I wonder how long until Pixel Shader 2.0 is required hardware for a game. Hell, how long until Pixel Shader 2 is even included in a game??! anyways, progress is good. Switching disks is bad.

I'm wating until the DVD burners get their collective acts together, decide on one freaking format and the price starts to drop.

I agree. Until we can settle on one standard (or the majority of drives support all standards), I'm waiting on a dvd-r drive. I'm hoping Lite-On will get into the dvd burner market this year, as I love their cdr drives.

As far as games on dvd go, it's about damn time...I'm tired of playing "feed the cds".

I remember playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. There was a floppy version and a CD-Rom version. The floppy one was around 10 disks, but the CD version had voice dubbing for every line of text.

I didn't have a DVD-rom for a while since I found that I didn't watch movies. But now I have a 5.1 speaker set-up and a $50 sony dvd drive. I found dvd movies look actually really good, especially on a 21inch.

I think it is about time for software, mainly games, to come over on DVDs. The drives are so cheap and usually people can at least fit two drives in a pc, like a cd-r and dvd, and if they have a cd-r and a cd-rom with no more room, toss the cd-rom, you won't be needing it.

Some cheap machines, like an e-machine, just come with a cd-rom, but who ever buys that (probably with an integrated video card) won't be playing something like MGS2. So the machines that are more and better capable of playing recent games will most likley have a DVD drive.

Eventually CDs will be going the way of the floppy. Soon Dell will not include floppy drives as a standard part too.

I can imagine people will have cd-rs for a long time, but mainly for transfering files and DVD drives for software. Just how it was with floppies to transer files and CDs for software until when the cd burners became so cheap.

Cripes...DVD drives cost, what, half the price of this game?
It's not like you need a new $200 pixel shading video card
or anything. It's a cheap-ass upgrade, so stop being so
cheap and upgrade.

I think the only problem facing DVD drives right now is
the bigger companies(Sony, etc...) want to switch to blue
light for more space. Wish to hell they'd hurry up with
that.

DVD Drives are only standard if you don't build the PC yourself. What reason do I have to have a DVD drive? Seriously. I don't watch movies on my PC. So what would be the point? I won't be buying this game...

I'm wating until the DVD burners get their collective acts together, decide on one freaking format and the price starts to drop.

I'm sick and tired of being an early adopter.

I'm also cranky.

The closest I came to buying one is that Sony that reads just about every format out there right now.

Bout time, ALL game should come out on DVD. It's long overdue.

Ya. I hate changing like 10 CD's in and out when I install or play a game. Baulders Gate was bad for that man. 6 CD's.

Didn't anyone read the HomeLan Fed article linked from today's Morning Q&A? While I'm happy to see games being sold on DVDs, the article goes into detail from game developers as to why they still release on CD.

edit:
Hrm. HomeLan seems borked right now. Bleah.

Nice! This is good progress. The CD-ROM is at least 10 years old, 650MB media just can’t cut it for ever. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if we saw the next generation of optical-removable media (consumer level) released in the next few years.

I know this will be an issue for some gamers, but there's no better way to increase industry support. And, come on, DVD-ROM drives are considerably inexpensive these days. I see many going for as low as $15 on eBay. Of course, this is not to mention, I'm sure this is also about the publisher saving money. I'm betting its less expensive to manufacture one DVD these days than multiple CDs.

In the long run, this is a good move for not only publishers, but developers and gamers alike. Sure, some might take issue with the abundance of cut scenes in Solid Substance, but many games _will_ benefit from the increased space garnered through greater DVD-ROM market share.

Funny, this brings to mind another DVD-ROM game… Enter the Matrix. I was reading a recent article about how Shiny was facing the dilemma of cramming their game into 5GB. Made me wonder how they will have to gimp the GameCube version and it’s proprietary 1GBG-CD?! I’m sure we’ll all want them to cut out as much crappy bullet-time cinematics as possible, eh? They’re filming this game in conjunction with the 2nd and 3rd Matrix films, btw.

Come on, its about time they started doing this.

Most new games, and MGS2 also, will require a 1gig processor and a decent graphics card and so forth. DVD drives have been on new computers since ~500mhz, and any "casual gamer" has to keep with the times.

How many machines with a high enough spec to run games like this DON'T have a DVD drive??? Besides, they only cost about £25 now, its hardly going to break the bank.

DVD drives are standard on all new machines and have been for a while, as well as being reasonably priced all round.

I'm quite keen to stop seeing 3 discs with 2 for install and one for play, this could well cut down on the install footprint for some of these games.

got no problem with games coming out on DVD ROM only, much better than the increasingly regular game releases on multiple CD's (U2, UT2K3, SC, RS etc) bout bloody time!

MGS however *should* probably come out on DVD ROM only since its a feckin movie with a semi interactive game buried somewhere deep, deep down inside

While I couldn't give a flying crap about this POS game, I very much welcome the move to DVD. DVD ROMs are ridiculously cheap now, and this will help them get even cheaper.
Bring them on!

It's about time! Back in the days of the floppy disk to CD transition, most companies released their games on both floppies and CDs (in different packages) to reach the whole market. I hope we skip this step altogether for the CD to DVD transition, and it'd be great to see all games get released on DVD within a year or two.

FINALLY someone gets it right. Why bother with 4 or 5 CD releases anymore. It just doesn't make sense. What kind of gimp doesn't have a DVD-ROM, they are like 30 bucks now.
