone between different small-arms calibers. Unfortunately the sound system in a typical PC is unable to capture the sheer volume of a real gunshot (If it did we'd all be deaf), so much of the impact is lost.

Hence the reason for "Hollywood-style" sound effects, which have been heavily edited to add some interesting nuances to what would otherwise be very uninspiring sounds. In reality it is difficult for a novice to determine a given type of firearm by simply listening to a single gunshot sound from it, a fact that many realism-oriented FPS games have alluded to.

I certainly hope that the devs of Devastation will do more than simply more bass, and pitch adjustments. I'm sure most of us who have tried their hand at gun sound effects for FPSs know that it takes a lot more than that to create compelling, high-impact, if slightly unrealistic, sfx.

Hey Raj, did you download the 3MB performance fix? That should have resalved your frame rate issues.

Also, as dedicated servers begin to show up, the online experience will have better FR and less lag.

I dont really get it to be honest... in real life, there is very little bass in a gunshot sound. It is not nearly as loud and boomy as the classic hollywood action movie sounds. But, people have gotten used to that, I guess. I found the weapon sounds in Devastation to be uninspiring as well, but at least a bit more accurate than most straight fps games.

But the real problem is the modeling and animation. People dont look like people (they are really blocky and fisher price looking), and they dont move like people... and when they die it looks like they are just falling asleep - not breathing their last breath. Plus, yhe whole engine moves like its a hog in sheeps clothing - I cant seem to get anything above a decent, stable frame rate. No superfluidity here.

The verdict is still out for me - Im gonna play the demo some more and then try to figure out if Im gonna buy the sucker. So far Im leaning towards buy... Ive been waiting so long for a new MP fps, I might just have to settle for now.

it's quite surprising that some developpers need real gamers to find out if something of their product needs more optimizing or not. I mean, the sound effects are indeed very poor compared to games released the last few months (years?). Why couldn't they have notice it by themselves?

Same thing for the animations, they indeed seem a bit too stiff... much worse than other Unreal engine based titles.

I haven't bothered to look up the release date of this game but it at least needs 8-10 months of tweaking and optimizing, Devastation seems very unpolished for the time being... and something needs to be done with the fighting sequences, they are really not very exciting.

I have been following this game since January, I know its potentual, and I am definatly NOT nit-piking. The bad SFX are a very large downside to this game (but wont be for long) and any other game. Other than that, this game is fucking awesome, period.

I just happen to care about the Audio worksmanship of any game (not that I know anything about that ) just as any Writer would to a Book, or Graphics Artist would to a Graphic Design.

...about some of its' sound fx seeming vaguely familiar. I'm a "amature sound engineer" myself, and was contemplating just re-do'ing those offending\shoddy sound fx myself. However, I may just wait till I can pick up the game. Being that it has as many weaps as it does in the retail release, there may very well be a few other bits of suck hiding in there ;-)

A bit of advice to the developer: in the future, when making a *gun game*, why not look up a local gun club - etc, and politely ask to record some guns being fired hehe. They'ed probably LOVE to assist you! Hell, i'd even be happy to do them for ya =] <cheap> just mail be a copy of Devastation and I'll get to work </cheap>

is it possible that they did that...and that's why they sound similar?

...maybe I'm wrong, you being an 'artist' and all, i"m sure you can tell the diff.

I'm sorry, but I'm just sick of people 'nit-picking' this game before it's even out. Give some props to these guys (small shop) instead of just pledging blind allegiance to all the same game companies over and over again(MS, id, Raven, EA, etc.)...take some time and really investigate the game before making a rash judgement. I know that's asking a lot of all you out there w/ a low attention span...but I htink you'll be happy once you do.

I love the way they used the para fire sound from Counter-Strike for the M16! (or whatever that big gun is called)

Besides they used loads of sfx from other games namely: HalfLife (CS), Team Factor, Mobile Forces..
Sorry.. im weird for recognizing these sounds, im a bit of a amatuer sound artist

Err, anyway, RECORD THE REALL SOUNDS LADIES.
