Well I got the game and I am pulling my hair out as I type since my DVD drive aside from not being able to read DVDs, it won't read this. I read about how to fix it which deals with stuff that can permanetly destroy my DVD Drive which means no more regular cds as well. Looks like I'm going to have to hold on to it until I get a new DVD drive since mine is being idiotic. BYW-The manual is pretty indeph though has a lot of PS2 controls reference, R1-R2, blah blah which is a turn off since I don't like hearing port when I buy a console port game. BAhhhhhhhhh!

If I was a developer I would seriously consider making all my games dvd sized.

hell, it's not so much more when you consider a 3 disk game is 2.1GBs. Broadband, start the download, wait a week, pay no money.

I'm not sure that I even fathon the concept of building a modern pc without a DVD drive. There's plenty of DVD movies that have additional PC content as part of their 'added value specials', several gaming magazines have DVD issues with extra content and with the rising number of disks involved in games, the coming switch has been as inevitable as the switch from floppy drives was.
Heck, it was more expensive for me to build in a Zip drive for out-dated compatability with other systems than it was to install a DVD drive, and I have 4 available slots (1 DVD, 1 CD-RW, 1 Audigy Platinum Livedrive and 1 HD cooler for my SCSI drive). I'll be throwing out the DVD in favour of a DVD+R soon.

Honestly, not anticipating this move given the costs involved seems just to be backward.

People dont mind spending several hundred dollars on a new video card, but they bitch about 10 dollars more for a dvd drive?

And it is effecting piracy. If you think the stupid idiots here are whining like little bitches about the dvd drive, you should listen to some of the pirates complain about DOWNLOADING the dvd....

My mothers old PII350Mhz Gateway had a DVD drive so many should have a DVD-rom drive. I don't have one yet but I went scrounging for an old burner to suit my needs, but I will be getting one soon to replace my 2nd cd-rom drive.

Dunno, it seems odd NOT to have a DVD drive in your PC these days, ESPECIALLY if you’re a gamer who’s built your own system (no offense intended :)).

Hell, the wholesale/internet price of a good DVD-ROM drive has been a whopping $10-15 more than a good CD-ROM drive for years. I've had a DVD-ROM drive in my system since 2x DVD-ROM drives (course, they weren't as inexpensive back then, but prices quickly fell as newer gen DVD drives came out). Anyway, I burn from disc to disc and copy CDs often enough that having a second drive is nice to have. Then, being able to watch/rip DVD-movies is a rather inexpensive bonus.

In all fairness, I can see how some folks wouldn’t use the second drive. Even so, I'm still hopeful that more games and programs start coming on DVD. As I said, this is progress, plain and simple. Not much about "forced upgrade" that I’m sure we're prolly all weary of. I'd call it convenience as well as progress... Office and Windows on a single disc, anyone?. Heh. I look forward to reading that Dell is dropping 650MB CD-ROM drives from their systems! : P

Why on earth would you even say that? My DvD drive was the first component that I purchased when I built my new PC. I like watching DvDs on my PC, those of you with ATI cards (maybe just All-in-Wonders) will agree that the pc is one of the most perfect places to watch movies. My monitor will provide higher resolution than the Sony big screen in my living room.

Unless it's a high resolution tv, regular tvs max out at 640x480 resolution, don't they? DVD movies are set to 720x480, I thought. My monitor is set to 10x7, and I watch movies on my monitor all the time.

I've built pcs for years and always throw in a dvd drive. You never know when you might need one. And as stated numerous time below, it's not like you're breaking the bank to buy one.


Edit: BTW, to all the naysayers here, I bet if it was announced tomorrow that Doom3 would be dvd only, you'd be running out to buy a dvd drive, clicking your heels all the way.

I think it is about time for software, mainly games, to come over on DVDs.

for what it's worth, MSDN subscriptions have been available on DVD for a while, and it's a real spacesaver.

For instance my mother in law who has no clue about computers and hates computer games has a DVD drive in her computer. My dad nearly 60 never played a computer game in his life has a DVD drive.

But myself and two of my best friends in our upper 20's who play computer games religiously. Buy new games at least one or two games a month, build our own computers piece by piece don't have DVD drives. We have a DVD player hooked to our respective entertainment centers to watch movies. But since there is like no DVD games why would a gamer have a DVD drive?

Plus if I remember correctly all the really bad games on the original CD's were all the bad games that were really movies with no gameplay. It took a while for actual decent games to start coming out on CD.

I'll wait until something good comes out on DVD before I put one in my computer. Until then I'll just stick with my trusty CD-Rom drive.

I'm glad someone *finally* had the balls. All the other publishers haven't been willing to risk it - they've all been waiting for one of the big boys like EA to try, and even then they were expecting a dual format test (CD/DVD). Hopefully this'll finally kick the PC games industry in the ass, the fact that we don't usually get DVD games is starting to be a problem that will only get worse. Just look at the number of 3 CD games appearing, how much of a pain in the ass is it to install them? A big one. What I don't get is this: anyone with a PC remotely capable of playing UT 2003 is BOUND to have a DVD drive, surely? The odds of someone having a 1 gig+ machine and no DVD must be stupidly slim. I'm pretty sure publishers are using stats from years back of the entire PC market rather than recent DVD drive penetration stats from gamers, which is just dumb.

Anyway, yes, let's hope this sells like hotcakes despite the "less common" format (come on, DVD drives are dirt cheap these days) and therefore starts a long overdue trend.

You can pick up a cheap-yet-a-really-good DVD-ROM anywhere these days. It doesn't have to be a DVD-Writable drive. As long as the drive can read DVD-ROM and at an affordable price(which shouldn't be too much of a problem for most you guys). I think you should. Even though the technology was introduced decades ago, in the near future PC games will probably get larger than or equal to MGS2 where developers will have to convert to DVD format.

I'm glad I got my DVD-ROM drive(capture DVD movies, rip PS2 Music files) although I didn't expect to see the MGS2 PC to be on the DVD format.

As someone else said, most people who build their own PC's don't have DVD drives. The reason being that the majority of DVD releases are movies, and most people are used to watching movies on their TV's.

Heck my roomate has a p933 dell w/ pre-installed RagePro 16MB video, onboard sound, and *gasp* a DVD-Drive!

If he has a dvd drive there is really no excuse why *you* the target audience for this game do not !
